Book Different Blood The Vampire as Alien

Download or read book Different Blood The Vampire as Alien written by Margaret L. Carter and published by Writers Exchange E-Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different blood flows in their veins--but our blood quenches their thirst. From Bram Stoker's 1897 creation of Count Dracula, portrayed as a foreign invader bent on the conquest of England, the literary vampire has symbolized the Other, whether his or her otherness arises from racial, ethnic, sexual, or species difference. Even before the bloodsucking Martians of H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds, however, popular fiction contained a few vampires who were members of alien species rather than supernatural undead. Even more intriguing than interplanetary invaders are humanoid and quasi-humanoid beings who have evolved to live on Earth among us, often camouflaged as our own kind. The boom in vampire fiction that began in the 1970s engendered a variety of "alien" vampires, many of them portrayed as sympathetic characters. The science fiction vampire is especially suited to the presentation of vampirism as morally neutral rather than inherently evil. Different Blood surveys the literary vampire as alien, whether extra-terrestrial or a different species evolved on Earth, from the mid-1800s to the 1990s, and analyzes the many uses to which science fiction and fantasy authors have put this theme. Their works explore issues of species, race, ecological responsibility, gender, eroticism, xenophobia, parasitism, symbiosis, intimacy, and the bridging of differences. An extensive bibliography lists dozens of novels and short stories on the "vampire as alien" theme, many of which are still in print.

Sorceresses Aetria and Coleni discover that both their own births and the history of their world have been manipulated in secret by an ancient, powerful race of dragons. All, however, have their own agendas with human beings and mortal magic as pawns. Emerging from their long-lost mother's hidden home in the deserted Non-Lands, Aetria and Coleni find themselves targeted by assassins under control of the dragons. While the sisters' powers continue to grow, so do the magical gifts of Coleni's baby daughter, but will their magic provide adequate protection? Meanwhile, still viewed with suspicion for their "wild sorcery", they can't convince most of their rivals and allies, including Aetria's old mentor and the commanding general of the army, that the dragons and the danger they pose are real.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind Walker has dreamed for seasons of a better place for his starving tribe. Once proud Bison Hunters, they must find another way to live in order to survive. Driven north by drought, they search for a place they can claim as their own. A place where the woodland tribes will not try to enslave or kill them. They reach the shores of Lake Superior, where tales of monsters and evil spirits keep their enemies from settling the apparently barren and cold land. They are the First Americans to claim this new land. The Dream Weavers portrays the life and death struggle of these First Americans while weaving in an abundance of adventure and romance. The novel takes you on a journey of discovery where Wind Walker’s people learn not only to survive but thrive. By canoe they travel along the edge of Lake Superior, where they are the first to discover copper in the Great Lakes Region. They experience the very edge of the continental glaciers north of Isle Royal where they see the last of the Wooly Mammoths grazing on the tundra. The story is set at the beginning of the Archaic period, more than 8000 years ago, before copper was first discovered in the Great Lakes region. The dependence on large animals is all but gone and the use of plants is becoming more important. In this new land they discover an abundance of food, friendly spirits to guide and protect them and most of all copper, the wonderful metal that led to the later development of the Wisconsin Copper Culture. The People struggle to understand the secrets held stubbornly in the raw metal. Only Wind Walker seems able to make the valuable copper tools that give them an advantage over their enemies, an advantage which they must work hard to keep secret.

Book Beyond the Night

Download or read book Beyond the Night written by Nadine Farghaly and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werewolves, witches, vampires, demons, gods, zombies, and shape-shifters; these are just a few examples of the monstrous that society is confronted with. Most people have some knowledge about these creatures, and have had fleeting contact with ghosts, fairies, vampires and goblins, either in their imagination, or while reading, watching, or interacting with other people (whether in reality or the online world). From Beowulf and Buffy, to Freddy Krueger and Frankenstein’s Monster, this collection highlights different aspects of the monstrous, and discusses various ways in which they can be read, discussed, and understood. What does the mother in Beowulf really represent? How can the character of Zoey Redbird really be understood? What is the importance of memories in Buffy the Vampire Slayer? And what should we make of Terry Pratchett’s undead creatures? And what role does the children-friendly vampire play? Beyond the Night offers a range of insights into these topics, as well as many more. It presents the reader with a vast array of old and new creatures in popular culture, analysing the significance they have for wider society. This collection will also help readers to understand their favourite monsters better in relation to questions concerning sexuality, gender, social change, and otherness.
