  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Picturing Performance written by Thomas F. Heck and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been a need to introduce performing-arts enthusiasts and students to the fascinating field of iconography, both as manifested in art history and in its more pragmatic or applied forms. Yet relatively little systematic effort has been made to collect and interpret centuries of such visual evidence in the light of the best available art-historical information, combined with corroborating textual documentation and insights from the histories of performance disciplines. Aspiring iconographers of the performing arts need to be aware that there are often several levels of interpretation which great works of visual art will sustain. This book explores these levels of interpretation: a surface or literal reading, a deeper reading of the work which seeks to enter the mind of the artist and asks how and why he put a given work together, and the deepest reading of the work relating it to the artistic traditions and culture in which the artist lived. In expounding on these levels of iconographic interpretations four discourses by scholars active in the study of visual records are given in relation to traditions, techniques, and trends: performance in general (Katritzky), music (Heck), theatre (Erenstein), and dance (Smith). Effort is made to keep abreast of modern technology influencing iconographic representations as on the Internet and virtual reality.Thomas F. Heck is Professor of Musicology and Head of the Music and Dance Library at the Ohio State University.

Book excerpt: Although first and foremost a versatile, multi-talented hunting dog, the German Shorthaired Pointer is an equally delightful companion dog beloved for his sweet temperament, superb trainability, and good looks. Those dark brown eyes and chestnut-colored easy-to-care-for coat makes this sporting dog a desirable choice for the family who has the time and inclination to indulge this super dog's boundless energy and drive. Author Nona Kilgore Bauer, a hunting dog aficionado, trainer, and breeder, charts the origins of this sensation multi-purpose hunter: "The practical German hunter-breeder aimed for the ideal one-man dog, one with a superb nose that could locate, point and hold until the guns were at the ready, then, with a gentle mouth, retriever the bird to hand. Such a dog should also possess great courage and the ability and willingness to stalk and apprehend larger game such as deer, hare, or fox." Considered an HRP breed by hunting specialists;hunt, point, retrieve;the GSP is arguably the most proficient hunting breed ever developed, and as such needs a job to do. The chapter on the breed's characteristics gives potential owners an accurate depiction of what the GSP requires in terms of training, socialization, and exercise, and the breed standard, presented in the following chapter, paints a complete portrait of what the ideal GSP should possess in terms of temperament, physical characteristics, abilities, and movement.New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrier-breed expert Bardi McLennan unveils the mystery of the Irish Terrier, whose "heedless, reckless pluck" has made him the indisputable "daredevil" of the dog world. Fiery, protective, friendly, and affectionate, the Irish Terrier possesses an intense personality that is only exceeded by his loyalty to his owner and family. In the history chapter that opens this Comprehensive Owner's Guide, McLennan retells the origins of the terriers of the Emerald Isle, how various terrier types evolved, and how the Irish Terrier;as a purebred dog;came to fame and favor among farmers, dog breeders, military personnel, and peasants, especially as a children's companion. In the chapter on the breed's characteristics, the author offers sound advice for all potential owners of the Irish Terrier. Recognizing the breed's bold and boisterous nature, the Irish Terrier "is not a breed for the timid, the weak-willed or those who merely wish to pamper a pet and be pampered in return." Today's Irish Terriers, though not as "reckless" as his forebears, "should not be thought of anything more than assertive. He is not aggressive toward people, but he is a dog who likes who he is and doesn't mind letting others know it."New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies.
