Book Capturing the Characteristic

Download or read book Capturing the Characteristic written by Ryan Michael Czekaj and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the function of transcription in the modernwind ensemble. Data were gathered via the creation of an original transcription, interviews withElgar scholars, a survey of the Big Ten Band Directors Association, and an analysis of concertprograms from Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) bands. Elgars Mazurka from the ThreeCharacteristic Pieces, Op. 10 was transcribed for modified wind ensemble. Live interviews wereconducted in July 2018 with ten Elgarians from a variety of musical backgrounds. All BTAAband directors were contacted and asked to complete a survey consisting of six open-endedquestions, as well as submit concert programs for their ensemble(s) from fall 2013-spring 2018.Findings suggest that a modern transcriber must actively seek to capture a composers sound, through means such as a conceptual transcription and manuscript study. All Elgariansinterviewed stated that the transcription of the Mazurka preserves the characteristics of Elgarssound. Out of twelve total characteristics of quality transcriptions listed by responding BTAAdirectors, 62.5% of respondents included integrity of the music is preserved and 56.3%included transcription writes for winds with characteristic sounds. Of the 1,909 performancescatalogued in this study, 416 (21.8%) were transcriptions, with 297 (15.6%) being specificallytranscriptions of orchestral literature.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this thesis is to examine transcriptions for the wind band derived from varying original media, i.e., orchestral works, opera, keyboard literature and choral compositions, with the ultimate goal of providing qualitative, and where possible quantitative, assessments for answering the simple question "Is this a good transcription?" To that end it is first necessary to ask "How does one define a transcription?" and "What makes a transcription good?""--Page 1.

Book Expert Wind Band Directors Perceptions of the Purpose and Value of Transcriptions in the Wind Band Repertoire

Download or read book Expert Wind Band Directors Perceptions of the Purpose and Value of Transcriptions in the Wind Band Repertoire written by Michael Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcriptions have been an integral part of the wind band tradition, establishing the foundation of the wind band repertoire in its earliest days of existence. However, since the mid twentieth century, some individuals have advocated the exclusive performance of original works in order to encourage composers to develop an original band repertoire. The discussion of the relative merits of transcriptions and their role in the overall repertoire continues today, even though they continue to be performed and created. The purpose of this study was to describe expert wind band conductors' (a) perceptions of the purpose and value of transcriptions in the wind band repertoire, (b) approaches to score study of transcriptions, and (c) pedagogical approaches to teaching transcriptions to an ensemble. Participants (n 125), members of the American Bandmasters Association, completed an online questionnaire (Wind Band Transcription Questionnaire WBTQ). Analysis of the data collected revealed a high level of agreement among participants regarding the role and importance of transcriptions in the wind band repertoire. Quality transcriptions appear to be an accepted part of the band literature and have value to both members of bands and the bands' audiences.

Book Transcribing from Brass Band to Wind Band A Comparison of Approaches and Methods and Subsequent Transcription of Gypsy Dream by Peter Graham

Download or read book Transcribing from Brass Band to Wind Band A Comparison of Approaches and Methods and Subsequent Transcription of Gypsy Dream by Peter Graham written by Brian MacDonald Shelton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brass band and wind band had similar repertoires in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with marches, dances, solos, and transcriptions written prominently for both ensembles. The repertoires diverged at the beginning of the twentieth century as brass band contests commissioned new and original works and international composers began writing serious works for wind band. In the 1970s, British composer Philip Sparke succeeded in writing music for both ensembles and subsequently began to create a shared repertoire, and other composers started contributing to this repertoire. As this repertoire has proliferated, much of it has become worthy of serious study. The purpose of the current study is to find shared scoring tendencies between three transcriptions: one written by the original composer; a second transcribed by a different composer; and a third transcribed by both the original composer and a different composer. The works selected wereThe Year of the Dragonby Philip Sparke (transcribed by the composer), Variations for Brass Bandby Ralph Vaughan Williams (transcribed by Donald Hunsberger), andCall of the Cossacksby Peter Graham (transcribed by the composer and Mick Dowrick). There were several effective instrumentation choices the works shared, including woodwind prominence in solo and lyrical passages, double reeds substituting for small brass ensembles, and high woodwinds written one or more octaves above the original. Adapting these choices, the author created a transcription ofGypsy Dream, the second movement ofCall of the Cossacks. Further, these commonalities can serve as guidelines for other transcribers to arrange brass band works for wind band and expand this shared repertoire.
