Book Wind Tunnel Magnus Characteristics of the 7 caliber Army Navy Spinner Rocket

Download or read book Wind Tunnel Magnus Characteristics of the 7 caliber Army Navy Spinner Rocket written by W. Luchuk and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind tunnel test program on the 7-caliber Army-Navy Spinner Rocket has been completed in the NOL 40 X 40 cm Aeroballistics Tunnel No. 1. Magnus force and moment measurements have been mad at Mach numbers of 0.291, 0.600, 0.810, 0.914, 1.57, 1.77, 1.90, 2.21 and 2.46 and at angles of attack up to 20 degrees. The Magnus measurement problem for the wind tunnel is examined, and a discussion of the instrumentation used to overcome this problem is presented. The results of the test program are presented in coefficient form and a comparison with the results from the Aberdeen Ballistics Ranges is presented. It is shown that there is agreement between the Naval Ordnance Laboratory wind tunnel and the Aberdeen range results at supersonic speeds, and that the Magnus coefficients are non-linear with angle of attack.

Book Supersonic Wind Tunnel Magnus Measurements of the 7 8 9 and 10 caliber Army Navy Spinner Projectile

Download or read book Supersonic Wind Tunnel Magnus Measurements of the 7 8 9 and 10 caliber Army Navy Spinner Projectile written by John E. Holmes and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army-Navy Spinner Projectile is a research shape that has been used as the foundation of many spin stabilized weapon designs. The purpose of the wind tunnel tests was to make supersonic wind tunnel Magnus measurements on AN Spinner configurations of 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-caliber lengths. Such an experimental study indicates the effect of length on the Magnus force and moment for a basic spin stabilized shape. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reviews both theoretical and experimental investigations of the Magnus effect on arbitrary bodies of revolution. The main emphasis is on spinning projectiles at angle of attack, both with and without fins. Flow visualization measurements are used to assess the accuracy of the existing theories. Laminar, turbulent, and mixed boundary layers are considered. (Author).

Book Design for Control of Projectile Flight Characteristics

Download or read book Design for Control of Projectile Flight Characteristics written by United States. Army Materiel Command and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents a general survey of the principal factors affecting the flight of projectiles, and describes the methods commonly used for predicting and influencing the flight performance. The coefficients which characterize the aerodynamic forces and moments of a moving body are identified, methods for determining the coefficients applicable to a projectile having a given shape and center of gravity location are described, and the coefficients of a number of projectiles and projectile shapes are given. The use of aerodynamic coefficients in predicting stability, range and accuracy is described. The effects of variations in projectile shape and center of gravity location on range, accuracy and lethality are discussed. Some material on prototype testing and the effects of round-to-round variations in production lots is presented.

Book Supersonic Magnus Measurements of the 10 Caliber Army Navy Spinner Projectile with Wrap around Fins

Download or read book Supersonic Magnus Measurements of the 10 Caliber Army Navy Spinner Projectile with Wrap around Fins written by Frank J. Regan and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research configuration was formed by attaching wraparound fins in a cruciform arrangement to a 10-caliber Army-Navy spinner projectile. This configuration was tested in a supersonic tunnel to get the Magnus force and moment, as well as the normal force and pitching moment. Model spin rate was generated by means of fin cant.

Book The Effect of Conical Boattails on the Magnus Characteristics of Projectiles at Subsonic and Transonic Speeds

Download or read book The Effect of Conical Boattails on the Magnus Characteristics of Projectiles at Subsonic and Transonic Speeds written by George I. T. Nielsen and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted on the Army-Navy Spinner Rocket at subsonic and transonic speeds to determine the influence of boattail configuration on the aerodynamic characteristics of projectile shapes. The boattail configurations consisted of a square base, 1/2- and 1-caliber, 7 degree conical boattails, and an in-caliber fin boattail. Data were obtained on the 5- and 7- caliber configurations at Mach 0.26 and from Mach 0.8 to 1.02. Data were also obtained on the 4- and 6-caliber models at Mach 0.26.

Book Techniques for Measurement of Dynamic Stability Derivatives in Ground Test Facilities

Download or read book Techniques for Measurement of Dynamic Stability Derivatives in Ground Test Facilities written by Clarence John Schueler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the techniques in current use for measuring dynamic stability derivatives in wind tunnels are described, with emphasis given to the important features of balance system design, data reduction methods, instrumentation and typical balance systems. The use of gas bearings for dynamic stability and roll damping balances is treated and a three-degree-of-freedom balance system employing a spherical gas bearing is described. (Author).

Book Static Stability and Magnus Characteristics of the 5 inch High Capacity Spinner Rocket at Low Subsonic Speeds

Download or read book Static Stability and Magnus Characteristics of the 5 inch High Capacity Spinner Rocket at Low Subsonic Speeds written by J. E. Greene and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The static stability and Magnus characteristics of a 1.227 scale model of the 5-inch High Capacity Spinner Rocket have been determined for yaw angles of 0 degree through 28 degrees and for spin rates up to 10,000 RPM. The maximum diameter of the model was 6 inches. These tests were performed in the DTMB 8 x 10 foot low subsonic wind tunnel at speeds of 211 and 260 feet per second. The results of this investigation show that the Magnus force and moment characteristics of the projectile are non-linear functions of the body spin rate and angle of yaw. In addition, the test results also show that high rotational speeds make the configuration less unstable, statically, and my, under certain conditions of spin and yaw, cause the rocket to be statically stable.

Book Wrap around fin WAF Pressure Distribution

Download or read book Wrap around fin WAF Pressure Distribution written by John E. Holmes and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal difference between a wrap around fin and a planar fin is that the WAF exhibits an induced rolling moment at zero degree angle of attack, while a straight fin has none. The Naval Ordnance Laboratory, along with other members of The Technical Cooperation Program, initiated a joint investigation into the causes of the induced roll moment. Measurements of the pressure distribution over both the convex and concave sides of a WAF showed that the primary difference in pressure across the fin occurred immediately behind the leading edge with the pressure on the convex side apparently being affected more by the curvature than that on the concave side. In general, for a WAF with fixed curvature, it appeared that the physical characteristic which would have the most effect on changing the roll moment would be the fin cross-sectional profile, especially the leading-edge profile. (Author).
