Book Wind Tunnel Modeling of Plume Rise and Dispersion

Download or read book Wind Tunnel Modeling of Plume Rise and Dispersion written by Gordon Richard Winkel and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel to investigate plume rise and plume growth in neutral atmospheric conditions. The modeling of fullscale plumes in the wind tunnel was studied. The use of plume momentum and the flux of buoyancy as scaling criteria proved successful in modeling plume behaviour. If this criteria is used the stack gas density can be varied between model and fullscale to achieve higher wind tunnel speeds with no effect on plume rise or dispersion. The study shows that careful attention must be given in modeling source conditions such as the stack efflux velocity profile due to its strong influence on plume rise and plume spread. The effects of both initial upward stack gas momentum and buoyant forces on plume rise were combined in a single expression that correlated with plume rise data in the wind tunnel. Plume rise was found to terminate at a downwind distance of 2200 L_ , where L is a buoyancy length scale for a plume, for the simulated atmospheric boundary layer shear flow tested. The effect of wind shear in the approach flow reduced plume rise by about 20% as compared to a uniform flow. The theory of Djurfors and Netterville (1978) closely predicted the reduction in plume rise due to wind shear. The Gaussian dispersion model for an elevated point source correctly characterized plume dispersion in the wind tunnel. Freestream velocity at stack height was chosen as a representative plume convection velocity for the Gaussian model. The plume spread due to buoyancy induced turbulence was measured in the wind tunnel and an expression was found to fit the data. Subsequent measurements showed that the interaction of buoyancy induced turbulence and atmospheric turbulence was nonlinear. An appropriate nonlinear correction was developed and successfully corrected for the initial growth due to buoyancy induced turbulence so that the spread due to atmospheric turbulence was recovered.

Book Wind Tunnel Modeling of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Download or read book Wind Tunnel Modeling of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer written by Sreemanth Pagadala and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The importance of simulating atmospheric flows in wind tunnels has been well established. Experiments were conducted in the Modified Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel to determine the suitability of this wind tunnel for simulating atmospheric flows and the degree to which various aspects of modeling could be fulfilled. A temperature profile to simulate the inversion aloft was generated inside the test section, and then an appropriate velocity profile was built in by means of screen mesh arrangements. The turbulence characteristics of the flow were measured. The validity of the temperature, velocity and turbulence fields were examined. It was found that while the temperature and velocity profiles were quite valid, the turbulence generated by the screen mesh arrangement was too high. The test section being short, turbulence could not be damped out to the required level. A model smoke stack was introduced into the test section to observe the effect of the modeled inversion on the plume. The smoke velocity could not be effectively controlled, and the plume could only be observed a very short distance downstream. Therefore, the plume path was not very realistic. Other smoke tests in the test section showed maximum turbulence at the surface and no significant change when the temperature profile was introduced"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book Wind Flow and Vapor Cloud Dispersion at Industrial and Urban Sites

Download or read book Wind Flow and Vapor Cloud Dispersion at Industrial and Urban Sites written by Steven R. Hanna and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key component of risk reduction is reducing the potential consequences that could result from toxic or flammable releases. The science of vapor cloud dispersion has advanced significantly in recent years, but one of the long-standing challenges has been in accounting for dispersion around buildings, equipment, and similarly sized geologic and man-made features. With current concerns about terrorism in industrial and urban sites, improving consequence modeling within industrial and urban sites is more important than ever This new definitive book advances the science of vapor cloud dispersion by: ·Describing how structures at an urban or industrial site affect dispersion, and how these effects should be treated in consequence models ·Explaining surface roughness length (z0) and displacement length (d) so that they are clarified for readers with minimal meteorological background ·Presenting criteria for when the structures should be considered broadly as roughness elements, or when they should be considered from the viewpoint of their wake effects ·Defining conditions for which different models apply and providing continuous solutions for transitions between flow regimes. ·Providing the appropriate roughness inputs to transport and dispersion models depending on conditions. ·Demonstrating the application of these techniques through worked examples.

Book Wind Tunnel Testing of Interactions of High Altitude Rocket Plumes with the Free Stream

Download or read book Wind Tunnel Testing of Interactions of High Altitude Rocket Plumes with the Free Stream written by H. K. Smithson and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions of model rocket plumes and the free stream at varying simulated altitudes have been investigated in an altitude simulation chamber. Free-stream variables were Mach number, gas, total temperature, and total pressure. Model rocket parameter variables were exhaust gas, area ratio, chamber total pressure and total temperature, and the orientation of the model relative to the free stream. In addition to pitot probe measurements, plume photographs and density measurements were obtained using the electron beam technique. (Author).
