Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a first person narrative style text, depicting the real life experiences of a woman’s life and times in the cosmopolitan city of Johannesburg. Having lived a relatively sheltered life, with her upbringing in the city of Port Elizabeth, this writer ardently tackles a new world. Her words honest, emotive, eloquent and yet precise and relative to the very essence of growing up in an era of transformative change and the impact our segregated history has on the outlook and promise of a future. She strums direct on the strings which sound the melody of our souls and relative to the very essence of life; to love, to lose, to yearn for so much more; but most importantly to hope against hope itself that in spite of ourselves and our fondest of intentions we learn the life lessons that have allowed our very existence to be ok. Abigail has selected moments in her life and interlaced this with the right amount of fiction to stir a readers thoughts and dreams, honest to the extent where we might be honest with ourselves knowing that the very experiences which we shelter within our minds have not been replicated but more importantly felt by another human being, another soul so close to home. The stories are told straight from the core of her being, her soul. This mix of the ripeness of her age and the folly of her youth leave neither little unsaid nor more to be stirred in the readers’ soul.

Book excerpt: Set in a Drakensberg boarding school in the early 1980s, this eerily realistic novel examines San mythology through an 11-year-old boy’s unusual bond with nature and the supernatural. Haunted by dreams of creatures conjured by his culture’s mythology and encouraged by the enthusiastic teachings of an overly friendly school teacher, Andrew makes the Hill his retreat. Seeking solace, his trips to the Hill turn into a real-life nightmare as his mentor uses the area’s isolation and his student’s trust as an opportunity for abuse. A fusion of boyhood innocence, ancient lore, and the harsh reality of adult life, love, and betrayal, this haunting tale of obsession and trauma is at times both heartwarming and achingly sad.

Book In Winter s Eye

Download or read book In Winter s Eye written by Wallace Collins and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-03-07 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My endeavor here is to validate and document In Winters Eye what causes me to reflect, and try to recapture, in retrospect, my experiences--events propelled then by my pervasive apprehension of frost. This symbolic cold weather chills me to the bone In Winters Eye, which has now resurfaced in this brooding, but stark and detail reality. Yet, though the metaphorical winter weather doesnt bother me that much anymore, but when I accidentally get onto that slippery patch of racial black ice that camouflages the asphalt Thrue-way as passable, then, it would hit on my wheels and send me careening into a chaotic irrational verbal spin. My meeting with that icy patch on lifes roadway to somewhere, or nowhere for that matter, freewheels my sense of direction as it throws me off my intended course of normal human progress; after which I would struggle to maintain control of myself and the vehicle of my life I am driving down the road, if not to somewhere in the future, but to obliterate the past, where my wheels would swerve and skid helter skelter, luckily, into the shoulder of the Thrue-way for my ultimate survival. It became a necessity for me then, after meeting head-on the pronounced differences intoned by the assonant and dissonant sounds that racial preference plays out with acrimony, compared with the personal autonomy of my parent culture and the restrictions based on race in anothers. My endeavor to be accepted by my peers saw me struggle to adapt and to assimilate the new culture I enter, of which I wrote about In Winters Eye," or simply to remain, not just as an entity, but preferably that of a functional individual, as in the following. It is in such an ethnic arena that one jazz-dance to the subtle tempo from the racial nuances afoot, as one tries to keep time to that unique racial beat, sufficient to make one assess ones common experiences with others, keeping in mind, meanwhile, how it was in the countries, I lived and traveled over the years. In the fall of 1967, it was not a dream I had awakened from, and found myself living a life, akin to that of a spectator perched on a ledge in the balcony, gawking at the happenings taking place below in the arena. My consciousness held sway as I ogled at the vibrant milieu of racial politics happening then in my New York. I was not dreaming either when I found myself living in an apartment in Corona, Queens, as it was my natural evolvement within the trajectory of my migratory, path to the Big Apple. Neither was I having an-out-of-body experience that spirited me from Jamaica to London, then whisked me off to Toronto on a tidal wave, and finally being carried aloft by a big silver bird that landed me in the New York, slab-dab in the middle of the Civil Rights struggle. It was a vast struggle then, and remains so today, though on a higher level as still a living, breathing, a phenomenon that, in the 1960's, had elicited a mad rush of water to ooze from fire hoses manned by assiduous, if not sadistic, law and order protagonists that swept their fellow American brethren off their feet, and tossed them several yards from the offending fray.

Book Transatlantic Policy Quarterly TPQ Winter 2023 24 Vol 22 No 4

Download or read book Transatlantic Policy Quarterly TPQ Winter 2023 24 Vol 22 No 4 written by Haroldo Ramanzini Junior and published by TRANSATLANTIC POLICY QUARTERLY. This book was released on 2024-03-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, or the BRICS nations, are living proof of how power and influence are constantly changing in the world's politics and economy. Redefining their positions within the global system and laying the groundwork for a multilateral world order that aims to challenge the traditional dominance of Western economies and institutions, the BRICS countries have been active since the acronym was coined in the early 21st century and expanded to include South Africa in 2010. Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Argentina, Bolivia, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Cuba, Gabon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Comoros, and Kazakhstan are among the more than 40 nations that have shown interest in becoming BRICS members. Now, after a huge expansion, the BRICS has grown into a more formidable club of nations with the recent addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Also, Saudi Arabia is still working on becoming a full member, even though Javier Milei, Argentina's newly elected president, turned down the invitation. Given that BRICS now includes over 40 percent of the world's population and 25 percent of the world's economy, it's easy to see why the organization is so essential to be better understood. Given this, the purpose of this TPQ special issue is to delve into the background, reality, and future prospects of the BRICS as well as the various reasons and motivations behind the accession of its member states.
