Book excerpt: Legends say that long ago a mystical order of men and women walked the earth. They were known as the Seers. Stories claim that they saw the invisible, knew the unknowable, and performed impossible feats of power. They wandered the earth as champions for the oppressed and heralds of days to come. Seers were cloaked in mystery and suspicion, but when they spoke, the wise listened. Elijah is a Seer, widely considered to be the greatest of their order. He is called to confront the powerful King Ahab with five simple words, “There will be no rain.” The Seer narrates the dangerous, exciting and God-given journey of the prophet Elijah in an entertaining and engaging way. This young adult adventure brings the ancient story to life and shows that when gods battle for the future of mankind, one person can change everything.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of twenty-two essays, a product of recent revivals of interest in both Midwestern history and intellectual history, argues for the contributions of interior thinkers and ideas in forming an American identity. The Midwest has been characterized as a fertile seedbed for the germination of great thinkers, but a wasteland for their further growth. The Sower and the Seer reveals that representation to be false. In fact, the region has sustained many innovative minds and been the locus of extraordinary intellectualism. It has also been the site of shifting interpretations—to some a frontier, to others a colonized space, a breadbasket, a crossroads, a heartland. As agrarian reformed (and Michigander) Liberty Hyde Bailey expressed in his 1916 poem “Sower and Seer,” the Midwestern landscape has given rise to significant visionaries, just as their knowledge has nourished and shaped the region. The essays gathered for this collection examine individual thinkers, writers, and leaders, as well as movements and ideas that shaped the Midwest, including rural school consolidation, women’s literary societies, Progressive-era urban planning, and Midwestern radical liberalism. While disparate in subject and style, these essays taken together establish the irrefutable significance of the intellectual history of the American Midwest.

Book Seer s Blood

Book excerpt: A mountain community under siege rediscovers its lost roots--and its magic--in the grit of an outcast girl, the heart of a stranger, and the mystical touch of lost seer's blood. A book once honored by Andre Norton in the Gryphon Award. When Blaine Kendricks discovers strangers in Shadow Hollers, she thinks they've come to trade. She couldn't be more wrong. When Dacey Childers comes to Shadow Hollers, Blaine's family thinks he's there to hunt game. They couldn't be more wrong. When the Annekteh come to Shadow Hollers, they think the isolated community living there has no way to resist their invasion. They're pretty much right on target. But the last man of the lost seer's blood has returned, and is about to draw Blaine into his magic, his adventure...and the most dangerous hunt she could ever imagine. "With this book, Doranna Durgin displays her customary precision in plot (tangled yet plausible, with tension that fairly hums from the page), setting (richly rendered and full of fresh, original details that truly delight), and characterization (thoughtful, layered, and well able to drive the plot).... Seer's Blood is low fantasy at its very best, showing how great events affect people on a small scale." --Hypatia's Hoard "SEER'S BLOOD is a fast-paced magical adventure. Doranna Durgin imbues her characters with heart and soul, making the reader care about them in ways that are rare in fiction." --Alan Meitlowski, BookHound "Doranna Durgin has been quietly turning out low key but very intriguing fantasy novels, of which this is the newest and in many ways the best." --SF Chronicle "The author creates high adventure with a subtle touch of romance here. Durgin's writing is full of mountain flavor, and her characters, both human and canine, are strong and clear.... This is an intense story that should appeal to...fantasy fans." --VOYA "On the surface Doranna Durgin's SEER'S BLOOD is Blaine's coming of age story in the deep hills of Appalachia, but this time of evil and Durgin's exactly right ear for dialect and regionalisms make it so much more. Readers will find themselves immersed in a world where self-reliance and resilience is brutally interrupted by evil in men's clothing and the return of magic to the lonely hollows. The fear and isolation associated with early mountain life is captured in this almost cultural study of Americana with its complex picture of love and loss. And the hounds, oh, my! Right along with Blaine, I fell in love with the hounds. This is a delicious read!" --Cynthia Felice, Author of Downtime

Book Peter Apocalyptic Seer

Download or read book Peter Apocalyptic Seer written by John R. Markley and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2013 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study fills a gap in previous research concerning the portrayal of Peter in Matthew, especially the research of narrative-critical studies. Although narrative-critical studies generally recognize that Matthew has portrayed Peter and the disciples as recipients of revelation at points, they almost entirely neglect the apocalypses or apocalyptic literature more broadly as a potentially helpful background for this motif, nor does the motif itself figure significantly into their conclusions. Therefore, Part 1 of this study examines fourteen different Jewish and Christian apocalypses in order to determine generic aspects of how the apocalypses portray their seers, and to identify specific textual features that support these generic aspects of a seer's portrayal. These specific textual features then provide the guiding coordinates for Part 2, which assesses the influence of the generic portrayal of apocalyptic seers on the portrayal of Peter and the disciples in Matthew's Gospel and main source, Mark's Gospel. Like the apocalypses, both Evangelists deploy the features of exclusionary statements, narrative isolation, dissemination details, and emphasis of cognitive humanity and emotional-physical humanity to portray Peter and the disciples as the exclusive recipients of revealed mysteries, and as humans who encounter the mysteries of the divine realm. This leads to the conclusion that both Evangelists envisaged Peter and the disciples as apocalyptic seers in some sense. However, Matthew's redaction of Markan source material, incorporation of Q source material, and his own special material yield a more fully developed, or more explicit, portrayal of Peter and the disciples as apocalyptic seers than his Markan predecessor. The study concludes by focusing directly on Peter's significance for Matthew and his earliest audience. The research suggests that Peter's significance was, in part, as principal apocalyptic seer, which requires revision to the predominant scholarly conclusions about Peter in Matthew.
