Book Bushville Wins

Download or read book Bushville Wins written by John Klima and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rip-roaring story of baseball's most unlikely champions, featuring interviews with Henry Aaron, Bob Uecker and other members of the Milwaukee Braves, Bushville Wins! takes you to a time and place baseball and the Heartland will never forget. "Bushville hits the sweet spot of my childhood, the year my family moved to Wisconsin and the Braves won the World Series against the Yankees, a team my Brooklyn-raised dad taught us to hate. Thanks to John Klima for bringing it all back to life with such vivid detail and energetic writing." -- David Maraniss, New York Times bestselling author of Clemente and When Pride Still Mattered In the early 1950s, the New York Yankees were the biggest bullies on the block. They were invincible: they led the New York City baseball dynasty, which for eight consecutive years held an iron grip on the World Series championship. Then the Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953, becoming surprise revolutionaries. Led by visionary owner Lou Perini, the Braves formed a powerful relationship with the Miller Brewing Company and foreshadowed the Dodgers and Giants moving west, sparking continental expansion and the ballpark boom. But the rest of the country wasn't sold. Why would a major league team move to a minor league town? In big cities like New York, Milwaukee was thought to be a podunk train station stop-off where the fans were always drunk and wouldn't know a baseball from a beer. They called Milwaukee Bushville. The Braves were no bushers! Eddie Mathews was a handsome home run hitter with a rugged edge. Warren Spahn was the craftiest pitcher in the business. Lew Burdette was a sharky spitball artist. Taken together, the Braves reveled in the High Life and made Milwaukee famous, while Wisconsin fans showed the rest of the country how to crack a cold one and throw a tailgate party. And in 1954, a solemn and skinny slugger came from Mobile to Milwaukee. Henry Aaron began his march to history. With a cast of screwballs, sluggers and beer swiggers, the Braves proved the guys at the corner bar could do the impossible - topple Casey Stengel's New York baseball dynasty in a World Series for the ages.

Download or read book Braves Win Braves Win Braves Win The 1995 World Champion Atlanta Braves written by Len Levin and published by Sabr Baseball Library. This book was released on 2020-04-27 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring an introduction by John Schuerholz, bios of all 40 players, and writeups of 10 key games from 1995.It has been 25 years since that magical night in Atlanta, October 28, 1995, when the Braves became the first team in any sport to give Atlanta a world championship. This book presents biographies of each of the 40 players who took the field in a Braves uniform in 1995. Many had long and successful big-league careers, and for others their time in The Show was brief. But they all contributed to that championship season, and they all have interesting stories. Nine players made their major-league debuts with the 1995 Braves, and for three team members, that season marked the end of their big-league careers. Four members-Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz-along with manager Bobby Cox and general manager John Schuerholz have been enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. There are exciting stories of the 10 most notable games of the 1995 season, and behind-the-scenes stories of many of the Braves' front office personnel, who worked tirelessly, both at the major-league and the minor-league levels, to mold a championship organization. Not all are familiar names, but each played an integral part in making the Atlanta Braves the team they are today. What this 1995 team accomplished was the pinnacle of a nearly 30-year run of excellence for the Braves, and that tradition continues. I am very pleased that SABR provided the opportunity for a dedicated group of 56 members to contribute as researchers, authors, and/or editors.-adapted from the Introduction, Tom HuffordPLAYERSSteve Avery, Tom HuffordSteve Bedrosian, Wynn MontgomeryRafael Belliard, Joe CoxJeff Blauser, Creg StephensonPedro Borbon Jr., Justin KruegerTerry Clark, Tony OliverBrad Clontz, Jesse AsburyMike Devereaux, Greg KingEd Giovanola, Clayton TrutorTom Glavine, Joseph WanchoMarquis Grissom, Alan MorrisChipper Jones, Jacob PomrenkeDavid Justice, Sean TetersMike Kelly, Joel RippelRyan Klesko, Joel RippelBrian Kowitz, Jack ZerbyMark Lemke, Paul HofmannJavy Lopez, Kyle EatonGreg Maddux, Stew ThornleyDarrell May, Darin WatsonFred McGriff, Peter M. Download or read book Milwaukee Braves written by William Povletich and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During their thirteen years in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Braves never endured a losing season, won two National League pennants, and in 1957 brought Milwaukee its only World Series championship. With a lineup featuring future Hall of Famers Henry Aaron, Warren Spahn, Eddie Matthews, Red Schoendienst, and Phil Niekro, the team immediately brought Milwaukee "Big League" credentials, won the hearts of fans, and shattered attendance records. The Braves' success in Milwaukee prompted baseball to redefine itself as a big business—resulting in franchises relocating west, multi-league expansion, and teams leveraging cities for civically funded stadiums. But the Braves' instant success and accolades made their rapid fall from grace after winning the 1957 world championship all the more stunning, as declining attendance led the team to Atlanta in one of the ugliest divorces between a city and baseball franchise in sports history. Featuring more than 100 captivating photos, many published here for the first time, Milwaukee Braves preserves the Braves' legacy for the team's many fans and introduces new generations to a fascinating chapter in sports history.

