Book excerpt: The book of verse that gave poet Edward Steinhardt a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry nomination. Richard Wilbur said of Dandelion Dreams that "Edward Steinhardt's poems move in a characteristic exploratory way, through scenes large or small, through relationships. They are highly readable--talkative, sympathetic, humane--and it is a pleasure to follow their course." Mr. Wilbur also said the poems are "precisely evocative."Robert Creeley said, "These poems are fact of an enduring human attention to what values and feelings are still possible in our world. They are pledge and record, testament and persuasive story, of a real life in a real time and place. Edward Steinhardt has learned his art with great determination and humility. His generous authority is clear in every page."

Book FLAGHOPPING And Other Poems

Download or read book FLAGHOPPING And Other Poems written by Michael Pattwell and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The late Bryan McMahon in his short story, "The Crossing", said, through one of his characters, that writing is "a compulsive venting of the fermenting cask of my passion". I have always admired McMahon anyway but I have never found anything that so expertly defines 'writing'. Many of my poems in this book were written at times in my life over the last twenty years when my head was literally exploding with feelings of one kind or another, from intense love through to dejection and near despair. If the person who casually takes up this book takes the time to read the poems within I think this will become very obvious. Starting with my Inis Meáin poems right through to poems about family and relationships at the end of the book I am only too well aware that I have probably exposed more of myself than many would care to do. I think I have a reputation for direct, no nonsense, plain talking and I believe I have done that in this, my first, collection. One thing that I hope does come through is my huge love and admiration for my late wife, Mairéad, who passed away since these poems were first published, for my parents, now sadly deceased also and for all of my children and grandchildren."

Book excerpt: The summer of '28 was a vintage season for a growing boy. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma's belly-busting dinner. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding—remembered forever by the incomparable Ray Bradbury. The only god living in Green Town, Illinois, that Douglas Spaulding knew of. The facts about John Huff, aged twelve, are simple and soon stated. • He could pathfind more trails than any Choctaw or Cherokee since time began. • Could leap from the sky like a chimpanzee from a vine. • Could live underwater two minutes and slide fifty yards downstream. • Could hit baseballs into apple trees, knocking down harvests. • Could jump six-foot orchard walls. • Ran laughing. • Sat easy. • Was not a bully. • Was kind. • Knew the words to all the cowboy songs and would teach you if you asked. • Knew the names of all the wild flowers and when the moon would rise or set and when the tides came in or out. He was, in fact, the only god living in the whole of Green Town, Illinois, during the twentieth century that Douglas Spaulding knew of. “[Ray] Bradbury is an authentic original.”—Time
