Book British Tramp Shipping 1750 1914

Download or read book British Tramp Shipping 1750 1914 written by Robin Craig and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the history of tramp-shipping in the United Kingdom, between 1750 and 1914. It defines ‘tramp’ as steamships exclusively hulled with iron or steel. The purpose of the journal is to keep the history of tramp-shipping from fading into obscurity, as the author believes the tramp steamer does not invoke sentimentality nor provide enough glamour to sustain the same level of maritime interest enjoyed by sailing ships or ocean liners. The study is split into four major sections, the first concerning tramp-shipping, ownership, and capital formation; the second concerning trade, specifically copper ore and African guano; the third studies tramp seamen - particularly sea masters; and the final and largest section considers individual tramp-shipping regions, further subdivided by region - Wales, the Northwest, the West Country, the Northeast, the Southeast, and Canada. The volume is punctuated with statistics, tables, charts, glossaries, and concludes with a bibliography of author Robin Craig’s further maritime writing.

Download or read book Windjamming to China written by Gustav Tjgaard and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sailing is a proud American tradition and 'Windjamming to China' evokes that tradition in a way that it will never be forgotten. 'Windjamming to China' sails on the fringes of history. It covers the first half of the twentieth century, a time when almost all wind-driven vessels of the sailing age had been replaced by steam and diesel. In the larger sense, the book is about the American sailor, a folk character and even a hero, who speaks through the mists of 200 years of history, shouting for recognition. The American sailor was born on the icy shores of Plymouth, he was rocked by the waves.

Book From Ship s Cook to Baronet

Download or read book From Ship s Cook to Baronet written by David Jenkins and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Reardon Smith (1856-1935) was one of the foremost figures in south Wales in the early twentieth century. His was a classic story of ‘rags to riches’ - starting life as a deck-hand and ship’s cook sailing from his native Appledore in 1870, he was a master mariner at the age of twenty-two and subsequently commanded many of the fine sailing ships owned by Hugh Hogarth & Sons of Glasgow. A long-cherished ambition to become a shipowner was eventually realised in 1906 when he acquired his first steamship, City of Cardiff. The venture prospered and nine vessels were owned on the eve of the First World War. He subsequently showed great entrepreneurial initiative during the depression, acquiring motor vessels and establishing new trade routes. He is also remembered as a great philanthropist, particularly through his association with the National Museum of Wales – during his term as treasurer (1925-28) and president (1928-32), he restored the museum’s faltering finances and enabled the construction of the it’s east wing which is now so integral a part of Cardiff’s dignified civic centre. His establishment of the Reardon Smith Nautical School in Cardiff in 1921 was another notable achievement; this school provided an opportunity for aspiring deck officers to learn the essential skills appropriate to their chosen careers. He also funded hospital developments in Cardiff and Bideford, and endowed the chair of geography at Exeter University. At the time of his death in December 1935, fulsome tributes were paid to him both by his fellow shipowners and by the principals of those organisations which had benefitted from his generosity; many of those who live in south Wales and the West country today still enjoy that legacy

Book Conrad in the Public Eye

Book excerpt: This is a collection of difficult-to-find and typically early commentary on Conrad¿s life and works. The selections contained shed light on Conrad¿s life and works, as well as the way in which his works were promoted to the public. Selections include those by the American novelist Christopher Morley and the Irish novelist Liam O¿Flaherty. Also included is a previously unpublished essay by Conrad¿s friend Richard Curle. Of particular interest are the promotional materials, which are collected together for the first time and reveal how Conrad was perceived by the general reading public and how he was marketed by his publishers.

Book Exploration Fawcett

Download or read book Exploration Fawcett written by Percy Harrison Fawcett and published by Sanzani Edizioni. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for the major motion picture "The Lost City of Z," mystic and legendary British explorer Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett spent 10 years wandering the forests and death-filled rivers of Brazil in search of a fabled lost city. Finally, convinced that he had discovered the location, he set out for the last time toward destination “Z” in 1925, never to be heard from again. This thrilling and mysterious account of Fawcett’s ten years of travels in deadly jungles and forests in search of a secret city was compiled by his younger son, Fawcett's companion on his journeys, from manuscripts, letters, and logbooks. An international sensation when it was first published in 1953, Exploration Fawcett was praised by the likes of Graham Greene and Harold Nicolson, and found its way to Ernest Hemingway's bookshelf. Reckless and inspired, full of fortitude and doom, this is a book to rival Heart of Darkness, except that the harrowing accounts described in its pages are completely true. To this day, Colonel Fawcett's disappearance remains a great mystery.

Download or read book Sailing Ships written by Edward K. Chatterton and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story of sailing ships has been written primarily for the general reader, in the hope that the sons and daughters of a naval nation, and of an Empire that stretches beyond the seas, may find therein a record of some interest and assistance in enlarging and systematising their ideas on the subject, especially as regards the ships of earlier centuries. I trust that both the yachtsman and sailorman will find in these pages something of the same exiting pleasure which has been mine in tracing the course of the evolutions through which their ships have passed. A well written and beautifully illustrated historical account that starts with the early Egyptian ships from 6000 BC and covers the development of sailing ships until the beginning of the 20th century. Reprint of the original edition from 1909.
