Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wind Directions for Prescribed Burning in Southeastern United States Prescribed burning is now being used for many purposes in the Southeast, such as fuel reduction, control of undesirable hardwoods, seedbed preparation, and disease control. Ideal weather for these burns varies with the purpose of the burn, the quantity and type of available fuel, and stand conditions. Prae ticing foresters differ in opinion as to the best weather for many of these pur poses and conditions. In some years, the best burning conditions for a Specific purpose may occur so infrequently that it may be necessary to burn during less favorable conditions. For example, the consensus in Florida, Georgia, and probably over much of the Southeast is that fuel reduction burning is best with a cold, steady wind from the North after a winter rain. 2/ 3/ 4/ 5/ In many places a steady north wind is rare. Book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems

Download or read book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems written by Thomas A. Waldrop and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. A new appreciation and interest has developed in recent years for using prescribed fire in grasslands, especially hardwood forests, and on steep mountain slopes. Proper planning and execution of prescribed fires are necessary to reduce detrimental effects, such as the impacts on air and downstream water quality. Book Managing Smoke at the Wildland urban Interface

Download or read book Managing Smoke at the Wildland urban Interface written by Dale D. Wade and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When prescribed burning is conducted at the wildland-urban interface (WUI), the smoke that is produced can sometimes inconvenience people, but it can also cause more serious health and safety problems. The public is unlikely to continue to tolerate the use of prescribed fire, regardless of the benefits, if burn managers cannot keep smoke out of smoke-sensitive areas. In the South, forest management organizations commonly require that plans for prescribed burns pass a smoke screening review and some States require such a review before they will authorize a burn. Current screening systems, however, do not incorporate criteria for use at the WUI. This guide describes modifications to the Southern Smoke Screening System for burns at the WUI. These modifications couple new research findings with the collective experience of burners who have extensively used the 1976 Southern Smoke Screening System. This new smoke screening system is designed for use on burns less than 50 acres in size and has undergone several years of successful field testing in Florida.
