Book excerpt: With the help of a magical creature named AboGado, Rashad and Angie visit planet Venus, and are given a guided tour by Venus, herself! Venus explains how to find 'her' in the sky (at morning or evening). When they climb through AboGado's portal they experience a bumpy ride on Venus' cloud cabana while she guides them to see the major features of the surface of the planet, including pancake mountains, folded tessera, gigantic craters, ocean trench-like lowlands, and continent-like highlands. She regales with stories about the Morning Star from many cultures. In Aztec legend, Venus was a twin god, good in the morning, and the evil twin at evening; in Greek legend, Venus was a goddess of love with the story of Echo & Narcissus. Finally, in a Native American legend, the Morning Star helps a young man escape from a bear. Beautiful photographs throughout the book illustrate how a person observes different phases of Venus back on Earth, from crescent shaped, to full. Other photographs include an occultation of Venus, and Venus appearing in selected constellations as part of its 'wandering' nature. When they get home, Rashad gets a nasty lesson in the chemistry of Venus' clouds. With a foreword by Tony Spear, the project manager of NASA's historic Magellan mission to Venus. A glossary to scientific and technical terms is included.

Book Windows to Adventure

Download or read book Windows to Adventure written by Claudia Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2015-02-14 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While exploring the old orchard after school, Angie and Rashad debate a vocabulary word they have to define for homework: "majesty." Is it greatest: 'power'? 'age' 'beauty' or 'size'? In the orchard, they discover a magical creature - an old, broken down window calling itself 'AboGado.' When AboGado volunteers to take them places, Rashad readily agrees, while Angie is not so sure, wanting a little more information about the safe uses of the creature's abilities. She agrees to one trip as a trial. AboGado takes them to visit mountains to explore their word-assignment. Ancient Denali is reclusive, hiding behind his clouds, while Fuji is vain about his beauty. Mauna Kea (the baby of the bunch age-wise) complains about not being taken seriously as the world's biggest, while Kilimanjaro offers his opinion about both 'biggest', and a comment about 'tallest, ' with a recommendation that they visit Everest. Before they decide, AboGado takes them to see Olympus Mons, on Mars, Maxwell Montes, on Venus, and Rheasilvia, on asteroid Vesta. There is, of course, no answer to this question, but the mountains clarify aspects of the word. Upon their safe return, Angie assumes custody of the magical creature. With foreword by Dr. Chris Russell, leader of the Dawn Mission to asteroids Vesta and Ceres. A glossary of technical terms, and index, are included. Dr. Yvonne Pendleton [astronomer] "The book concept is spectacular! The series is amazing! I love this little character, AboGado! (I know his NUMBER!), and that the science that comes through loud and clear. The images are the perfect, mesmerizing addition to the creative story. On behalf of children everywhere, and the lucky parents who will read these stories multiple times, thank you."

Book excerpt: The Belonging Tree is a thoughtful picture book about respect, inclusion, and acceptance in a woodland community of animals from writer Maryann Cocca-Leffler and illustrator Kristine A. Lombardi. Life was ordinary in the big oak tree on Forest Lane. Squirrels lived in every part of the tree, and the Gray squirrel family inhabited the knot in the middle. But the neighborhood starts to change as the big oak tree welcomes families of chipmunks, beavers, and birds. And with each new arrival, the Grays become increasingly unhappy. Can’t everything remain just as it was? It will take an unexpected moment of heroism from a thoughtful inhabitant to finally open hearts and bind together this diverse animal community. Book excerpt: 21 days without power. 2 brothers on a desperate trek. 72 hours before time runs out... The Lockwood brothers are supposed to be able to survive anything. Their dad, a hardcore believer in self-reliance, has stockpiled enough food and water at their isolated Nevada home to last for months. But when they are robbed of all their supplies during a massive blackout while their dad is out of town, John and Stew must walk 96 miles in the stark desert sun to get help. Along the way, they’re forced to question their dad’s insistence on self-reliance and ask just what it is that we owe to our neighbors, to our kin, and to ourselves. From talented newcomer J. L. Esplin comes this story of survival and determination as two young brothers confront the unpredictability of human nature in the face of desperate circumstances. “A suspense thriller, survival story, and a story of the love between brothers.
