Book excerpt: A guide through the many aspects of Wenders's groundbreaking film, employing archival research to bring out new insights into its making and its meanings. Filmed in 1986/87 in still-divided Berlin, Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is both a utopian fairy tale and a fascinating time capsule of that late Cold War moment. Together with legendary French cinematographer Henri Alekan(who had worked on Jean Cocteau's La Belle et la Bête of 1946, among many other films) and Austrian author Peter Handke (with whom he had collaborated before), Wenders created a multilayered filmic poem of dazzling complexity: the skies over Berlin are populated with angels bearing witness to its inhabitants' everyday concerns. One falls in love with a beautiful young woman, a trapeze artist in a traveling circus, and decides to forfeit his immortality. Wenders's groundbreaking film has been hailed as a paean to love, a rumination on the continued presence in Berlin of the troubled German history, as well as an homage to the life-affirming power of the cinematic imagination.Christian Rogowski guides the reader through the film's many aspects, using archival research to bring out new insights into its making and its meanings. Christian Rogowski is G. Armour Craig Professor in Language andLiterature in the Department of German at Amherst College.

Download or read book Dragons on Bird Wings written by Vladislav Antipov and published by Kitchener, Ont. : Aviaeology. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow the 3rd Fighter Aviation Corps along its Combat Path during the Liberation of the Motherland through the experiences of one of its units - the 812th Fighter Aviation Regiment.Drawing on a comprehensive range of archives, memoirs, and photographs, the authors describe this unit's daily combat activities in detail from its formative Rzhev - Vyazma days on the doorstep of Moscow, into the pivotal Stalingrad battles, and on through the hard-won victories along the shores of the Sea of Azov - Kuban, Myskhako, Molochnaya - and beyond. In this volume, part one of the 812th regiment's combat history reaches its climax with the ejection of the Luftwaffe from its remaining bases near the besieged fortress city of Sevastopol, while the Red Army liberates the Crimea from the grip of the Wehrmacht. We leave the 812th - General Savitskiy's "Dragons on Birds Wings" - as it regroups and prepares for the great drive through Europe where it will end the war in Berlin itself...This is the one of the first primary source derived, and by some accounts foremost, English-language histories of an operational regiment-sized VVS (Soviet Air Force) unit during the Great Patriotic War. Forward by Von Hardesty.Expert translation from an original Russian manuscript by James Gebhardt in consultation with Dr. Ilya Grinberg.Useful appendices and comprehensively indexed.REVIEWS "Considerable amounts of care have gone into this volume, both in the research and writing by Antipov and Utkin and in the translation, editing, and production work by the team in Canada. While it should come as no surprise that a Soviet air regiment could have such an scintillating existence leading to a high quality unit history, it does seem rather remarkable that we've had to wait so long to see this kind of work from the Russian side of the Eastern Front become available in English." - Bill Stone"A rare and essential item in English... The authors have done monumental work in compiling statistical and technical information..." - Regina Pennington on Amazon.com"It shows the air war from the Russian perspective without all the death- defying patriotic lingo ('glorious', 'fascist', 'patriotic', etc.)." - Richard Ordway on Amazon.com
Download or read book Bts the Review written by 김영대 and published by Rhk. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest portion of this book is dedicated to the examination of sixteen albums that BTS has released. It was an unquestionable, obvious organization for me, albeit it may be demanding for the readers. To write this book, I replayed BTS' entire discography ad nauseam, though I am already familiar with the songs from previous repeated listens. I re-analyzed all the tracks in all of their singles, albums, solo albums, and activities in their entirety from scratch. I replayed same songs too many times to the point of blanking out occasionally. To elaborate the meaning and the appeal of their songs in musical terms, and to formulate a guide for those who listen to their music for the first time, I kept repeating the songs to develop a new framework. As a result, this book became compilation of critiques, reviews, and liner notes. It is my answer to how BTS came to be the sensation they are to-day. You will not find it in a few sentences or an article, but throughout the analyses of all the songs, lyrics, and the steps of the journey that BTS has taken. As you read this book, I wish you will put on your favorite speakers or headsets and enjoy BTS' music again as you recap their career from the beginning. You may as well compare and contrast your impression with a music critic's perspective. When you turn the final page, I hope you are satisfied with my answer on the essence and the secret of BTS' success.
Download or read book Wings of Iraq written by Tom Cooper and published by Middle East@War. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officially established on 22 April 1931, around a core of 5 pilots and 32 aircraft mechanics, the Royal Iraqi Air Force was the first military flying service in any Arab country. Wings of Iraq, Volume 2 tells the story of the Iraqi Air Force between 1970 and 1980. In doing so it examines the air force's involvement in the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War, and then the showdown with the Iranian-supported Kurdish insurgency in northern Iraq in 1974-1975. These two affairs taught the Iraqis that numbers alone did not make an air force. Correspondingly, during the second half of the 1970s, Baghdad embarked on a project based on full technology transfer from France, which was intended to result in preparing the IrAF for the twenty-first century. This process hardly began when the new ruler in Baghdad, Saddam Hussein at-Tikriti, led his country into an invasion of neighboring Iran, embroiling it in a ruinous, eight-year-long war. This volume details the events leading up to the beginning of that war and its opening moves in the air. Although virtually 'born in battle', collecting precious combat experience and playing an important role in so many internal and external conflicts, the Iraqi Air Force remains one of the least known and most misinterpreted military services in the Middle East. Richly illustrated, Wings of Iraq, Volume 2, provides a uniquely compact yet comprehensive guide to its operational history, its crucial officers and aircraft, and its major operations between 1970 and 1980.

Download or read book American Aircraft Development of the Second World War written by William Norton and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2019-07-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a little-known aspect of America's aircraft development of World War II in emphasizing unique and non-production aircraft or modifications for the purpose of research and experimentation in support of aircraft development, advancing technology, or meeting narrow combat needs. It describes some important areas of American aviation weapons maturation under the pressure of war with emphasis on advanced technology and experimental aircraft configurations. The great value of the work is illumination of little known or minimally documented projects that significantly advanced the science of aeronautics, propulsion, aircraft systems, and ordnance, but did not go into production. Each chapter introduces another topic by examining the state-of-the-art at the beginning of the war, advantages pursued, and results achieved during the conflict. This last is the vehicle to examine the secret modifications or experiments that are little known. Consequently, this is an important single-source for a fascinating and diverse collection of wartime efforts never before brought together under a single cover. The "war stories" are those of military staffs, engineering teams, and test pilots struggling against short schedules and tight resource constraints to push the bounds of technology. These epic and sometimes life-threatening endeavors were as vital as actual combat operations.
