Book The Biggest Bluff

  • ISBN : 0525522646
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book The Biggest Bluff written by Maria Konnikova and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller • A New York Times Notable Book “The tale of how Konnikova followed a story about poker players and wound up becoming a story herself will have you riveted, first as you learn about her big winnings, and then as she conveys the lessons she learned both about human nature and herself.” —The Washington Post It's true that Maria Konnikova had never actually played poker before and didn't even know the rules when she approached Erik Seidel, Poker Hall of Fame inductee and winner of tens of millions of dollars in earnings, and convinced him to be her mentor. But she knew her man: a famously thoughtful and broad-minded player, he was intrigued by her pitch that she wasn't interested in making money so much as learning about life. She had faced a stretch of personal bad luck, and her reflections on the role of chance had led her to a giant of game theory, who pointed her to poker as the ultimate master class in learning to distinguish between what can be controlled and what can't. And she certainly brought something to the table, including a Ph.D. in psychology and an acclaimed and growing body of work on human behavior and how to hack it. So Seidel was in, and soon she was down the rabbit hole with him, into the wild, fiercely competitive, overwhelmingly masculine world of high-stakes Texas Hold'em, their initial end point the following year's World Series of Poker. But then something extraordinary happened. Under Seidel's guidance, Konnikova did have many epiphanies about life that derived from her new pursuit, including how to better read, not just her opponents but far more importantly herself; how to identify what tilted her into an emotional state that got in the way of good decisions; and how to get to a place where she could accept luck for what it was, and what it wasn't. But she also began to win. And win. In a little over a year, she began making earnest money from tournaments, ultimately totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. She won a major title, got a sponsor, and got used to being on television, and to headlines like "How one writer's book deal turned her into a professional poker player." She even learned to like Las Vegas. But in the end, Maria Konnikova is a writer and student of human behavior, and ultimately the point was to render her incredible journey into a container for its invaluable lessons. The biggest bluff of all, she learned, is that skill is enough. Bad cards will come our way, but keeping our focus on how we play them and not on the outcome will keep us moving through many a dark patch, until the luck once again breaks our way.

Book Success and Luck

Download or read book Success and Luck written by Robert H. Frank and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author and economics columnist Robert Frank, a compelling book that explains why the rich underestimate the importance of luck in their success, why that hurts everyone, and what we can do about it How important is luck in economic success? No question more reliably divides conservatives from liberals. As conservatives correctly observe, people who amass great fortunes are almost always talented and hardworking. But liberals are also correct to note that countless others have those same qualities yet never earn much. In recent years, social scientists have discovered that chance plays a much larger role in important life outcomes than most people imagine. In Success and Luck, bestselling author and New York Times economics columnist Robert Frank explores the surprising implications of those findings to show why the rich underestimate the importance of luck in success—and why that hurts everyone, even the wealthy. Frank describes how, in a world increasingly dominated by winner-take-all markets, chance opportunities and trivial initial advantages often translate into much larger ones—and enormous income differences—over time; how false beliefs about luck persist, despite compelling evidence against them; and how myths about personal success and luck shape individual and political choices in harmful ways. But, Frank argues, we could decrease the inequality driven by sheer luck by adopting simple, unintrusive policies that would free up trillions of dollars each year—more than enough to fix our crumbling infrastructure, expand healthcare coverage, fight global warming, and reduce poverty, all without requiring painful sacrifices from anyone. If this sounds implausible, you'll be surprised to discover that the solution requires only a few, noncontroversial steps. Compellingly readable, Success and Luck shows how a more accurate understanding of the role of chance in life could lead to better, richer, and fairer economies and societies.

Book Lucky Charms

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Reed Middleton
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2020-04-21
  • ISBN : 3751918094
  • Pages : 70 pages

Download or read book Lucky Charms written by John Reed Middleton and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LUCKY CHARMS is a play for students in Years 6, 7 or 8 (Level 3). It is designed for a normal-sized English class and for students with varying interests in acting. Since there are 43 speaking roles and as many as ten dancers, students who enjoy acting can perform in several scenes and play to their heart's content, whereas students who aren't particularly keen on acting only have one role to master in one single scene. Every scene deals with good or bad luck and sometimes specifically with lucky charms. And with the help of the two hosts, the professor and MC Tony, the audience is given the chance to contemplate the concept of luck. The play consists of dialogues between the two hosts and scenes with as many as eight to 13 performers. The themes are partly geared to the thoughts and dreams of students today - winning or discovering a lot of money, having the best cell phone, feeling that something good is going to happen or fearing that misfortune is on its way - and the scenes offer young actresses and actors the opportunity to experience a wide range of characters while performing. The plots are not always believable, but they are understandable, the language is idiomatic and easily accessible for English learners. LUCKY CHARMS works well when performed for smaller audiences: parents and other classes. But it can also be highly entertaining for a large audience. Performing time: about one hour. Of course, it is also possible to select individual scenes and perform them as simple skits outside the context of LUCKY CHARMS. In that case it is still recommendable to create a suitable setting for presenting the skits to an audience. The true joy of performing a foreign-language play is to feel it click, to realize that the people watching the performance don't only get the picture, they are also delighted to see a story come to life when presented in English by non-native performers. By purchasing the play, you automatically obtain the stage rights.

Book The Myth of Luck

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven D. Hales
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2020-07-23
  • ISBN : 1350149306
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book The Myth of Luck written by Steven D. Hales and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has thrown everything we have at implacable luck-novel theologies, entire philosophical movements, fresh branches of mathematics-and yet we seem to have gained only the smallest edge on the power of fortune. The Myth of Luck tells us why we have been fighting an unconquerable foe. Taking us on a guided tour of one of our oldest concepts, we begin in ancient Greece and Rome, considering how Plato, Plutarch, and the Stoics understood luck, before entering the theoretical world of probability and exploring how luck relates to theology, sports, ethics, gambling, knowledge, and present-day psychology. As we travel across traditions, times and cultures, we come to realize that it's not that as soon as we solve one philosophical problem with luck that two more appear, like heads on a hydra, but rather that the monster is altogether mythological. We cannot master luck because there is nothing to defeat: luck is no more than a persistent and troubling illusion. By introducing us to compelling arguments and convincing reasons that explain why there is no such thing as luck, we finally see why in a very real sense we make our own luck, that luck is our own doing. The Myth of Luck helps us to regain our own agency in the world - telling the entertaining story of the philosophy and history of luck along the way.

Book Winning Isn t Everything

Download or read book Winning Isn t Everything written by Dave Bowler and published by Orion. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of world cup winning football manager Sir Alf Ramsey England has never had a more successful national coach than Sir Alf Ramsey. A cultured full-back with Tottenham's push and run stylists, he turned to management once his international career had been cut short by Puskas' rampant Hungarians. At Ipswich Town he piloted a collection of comparative journeymen from the depths of the Third Division South to the heights of the League Championship, acquiring the job of England manager along the way. Fêted for winning the 1966 World Cup, castigated for the way he won it with his 'wingless wonders', then reviled for going out of the 1974 competition, Ramsey's achievements are lost in the legends of Russian linesmen, Bogotá and a Polish clown. Yet he was a commanding general, a footballing intellect beyond compare and a man who deserves more than caricature. Thoughtful and incisive, Dave Bowler's biography features extensive interviews with Geoff Hurst, Walter Winterbottom, Mick Channon, Tom Finney, Ray Wilson and Jimmy Armfield, among others, and reassesses Ramsey's contribution to the English game.
