Book The Creation of Wing Chun

Download or read book The Creation of Wing Chun written by Benjamin N. Judkins and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the social history of southern Chinese martial arts and their contemporary importance to local identity and narratives of resistance. Hong Kong's Bruce Lee ushered the Chinese martial arts onto an international stage in the 1970s. Lee's teacher, Ip Man, master of Wing Chun Kung Fu, has recently emerged as a highly visible symbol of southern Chinese identity and pride. Benjamin N. Judkins and Jon Nielson examine the emergence of Wing Chun to reveal how this body of social practices developed and why individuals continue to turn to the martial arts as they navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving environment. After surveying the development of hand combat traditions in Guangdong Province from roughly the start of the nineteenth century until 1949, the authors turn to Wing Chun, noting its development, the changing social attitudes towards this practice over time, and its ultimate emergence as a global art form.

Book Martial Arts Studies

Download or read book Martial Arts Studies written by Paul Bowman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase “martial arts studies” is increasingly circulating as a term to describe a new field of interest. But many academic fields including history, philosophy, anthropology, and Area studies already engage with martial arts in their own particular way. Therefore, is there really such a thing as a unique field of martial arts studies? Martial Arts Studies is the first book to engage directly with these questions. It assesses the multiplicity and heterogeneity of possible approaches to martial arts studies, exploring orientations and limitations of existing approaches. It makes a case for constructing the field of martial arts studies in terms of key coordinates from post-structuralism, cultural studies, media studies, and post-colonialism. By using these anti-disciplinary approaches to disrupt the approaches of other disciplines, Martial Arts Studies proposes a field that both emerges out of and differs from its many disciplinary locations.

Book Mastering Wing Chun Kung Fu

Download or read book Mastering Wing Chun Kung Fu written by Samuel Kwok and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the keys to the Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu system are explained. The three hand sets are shown in detail, along with the application of the key movements. One of the keys to Wing Chun is laying a proper foundation. The first form Siu Lim Tao (Little Idea) is the development of that foundation. While the first form teaches the correct structure of the attacks and defensive movements, it is in Chum Kiu that the student learns to "seek the bridge" and use both hands simultaneously, such as one hand defending while the other attacks. The third form, Biu Gee (Thrusting Fingers), also known as the (First Aid) form, teaches the keys to recovery from the loss of a superior position in fighting. Biu Gee training is one of the keys to learning to focus energy into a strike. Also covered is the Chi Sao (Sticking Hands) training of Wing Chun, as well as the key principles that have made Ip Man Wing Chun one of the most famous Kung Fu systems in the world.

Book Complete Wing Chun

Download or read book Complete Wing Chun written by Robert Chu and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master the many styles of Wing Chun Kung Fu with this expert martial arts guide. With the fame of Bruce Lee, the conditions in Hong Kong, and the hard work and effort of many of his classmates, the Wing Chun of the late master Yip Man became one of the most well-known and popular Chinese martial arts in the world. Although this gave Wing Chun international recognition, it also led to a lot of misconceptions. Due to a lack of authentic information, many mistakenly came to assume that the renowned Yip Man was the sole inheritor of the style and that his Wing Chun was the lone version of the art. In fact, there are several different and distinct systems of Wing Chun. Unfortunately, over the years most of these systems have remained unseen or unreported to all but a few--until now. Profusely illustrated with over 300 historical photographs, Complete Wing Chun: The Definitive Guide to Wing Chun's History and Traditions presents seldom seen information on a dozen branches of the Wing Chun art. It offers the reader side-by-side comparison of these arts by outlining each system in terms of Wing Chun history, principles, basics, and training methods: Yip Man Wing Chun Yuen Kay-San Wing Chun Kuen Gu Lao Wing Chun Kuen Nanyang Wing Chun Kuen Pan Nam Wing Chun Kuen Pao Fa Lien Wing Chun Kuen Hung Suen Wing Chun Kuen and more!

The first part addresses fundamentals such as the history, life benefits, concepts, principles, and basic training—including footwork, kicks, arm movements, and reflexes—that characterize the art. Bridging the gap between wing chun and other fighting styles, the second portion explains how a wing chun artist is able to exploit the vulnerabilities in defensive and offensive systems such as kickboxing, grappling, and karate. The third and final section discusses how this particular brand of kung fu is highly effective in street combat—both empty-handed and with weapons—as well as against single and multiple opponents.

Book Ving Tsun for the 21st Century

Download or read book Ving Tsun for the 21st Century written by Adie Gray and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An honest book about life and martial arts. Ving Tsun, Wing Tsun or Wing Tjun are the names used throughout the world for this beautiful art. However, in Hong Kong it is written as Ving Tsun. The Ving Tsun Athletic Association headquarters was opened in 1967.After 28 years of security work - personal, club and venue, as well as many years in private security - I believe I have the experience to guide you through the dos and don'ts of what can and what will happen in real-life street violence.Reason the book was written When I set out to write this book I didn't want it to be one where I told the reader how tough I was. Nor did I want it to be all about techniques, or me telling you This is the gospel set in stone'. I wanted to make sure the depth was there for all to see. It has been my real-life experience, as well as having such a great Sifu explaining so much and in such great depth during my time spent with Ip Ching in Hong Kong, that makes me think I am more than qualified to cast an educated eye. This isn't just a Ving Tsun book, this is a book about certain experiences of violence of which Ving Tsun forms a significant part.During my early encounters of violence and reality of street fighting, my interest was sparked about certain fighting arts and made me ask the question "Would they work in real brutal street situations?".Benefits I'd like to think I can give you a different perspective without you having to live my indifferent life. The world is changing very quickly, and in my educated humble opinion I don't think for the better. I truly believe we all have a duty to our loved ones and our friends, to go through life having honest, educated and quiet - when possible - opinions. People like me have lived, as I said, a different life and seen enough violence to understand we shouldn't go through life wearing those rose tinted glasses.I've made some awful mistakes in the past that I believe I would never get away with in today's society of namby-pamby liberal gumpf. However, it has given me a hands on view that helps me guide you, the reader, away from the mistakes we can all fall into.Target Audience If you are a student of Ving Tsun, whatever lineage, but would like an insight into the Ip Man Lineage through Ip Mans son, Ip Ching, then this book has the essence from many lessons I've had the pleasure of attending with my Sifu, Ip Ching.
