Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been conducted to determine the performance and static stability and control characteristics of an external-flow jet-flap transport configuration having inboard pod-mounted engines and full-span triple-slotted flaps. Tests were made with the engines mounted clustered at 22.0 percent and 30.4 percent semispan to represent double (Siamese) pods and with engines mounted at 22.0 percent and 41.7 percent semispan to represent a more spread arrangement. Tests were also made to evaluate the effectiveness of wing leading-edge blowing as a means of improving the aerodynamic efficiency of the configuration and of eliminating the large engine-out roll asymmetries that , occurred for the configuration when the wing with an engine out stalled first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise data were obtained with a model of an externally blown flap of the type that is currently being considered for STOL aircraft. The noise caused by impingement of the jet on the flap is much louder than the nozzle jet noise. It is especially so directly below the wing. The noise level increases as the jet velocity and flap angle are increased. The sound power level increased with the sixth power of velocity. Several physical variations to the STOL model configuration were also tested. Two such variations, a large board and a slotless curved plate wing, had the same power spectra density (Strouhal number curve) as the model.

Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of temperature and composition on alloy softening in group VIA metals Cr, Mo, and W alloyed with Re. Results showed that alloy softening was similar in all three alloy systems occurring at homologous temperatures less than 0.16 and at Re concentrations less than 16 atom percent. Rhenium content required to produce a hardness minimum diminished rapidly in all three systems with increasing test temperature. The similarities in hardness behavior in these three alloy systems suggesat common softening mechanism which may arise from lowering the Peierls stress.
