Book Pitcairn Island as a Port of Call

Download or read book Pitcairn Island as a Port of Call written by Herbert Ford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pitcairn Island is arguably the most isolated inhabited spot on Earth. Yet despite tricky ocean currents, often lethal surf and sudden gales, the island's standing as the home of the descendants of Fletcher Christian and his mutineer cohorts from H.M.S. Bounty has drawn thousands of ships to its shores. This maritime history of the island chronicles every ship that has called at Pitcairn from the time of the arrival of the mutineers in 1790 to December 2010. The ship's log format lists the date of each call, the ship's name and particulars, and brief reports of activities during the call, which often include matters of love, murder, survival, intrigue, shipwreck, romance, and much more. Since Pitcairn remains totally dependent on ships for its survival, this work offers the most thorough historical record of the island and its people.

Book Maritime Networks

Download or read book Maritime Networks written by César Ducruet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime transport is one of the most ancient supports to human interactions across history and it still supports more than 90% of world trade volumes today. The changing connectivity of maritime networks is of crucial importance to port, transport, and economic development and planning. The way ports, terminals, but also cities, regions and countries, are connected with each other through maritime flows is not well-known and difficult to represent and measure, even for the transport actors themselves. There is a strong, urgent need for reviewing the relevant theories, concepts, methods, and sources that can be mobilized for the analysis of maritime networks. With contributions from reputable scholars from all over the world, this book investigates the analysis of maritime flows and networks from diverse disciplinary angles going across archaeology, history, geography, regional science, economics, mathematics, physics, and computer sciences. Based on a vast array of methods, such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, complex networks, modelling, and simulation, it addresses several crucial issues related with port hierarchy; route density; modal interdependency; network robustness and vulnerability; traffic concentration and seasonality; technological change and urban/regional economic development. This book examines new evidence about how socio-economic trends are reflected (but also influenced) by maritime flows and networks, and about the way this knowledge can support and enhance decision-making in relation to the development of ports, supply chains, and transport networks in general. This book is an ideal companion to anyone interested in the network analysis of transport systems and economic systems in general, as well as the effective ways to analyse large datasets to answer complex issues in transportation and socio-economic development.

Book In Bristol Fashion

Download or read book In Bristol Fashion written by Jr Burgess and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has compiled an adventure memoir in photo essay form, recalling when he worked as volunteer 1975-1980 aboard historic ships of the San Francisco Maritime Museum. He learned from the crew of the Cape Horn square-rigger Balclutha (1886), now moored permanently at the end of the Hyde Street Pier. He later went on to become president of the Friends of the Eppleton Hall Society, which operated the steam side-paddle estuary tug, Eppleton Hall (1914). She had steamed over from England 1969-1970 by officers of the maritime museum. The beloved tug had many daring and amusing jaunts on San Francisco Bay, with one long trip to Lost Isle, on the San Joaquin River near Stockton, CA. This ugly duckling was loved by those volunteers and families who made her operational. Her notoriety was such that the captain of the Queen Elizabeth 2 gave the tug a commemorative crystal when that great liner made her first visit to San Francisco in April 1978. About that time the author was the West Coast liaison for Sea History magazine, the publication of the National Maritime Historical Society in Peekskill, NY. The tug was retired when the maritime museum was later turned over to the National Park Service. The book closes with the author's lively account when, in June 1980, he was guest aboard the U.S. Coast Guard square-rigger Eagle, when she sailed, with scuppers awash, from Boston's OpSail to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. From the introduction by Peter Stanford, President Emeritus of the NMHS..."The book's title, In Bristol Fashion, is the seaman's universal expression of the highest mark for a job done in true seamanly fashion - a well-earned tribute to the people from varied walks of life who saved an abandoned treasure, to a spirit that shines through this book."
