BF or Daddy as he was known, started his career at Dartmouth and then spent his early seagoing years in Hong Kong, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. His wartime experiences as a Fleet Air pilot aboard HMS Glorious included the historic air strike at Taranto and the search for the Graf Spee. In May 1940 he was loaned to Coastal Command and attacked German Panzer tanks in a biplane, defended Allied troops over Dunkirk and was one of only a few naval officers to fight in the Battle of Britain. After a period as a test pilot at Boscombe Down he became one of only four Wing Leaders in the Royal Navy. His successful leadership lead to many more successes, not least the crippling of Tirpitz as part of a diversionary plan in the lead up to D-Day.He was a superb pilot, loved by all the air and ground crew under his command. His reputation as a fearless and dynamic leader remains a legend today. The book contains detailed and graphic accounts of aerial sorties and strikes throughout the dark days over Nazi Europe. Tragically he was killed in action in July 1944, one week prior to promotion and a job ashore. The book includes many of his letters and extracts from his diary.

On the one hand, he contrasted early man's laborious and grueling manner of travel with the seemingly effortless flight of birds. On the other hand, the elder Wright brother placed equal emphasis on the mobility inherent in the flight of birds and, again, the implied contrast with the lack of geographical freedom which limited humans. How easily the winged creatures could cross vast expanses of land or water; how difficult for man to do the same. But by 1908, when Wilbur Wright delivered this speech, both he and his brother had experienced in their flying machine the freedom and mobility which had so fired the imaginations of our ancestors. Wilbur Wright also told the members of the Aero-Club de France that the idea of flight was "an idea that has always impassioned mankind." He did not need to give examples or evidence of the accuracy of this observation, for the proof was there in the members of his audience. They shared this passion for flight. Had he felt compelled to justify his assertion, Wilbur Wright could have pointed to the winged gods and deities of ancient Egypt, Assyria. Greece and Rome. Or he could have mentioned Western religious art with its winged angels and cherubs. Since he was a widely-read man. particularly in the literature relating to aviation. Wilbur Wright might even have produced examples of the desire to fly in Oriental art and religions. But the intense and taciturn Mr. Wright did none of these things. He assumed, instead, that his audience shared this ancient dream of flight.

The book, itself, is a work of historical fiction but stays close to the factual history of the WWII era with special reference to the war in Europe and the part played by the Eighth U.S. Air Force and the Royal Air Force of Great Britain.

The reader can visualize the black puffs of smoke from the AA guns as well the numerous search lights piercing the black sky to lock onto the B-29's. The war ended after his 13th mission. Included in the book is a picture of Hiroshima after the "A bomb" had been dropped. While delivering supplies to our prisoners of war held by the Japanese, he flew over Hiroshima. The sight was appalling.

Book excerpt: With Ethiopia in disarray following a period of severe internal unrest and the spread of insurgencies in Eritrea and Tigray, Ethiopia and its armed forces should have offered little opposition to well-equipped Somali armed forces which were unleashed to capture Ogaden, in July 1977. However, excellently trained pilots of the Ethiopian Air Force took full advantage of their US-made equipment, primarily their few brand-new Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighter-bombers, to take the fight to their opponents, win air superiority over the battlefield, and thus have their hands free to interdict the Somali supply links to stop the invasion cold. This air victory practically sealed the fate of the Somali juggernaut in Ogaden, especially so once Ethiopia convinced Cuba and the Soviet Bloc to support her instead of Somalia. In a fit of pique, Somalia forced all Soviet advisers to leave the country. Already bitter over similar experiences in Egypt in 1972, Moscow's revenge was designed as a clear message: nobody was to treat her in such fashion again. The USSR subsequently launched an air bridge to Ethiopia, unique and unprecedented in its extension and importance, delivering huge quantities of armament and equipment necessary for the Ethiopians to reconquer Ogaden, and beyond. In turn Somalia asked the USA for help and thus occurred an unprecedented switch of Cold War alliances. This volume details the history and training of both Ethiopian and Somali air forces, their equipment and training, tactics used and kills claimed, against the backdrop of the flow of the Ogaden war. It explains in detail, supported by over 100 contemporary and exclusive photographs, maps and color profiles, how the Ethiopian Air Force won the decisive victory in the air by expertly deploying the F-5Es - unequaled in maneuverability, small size and powerful armament - to practically destroy the Somali Air Force and its MiG-17s and MiG-21s.
