Book Winter a Season of Memories

Download or read book Winter a Season of Memories written by Sunny Books and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you sometimes find it difficult to engage your loved one with dementia? To help them stay calm in the midst of an emotional reaction? To find activities you can share with them that encourage peaceful interaction? This book can help. Winter (A Season of Memories) is the second in a series of four books highlighting childhood memories from each of the four seasons. Paging through this book is an activity that will capture your loved one's attention, engage their mind, and encourage them to relax. People with dementia often have difficulty with short-term memory, but many of their long-term memories are intact. As your loved one is reminded of the activities of childhood, they may be inspired to talk about their own childhood or the joy they experienced raising their own children. The childhood memories included in this book are simple ones that will be familiar to all seniors, such as building a snowman, cutting out paper snowflakes, making snow angels, and experiencing the joy of Christmas. Each "memory" is a short, uplifting story of a few sentences in large-print text illustrated by a full-page, full-color photo. At Sunny Street Books, we design books specifically for seniors with dementia. Families, caregivers, and memory care staff can share our books with the people they care for. They also provide an excellent activity for seniors with Parkinson's disease or recovering from a stroke. Seniors with eyesight or strength challenges who find it difficult to hold a heavy book or read long paragraphs of text will also enjoy our books. Book Memories of Winter Ball

Download or read book Memories of Winter Ball written by Lou Hernández and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-04 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an oral history of the Latin American baseball leagues of the mid-20th century. Interviews with dozens of former major league players, who participated in the winter leagues of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, provide a fascinating view of life in all of these countries during the most nostalgic era of baseball. For the majority of the players, it was the first time in their lives living in a foreign country; some of the more fortunate made trips to the Caribbean Series. The players' recollections range from their experiences on and off the field, to where they lived, what they ate, the ballparks, other players and irrepressible fans. The stories are often juxtaposed against the backdrop of Latin American political history, adding to the unique international flavor.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! AS HEARD ON NPR MORNING EDITION AND ON BEING WITH KRISTA TIPPETT “Katherine May opens up exactly what I and so many need to hear but haven't known how to name.” —Krista Tippett, On Being “Every bit as beautiful and healing as the season itself. . . . This is truly a beautiful book.” —Elizabeth Gilbert "Proves that there is grace in letting go, stepping back and giving yourself time to repair in the dark...May is a clear-eyed observer and her language is steady, honest and accurate—capturing the sense, the beauty and the latent power of our resting landscapes." —Wall Street Journal An intimate, revelatory book exploring the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a break up, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May's story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat, joy in the hushed beauty of winter, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical, not linear. A secular mystic, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season.