Book When the Braves Ruled the Diamond

Download or read book When the Braves Ruled the Diamond written by Dan Schlossberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1991 through 2005, the Atlanta Braves did something no pro sports team can match, finishing in first place for fourteen consecutive seasons. During that stretch, the Braves paired powerful pitching with potent hitting that produced under pressure. Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox won with veteran teams, young teams, slugging teams, and several times with teams that emphasized speed and defense. His teams captured on hundred wins in six different seasons. In When the Braves Ruled the Diamond, now newly updated to include a discussion of the team's latest Hall of Fame inductees, former AP sportswriter Dan Schlossberg covers the record-breaking era that transformed Atlanta from the Bad-News Braves to America's Team. With separate chapters on Cox, fabled pitching coach Leo Mazzone, and Hall of Fame pitchers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz, this book also highlights the contributions of Andres Galarraga, Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones, Brian Jordan, Javy Lopez, Terry Pendleton, and many more Braves stars. It features year-by-year summaries, Opening Day lineups, and even oddball anecdotes that explain why the fourteen-year streak may never be duplicated. Book Inside Pitch

Book excerpt: One of the greatest pitchers of his generation, Tom Glavine delivered the defining moment of the Atlanta Braves' 1990s dynasty. Glavine took the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium mound for Game 6 of the 1995 World Series and allowed just one hit as the Braves won 1-0 to clinch Atlanta's first, and only, World Series title. Glavine captured the World Series MVP trophy and the hearts of Braves fans forever. In Inside Pitch, the left-hander tells the story that led up to this moment of glory and countless others in a Hall of Fame career that spanned 22 seasons. Glavine provides an in-depth look at the Braves' glory years, including his friends and fellow Cy Young Award winners Greg Maddux and John Smoltz and manager Bobby Cox. Glavine also shares memories of teammates from Deion Sanders to Chipper Jones and of playing for owner Ted Turner. He also tells his own story from growing up in a working-class family, pushing himself to succeed and his decision to turn down a chance to play pro hockey, opting for baseball instead. He describes his 300th win, his election to baseball's Hall of Fame, and his later seasons with the New York Mets before returning to close out his career with the Braves. Fans of the Braves, and of baseball, will love Glavine's book. It is filled with all the drama and inspiration that make the game America's passion.

Book Baseball Players Best Seasons

Download or read book Baseball Players Best Seasons written by Michael S. Jones and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2001 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other sport, baseball is about statistics-the numbers do not lie. The players who shine in the boxscore are the ones most likely remembered, and a single spectacular season can cement a player's place in history. This book acknowledges not only the baseball fan's passion for player-to-player comparisons but also the tug of team loyalty on the game's enthusiasts. Providing the statistical tools to better gauge the performance of players between teams and through time, the work allows Cubs fans, for instance, to ask-and answer-whether the best deadball performances by Brown, Reulbach, and Vaughn should be weighed more lightly than those by pitchers like Alexander, Warneke, and Jenkins, who shined in later, more hitter-friendly eras. Team-by-team for both the National and American leagues, this reference ranks the best season performances by position in baseball history. A dual ranking system considers both the volume and the rate of success achieved by a player in a particular season, with several sabremetric devices forming the basis of the rankings. All-Star line-ups are compiled for each team, as well as a brief history of each team and its players.

Book Thar s Joy in Braveland

Download or read book Thar s Joy in Braveland written by Saul Wisnia and published by SABR, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You talk about destiny, well, you can't rule that out. We were hard-nosed and that showed up in 1957." -- Braves catcher Del Crandall to editor Gregory H. Wolf Few teams in baseball history have captured the hearts of their fans like the Milwaukee Braves of the 19505. During the Braves' 13-year tenure in Milwaukee (1953-1965), they had a winning record every season, won two consecutive NL pennants (1957 and 1958), lost two more in the final week of the season (1956 and 1959), and set big-league attendance records along the way. This book celebrates the Milwaukee Braves' historic 1957 World Series championship season. Led by the bats of National League Most Valuable Player Henry Aaron and slugging third baseman Eddie Mathews and the "Big Three" pitching trio (Cy Young Award winner Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette, and Bob Buhl) the Braves won 95 games. The team enjoyed standout seasons by shortstop Johnny Logan, outfielder Wes Covington, and catcher Del Crandall And GM John Quinn pulled off the biggest trade of the summer, acquiring All-Star second baseman Red Schoendienst from the New York Giants. The Braves cemented their place in history by defeating the New York Yankees in the World Series. In one of the greatest performances in the history of the fall classic, crafty Lew Burdette tossed his second consecutive shutout (and third complete game) to defeat the Bronx Bombers in Game Seven, in Yankee Stadium. A collaborative effort of 32 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), Thar's Joy in Braveland! The 1957 Milwaukee Braves portrays that memorable team with life stories of all of the roster players, the manager and coaching staff, the owner, the general manager, and sportswriters and radio announcers. Summaries of the regular season and World Series re-create the magic of that unforgettable season.
