Book excerpt: Alekhine's Controversial Masterpiece Finally in English! For decades, Alexander Alekhine's account of New York 1927 was at the top of the list of works that should have been rendered into English but unaccountably were not. This is unlike any other tournament book ever written. Not only do you have one of the greatest annotators of all time rendering some brilliant analysis, but he melds it with an exceptional agenda, an anti-Capablanca agenda. And since he wrote it after defeating Capablanca in their marathon match, he sounds like a sore loser who became a sore winner. So, this is just a mean-spirited book, right? Nothing of the sort. Alekhine goes beyond elaborate move analysis and offers deep positional insights and psychological observations. Nikolai Grigoriev, in his foreword to the 1930 Russian edition of this book, pointed out how Alekhine broke new ground by underlining the critical moments of each game. Why Alekhine's work was published in German, in Berlin in 1928, and not in English, is unclear. But now, after more than 80 years, it's finally available to the largest audience of chessplayers. It's about time.

Book The Big Book of World Chess Championships

Download or read book The Big Book of World Chess Championships written by Andre Schulz and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilhelm Steinitz, the winner of the first official World Chess Championship in 1886, would have rubbed his eyes in disbelieve if he could have seen how popular chess is today. With millions of players all around the world, live internet transmissions of major and minor competitions, and educational programs in thousands of schools, chess has truly become a global passion. And what would Steinitz, who had financial problems his whole life and died in poverty, have thought of the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, who became a multi-millionaire in his early twenties just by playing great chess? The history of the World Chess Championship reflects these enormous changes, and Andre Schulz tells the stories of the title fights in fascinating detail: the historical and social backgrounds, the prize money and the rules, the seconds and other helpers, and the psychological wars on and off the board. Relive the magic of Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Tal, Karpov, Kasparov, Bobby Fischer and the others! Andre Schulz has selected one defining game from each championship, and he explains the moves of the Champions in a way that is easily accessible for amateur players. This is a book that no true chess lover wants to miss.

That's what grandmaster Miguel Najdorf produced in his account of one of the greatest and most important chess events of all time, the 1953 Zürich Candidates Tournament, in which 15 of the world's top players battled for the right to challenge the world champion, Mikhail Botvinnik. After two months and 210 games, many of which rank among the best ever played, Russian grandmaster Vassily Smyslov finally came out at the head of a star-studded field that included Sam Reshevsky, Paul Keres, David Bronstein, Tigran Petrosian, Efim Geller, Alexander Kotov, Mark Taimanov, Yuri Averbakh, Isaac Boleslavsky, Laszló Szabó, Svetozar Gligoric, Max Euwe, Gideon Ståhlberg, and Najdorf himself. It includes all 210 games with Najdorf's full and extensive notes, plus all the original introductory material, biographical sketches of the players, round-by-round accounts of the action, closing summary, and a survey of the tournament's impact on opening theory. Book The Blue Book of Charts to Winning Chess

Download or read book The Blue Book of Charts to Winning Chess written by Arthur M. Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is THE book that first introduced a concept that has revolutionized tournament chess for most players. The concept is simply to create a database of chess games, sorted by openings, and then see which opening moves produce the best results. This book concludes that the overall winning percentage for White is 59%. It shows that the moves 1. d4 and 1.c4 win 60% of the time whereas 1.e4 scores only 59%. Regarding the second move, this book shows that against 1. e4, both 1. . . . c5 and 1. . . . e5 score equally well with 42% for Black, whereas the French Defense 1. . . . e6 and the Caro-Kann Defense, 1. . . . c6, do much worse, scoring only 38% for the Black side. This book is based on 56,972 games, all compiled and sorted, showing the winning and drawing position for each best move in the chess openings. For example, after the moves of the French Defense, 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5, it surprisingly shows that the move 3. e5, the Advance Variation, produces the highest winning percentage, as opposed to 3. Nc3 or 3. Nd2.

Book Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021

Download or read book Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021 written by Daniel Fernandez and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before you is the tournament book of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021. Theevent that has been won in sensational fashion by the young Dutch grandmasterJorden van Foreest. In a tiebreak in the third blitz game, he was just a bit faster ofhis compatriot Anish Giri. The barrage was necessary because both players verysurprisingly ended with the wonderful score of 81⁄2 out of 13 in joint first place. Withthis they had left behind, among others, World Champion Magnus Carlsen (71⁄2) andthe number two in the world, Fabiano Caruana (8). An unprecedented achievement, because the tournament in Wijk aan Zee is sometimes called the "Wimbledon of chess" of the elite tournaments. After the last round, in which Van Foreest in a formidable way had left the Swede Nils Grandelius chanceless, it was waitingfor the game between the Spaniard David Antón Guijarra and Anish Giri. Ourcompatriot was in a bad position, lost perhaps, but he managed to free himself fromthe tangled position and gain an important half point. It was decided beforehandthat a tiebreak would be held, consisting of at least two blitz games. Should theseresult in a 1-1 score, an Armageddon game would be played. This turned out to bea nervous and blood-curdling fight, with the pieces flying around. In the end theyounger OF the two, Jorden van Foreest, emerged victorious and thus the youngGroninger booked the greatest success of his still young career. Apart from thecommotion in the Dutch seaside resort of Wijk aan Zee, where the tournament washeld - under strict corona rules - the whole of the Netherlands rose to its feet whenthis great result became known. Hadn't we had to wait since 1985, when JanTimman won the Hoogovens chess tournament, for a Dutch chess player to standon the highest podium? And now it was even two players from this country whocould dispute together who would take the highest honor
