Book Illusion of Order

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard E. Harcourt
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2005-02-15
  • ISBN : 9780674038318
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Illusion of Order written by Bernard E. Harcourt and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to challenge the broken-windows theory of crime, which argues that permitting minor misdemeanors, such as loitering and vagrancy, to go unpunished only encourages more serious crime. The theory has revolutionized policing in the United States and abroad, with its emphasis on policies that crack down on disorderly conduct and aggressively enforce misdemeanor laws. The problem, argues Bernard Harcourt, is that although the broken-windows theory has been around for nearly thirty years, it has never been empirically verified. Indeed, existing data suggest that it is false. Conceptually, it rests on unexamined categories of law abiders and disorderly people and of order and disorder, which have no intrinsic reality, independent of the techniques of punishment that we implement in our society. How did the new order-maintenance approach to criminal justice--a theory without solid empirical support, a theory that is conceptually flawed and results in aggressive detentions of tens of thousands of our fellow citizens--come to be one of the leading criminal justice theories embraced by progressive reformers, policymakers, and academics throughout the world? This book explores the reasons why. It also presents a new, more thoughtful vision of criminal justice.

Book Sociology Windows on Society

Download or read book Sociology Windows on Society written by Robert H. Lauer and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005-02-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh edition of Lauer and Lauer's best-selling anthology Sociology: Windows On Society has been significantly updated with fifteen new selections. The book continues to draw on both contemporary sources and the classical literature of sociology to explore the nature of social life, with an emphasis on issues of gender, race/ethnicity, and inequality. The editors have chosen articles that challenge preconceived notions and conventional wisdom while also demonstrating the distinctive power of the sociological viewpoint. The units are divided into parts to show how the selections fit into the topics covered in the introductory course. Major concepts are highlighted and explained in the introductions to the units, parts, and in each selection. Review questions and application projects encourage students to get involved in the learning process and help them better understand social research and methods. Related websites have been added to each selection so that students can pursue additional research on their own or as part of an assignment. Also new to this edition is a subject index. New selections in the seventh edition address such topics as: * The issue of equality in marriage compared across thirteen nations * How culture influences the sexuality of Asian Americans * Why some men are regular customers of strip clubs * Socializing problems of interracial couples * Why poverty is a structural, not a personal, problem * Everyday sexism * The economic differences between Republicans and Democrats * The issue of national security versus civil liberties * How technology affects interpersonal relationships * Violence and suffering among prostitutes * How social movements affect social policy

Book Opening Windows

  • Author : Kate Sherren
  • Publisher : University Press of Colorado
  • Release : 2024-05-15
  • ISBN : 1646426304
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Opening Windows written by Kate Sherren and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third decennial review from the International Association for Society and Natural Resources, Opening Windowssimultaneously examines the breadth and societal relevance of Society and Natural Resources (SNR) knowledge, explores emergent issues and new directions in SNR scholarship, and captures the increasing diversity of SNR research. Authors from various backgrounds—career stage, gender and sexuality, race/ethnicity, and global region—provide a fresh, nuanced, and critical look at the field from both researchers’ and practitioners’ perspectives. This reflexive book is organized around four key themes: diversity and justice, governance and power, engagement and elicitation, and relationships and place. This is not a complacent volume—chapters point to gaps in conventional scholarship and to how much work remains to be done. Power is a central focus, including the role of cultural and economic power in “participatory” approaches to natural resource management and the biases encoded into the very concepts that guide scholarly and practical work. The chapters include robust literature syntheses, conceptual models, and case studies that provide examples of best practices and recommend research directions to improve and transform natural resource social sciences. An unmistakable spirit of hope is exemplified by findings suggesting positive roles for research in the progress ahead. Bringing fresh perspectives on the assumptions and interests that underlie and entangle scholarship on natural resource decisionmaking and the justness of its outcomes, Opening Windows is significant for scholars, students, natural resource practitioners, managers and decision makers, and policy makers.

Book Fences and Windows

Download or read book Fences and Windows written by Naomi Klein and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-08-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fences and Windows: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the Globalization Debate brings together two years of Naomi Klein’s writings and tracks the globalization conflict from Seattle to September 11th and beyond. Since the publication of No Logo, Naomi Klein has continued tirelessly as a brilliant and informed contributor to contemporary debate. Fences and Windows: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the Globalization Debate, intended as a companion to No Logo, includes her most notable essays, speeches and articles on issues from NAFTA to Genetically Modified Organisms to the violence in Genoa. It offers introduction and explanation, looking at where the movement has come from and where it is going. More than any other single voice, Naomi Klein articulates the concerns and complaints of a generation: about economic fundamentalism, the criminalization of dissent and the effects of Free Trade. But this book also reflects on the nature of resistance: the street protests that shocked and energized millions, carnival-style subversion and the apparent disorganization that is anti-globalization’s great strength. Fences and Windows: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the Globalization Debate is provocative, intelligent and passionate, a document, in its own right, of a unique time in our history.

The symposium was thoughtfully planned, organized, and supported by the ISHPC Organizing C- mittee and its collaborating organizations. The ISHPC-V program included two keynote speeches, several invited talks, two panel discussions, and technical sessions covering theoretical and applied research topics in high–performance computing and representing both academia and industry. One of the regular sessions highlighted the research results of the ITBL project (IT–based research laboratory, http://www.itbl.riken.go.jp/). ITBL is a Japanese national project started in 2001 with the objective of re- izing a virtual joint research environment using information technology. ITBL aims to connect 100 supercomputers located in main Japanese scienti?c research laboratories via high–speed networks. A total of 58 technical contributions from 11 countries were submitted to ISHPC-V. Each paper received at least three peer reviews. After a thorough evaluation process, the program committee selected 14 regular (12-page) papers for presentation at the symposium. In addition, several other papers with fav- able reviews were recommended for a poster session presentation. They are also included in the proceedings as short (8-page) papers.
