This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ... II How We Found Mojave WHEN the automobile was delivered into our hands at Los Angeles we wanted to turn around immediately and drive back through the Cajon Pass into the Mojave Desert, but our inquiries about directions met with discouragement on every side. It seemed to be unheard of for two women to attempt such a thing; the distances between the towns where we could get accommodations were too great and the roads were apt to have long stretches of sand where we would get stuck. Our friends drew a dismal picture of us sitting out in the sagebrush beside a disabled car and slowly starving to death. "You could not fix it," they said, "and what would you do?" We suggested that we might wait until somebody came along. They assured us that nobody ever came along. We went to the Automobile Club; they received us with enthusiasm and told us about all the places California is proud of and how to get to them, but California seems not to be proud of the desert, for when we mentioned it our advisers became gloomy. They seemed to have no very definite information and were sure we would not like it. In the face of so much discouragement we hardly dared to ask about Death Valley and when we did, hesitatingly, the question was ignored. We simply could not get there, nobody ever went. The Imperial Valley seemed to be almost as bad. One of the maps they gave us showed a main highway from San Diego over into it, but they said that it was only a gravel road, mountainous and steep, and that we had better stick to the main routes. Evidently they had no faith in our skill as drivers, nor belief in our purpose, so we soon gathered up the maps and innumerable folders about resort hotels, thanked them, and went our way. The collection contained no map of the...

Book The White Heart of Mojave

Download or read book The White Heart of Mojave written by Edna Brush Perkins and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ardent early suffragette, Edna Brush Perkins set out in 1920 with her friend, Charlotte Hannahs Jordan, to journey into the Mojave, both women seeking to escape civilization and their struggle to secure voting rights for women. The Mojave at that time was considered to be a desolate, inaccessible region - part of the fading American frontier. Originally published in 1922, this is Perkins' account of this journey. Her evocative writing describes the landscape and the people she encounters. As editor Peter Wild writes, this is ultimately the story of two wealthy women who enter Death Valley as a sort of middle-aged lark and emerge from the trip profoundly changed.

Book excerpt: Tude (To-day) is a familiar variation of the Hispanic name Arturo. It is both the title of this book and the name of its principal character. The setting is the Mojave Desert. In the guise of an ancient tortoise, Tude contends the Mojave is the cradle of an ancient, ordered society -- a society much older, separate and apart from man's, governed by the laws of natural selection and adaptation. Until recently, it had few threats. Now, man and his machines are destroying it. Tude knows man, having been his captive. He and a young protege, Uta (You-tah), begin a quest to answer the universal questions regarding man's role and responsibilities in the cosmos. Their story begins south of Death Valley near the Amargosa River and ends at Lavic Dry Lake, east of Pisgah. Or, does it? That is the question each reader must answer.

Download or read book Bronco Racing written by John Elkin and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuffed with never-before-seen photography, stories, and race results, Bronco Racing: Ford’s Legendary 4x4 in Off-Road Competition is the most definitive publication ever on this marque’s racing success! In 1965, legendary builder and off-road aficionado Bill Stroppe was one of the first to test the new Bronco in off-road conditions. In March 1966, Stroppe introduced his racing Bronco to the press at the Bronco Roundup, where racing ace Ray Harvick pounded the Santa Ana river bottom with his tuned machine to win Top Eliminator at the Four-Wheel-Drive Grand Prix at Riverside, and the rest is history. Ford’s Bronco dominated the off-road racing scene and captured coveted titles in the Mint 400, Baja 500, and dirt racing’s crowning achievement: the Mexican 1000/Baja 1000. As the first-generation Bronco gave way to the second-generation machine (1978), racing Broncos continued to devour the competition until Ford pulled the plug on the rig in 1996. Complementing the legendary Broncos featured here, you will also hear the tales of their wranglers, including Parnelli Jones, Rod Hall, Larry Minor, Shelby Hall, James Garner, Don Barlow, James Duff, Bill Rush, and the aforementioned Ray Harvick and Bill Stroppe. The infamous mounts covered include Big Oly/Crazy Colt, Pony, Big Hoss, Crazy Horse, Stove, and Colt. Diligently penned by Bronco racing historian John Elkin, this book is the most comprehensive collection of historical accuracy ever authored on this subject. Pull your belts tight and wipe your goggles clean one last time with Bronco Racing: Ford’s Legendary 4x4 in Off-Road Competition!
