Book Wind Energy in Colombia

Download or read book Wind Energy in Colombia written by Walter Vergara and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wind regime in Colombia has been rated among the best in South America. However, under the current circumstances, and on its own, the interconnected system would not likely promote wind power. This report is targeted to analysts, planners, operators, generators and decision makers in Colombia and other countries in the region and provides a set of policy options to promote the use of wind power. The potential instruments assessed in this study include financial instruments, government fiscal mechanisms, and adjustments to the regulatory system. The single most effective policy instrument to promote wind power in Colombia consists on valuing the firm energy offered by wind, its potential complementarity to the hydrological regime and enabling wind power an access to reliability payments.

Book Offshore Wind Licensing in Colombia

Download or read book Offshore Wind Licensing in Colombia written by Ignacio Herrera Anchustegui and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America has the cleanest energy matrix in the world and is expected to have 70% of its electricity consumption generated from renewable energies by 2030. Colombia is an energy-rich country with an abundance of oil and gas reserves, although these are declining. Colombia also has a large installed hydropower capacity, accounting for up to 70% of the country's electricity production. Despite this, there is a growing impetus to develop offshore wind projects to diversify Colombia's energy mix. More generally, Colombia has spearheaded the energy transition in Latin America in recent times and it aims to use this opportunity to foster an industrial policy shift. Offshore wind development forms part of Colombia's proposed energy transition and, more broadly, the region's energy transition. While there are no wind turbines in Colombian territorial waters or Exclusive Economic Zone, Colombia has some of the best wind resources in the world, with Net Capacity Factors (NCFs) up to 70% in the waters located near the Guajira Peninsula, in the Caribbean Sea, northwest of the country. The Colombian case is pioneering in the Caribbean and worthy of an in-depth study. Colombia has taken the development of its regulatory framework seriously, engaging in consultations and collaboration with different institutions and energy agencies to prepare its legislation. This makes the Colombian legal regime for unconventional renewables a front-runner in 'offshore wind legal technology'. Given that permit rounds are to be allocated later in 2023, Colombia will become the first country in the Caribbean to start projects in earnest. Its legal framework is likely to receive attention and be replicated in several Latin American jurisdictions that share language and legislative and regulatory legal cultures or legal traditions. Colombia and Brazil are the first Latin American countries to firmly set in motion offshore wind projects and aspirations, and Colombia's legal offshore wind regime appears to be the most advanced in Latin America, and is comparable (or better) to that used in Spain.

Book Financial Coverage Portfolio for Wind Power Generation in Colombia

Download or read book Financial Coverage Portfolio for Wind Power Generation in Colombia written by Juan Camilo Rueda Ramírez and published by . This book was released on 2019* with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colombian government has decided to invest in Non-Conventional Renewable Energies (NCRE) to expand the power grid and generate a higher resilience in the whole grid towards the climatological phenomenon. In the month of October 2019, the government has auctioned 8 NCRE projects for a total installed capacity of 1,398MW . Six of the eight projects that were auctioned and have to be fully operational for the year 2022 are Eolic projects. Many risks are associated with the development of these projects, some of them are associated with the investments, but mainly the NCRE projects have a big variability given the weather conditions and the location they are developed. Given that the revenue generated by the company depends solely in the quantities of energy generated and the price of energy at the moment it is sold, financial derivatives can help hedge the risk associated therefore by changing the coverage ratio of the amount of the energy that is produced with financial instruments the project may generate a more certain NPV that creates value for the project, always depending on the value of the price of the energy hedged.

Book Renewing Destruction

Download or read book Renewing Destruction written by Alexander A. Dunlap and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renewing Destruction examines how wind energy projects impact people and their environments. Wind energy development, in Mexico and most countries, fall into a ‘roll out’ neoliberal strategy that is justified by climate change mitigation programs that are continuing a process of land and wind resources grabbing for profit. The result has been an exaggeration of pre-existing problems in communities around land, income-inequality, local politics and, contrary to public relations stories, is devastating traditional livelihoods and socio-ecological relationships. Exacerbating pre-existing social and material problems in surrounding towns, wind energy development is placing greater stress on semi-subsistence communities, marginalizing Indigenous traditions and indirectly resulting in the displacement and migration of people into urban centers. Based on intensive fieldwork with local groups in Oaxaca, Mexico, this book provides an in-depth study, demonstrating the complications and problems that emerge with the current regime of ‘sustainable development’ and wind energy projects in Mexico, which has wider lessons to be drawn for other regions and countries. Put simply, the book reveals a tragic reality that calls into question the marketed hopes of the green economy and the current method of climate change mitigation. It shows the variegated impacts and issues associated with building wind energy parks, which extends to recognizing the destructive effects on Indigenous cultures and practices in the region. The book, however, highlights what to consider or, more importantly, what to avoid if one is working with industrial-scale wind energy systems.

Book Introduction to Renewable Energy

Download or read book Introduction to Renewable Energy written by Vaughn C. Nelson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world population grows and places more demand on limited fossil fuels, renewable energy becomes more relevant as part of the solution to the impending energy dilemma. Renewable energy is now included in national policies, with goals for it to be a significant percentage of generated energy within the coming decades. A comprehensive overview, Introduction to Renewable Energy explores how we can use the sun, wind, biomass, geothermal resources, and water to generate more sustainable energy. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the book integrates economic, social, environmental, policy, and engineering issues related to renewable energy. It explains the fundamentals of energy, including the transfer of energy, as well as the limitations of natural resources. Starting with solar power, the text illustrates how energy from the sun is transferred and stored; used for heating, cooling, and lighting; collected and concentrated; and converted into electricity. A chapter describes residential power usage—including underground and off-grid homes—and houses that are designed to use energy more efficiently or to be completely self-sufficient. Other chapters cover wind power; bioenergy, including biofuel; and geothermal heat pumps; as well as hydro, tidal, and ocean energy. Describing storage as a billion-dollar idea, the book discusses the challenges of storing energy and gives an overview of technologies from flywheels to batteries. It also examines institutional issues such as environmental regulations, incentives, infrastructure, and social costs and benefits. Emphasizing the concept of life-cycle cost, the book analyzes the costs associated with different sources of energy. With recommendations for further reading, formulas, case studies, and extensive use of figures and diagrams, this textbook is suitable for undergraduates in Renewable Energy courses as well as for non-specialists seeking an introduction to renewable energy. Pedagogical Features: End-of-chapter problems Numerous case studies More than 150 figures and illustrations A solutions manual is available upon qualifying course adoption
