Book Float Your Boat

  • Author : Mark Denny
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2008-12-15
  • ISBN : 0801895685
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book Float Your Boat written by Mark Denny and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 4.1 million people in the United States participate in recreational sailing. Yet the large library of sailing literature leaves many of them high and dry. On one side are technical guides for America’s Cup boat-builders; on the other, simplistic books for weekend sailors with little interest in science. In Float Your Boat! professional and amateur boaters alike will find intelligent and understandable answers to such questions as: What were the key innovations that made sailboats more efficient? How do you increase the speed of a boat? How do sailboats travel into the wind? Why are so many explanations of sailing so wrong? Sailing enthusiast and physicist Mark Denny first traces the evolution of the sailing craft, from prehistoric coracles made of animal skins and antlers to the sailboat’s reinvention as a pleasure craft during the Industrial Revolution. He then identifies specific sailing phenomena—how wind drives modern Bermuda sloops, how torque determines stability, why hull speed exists—and provides the key physics principles behind them. Whether you are an inquisitive landlubber who has never set foot in a boat, a casual weekend sailor, or an old salt who lives for the sea, Float Your Boat! is an accessible guide to the physics of sailing.

Book To Harness the Wind

Download or read book To Harness the Wind written by Leo Block and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man was a sailor long before he invented the wheel or straddled a horse, and his adventures at sea changed the course of history. Initially he was able to sail only downwind, but the Cretans and Phoenicians made design improvements to sails that permitted sailing across and eventually against the wind. The Vikings optimized the performance of the square sail, and the Dutch modified the Arab lateen to create the sail commonly used today. Leo Block tells the story of the evolution of sails and relates it to historic events and other factors that affected the performance of sailing vessels. Numerous illustrations help explain the technical factors involved. Focusing mainly on European improvements, Block details the progress of sail design from the lateen to the square, fore and aft, and classic rigs right up to the swift clipper ships of the nineteenth century just before the advent of steam power. Written in laymen's terms, the book is an excellent learning tool for readers who know little about the history of sailing vessels and a quick reference guide for sailors who want a reminder of how their craft evolved.

Book Sailing Against the Wind

Download or read book Sailing Against the Wind written by Toni Larson and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sailing Against the Wind" was written in 1980, though never published. It is an accounting of the three years the Larson family lived and traveled on a ketch rigged sailboat. The book is intended, not as an instruction manual on how to sail, but entirely as a diary of daily life and the difficulties found in close quarters while at sea. All five family members kept journals and when Toni sat down to write this, the journals gave a clear and accurate guide for her to work with. Over all the years since this manuscript was written, people have quizzed them, "What was it like? How did you do it? Was it hard? Were you scared?" The manuscript answers all those questions and has been shared with friends and family who were curious. The book does not cover the finer details of charting, trimming sails, repairing the engine, etc. Instead, it reveals how to live, survive, love and learn as a family while sailing against the wind. Now, in this era of downsizing into boats, rv's and tiny houses this diary of events may have relevance. The mid-1970s were the last years before the introduction of personal computers, the Internet, email, GPS, ATM, cell phones, and all forms of advanced electronics. Those things were not even available on the most luxurious boats at the time this adventure occurred. Navigation tools in the '70s were almost identical to that of explorers some 250 years before. However, if all those wonderful inventions had been available, it still would not have saved them from the many mishaps they encountered. And that is the lesson of this book.

Book Downwind Faster Than the Wind

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicholas Landell-Mills
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-08-02
  • ISBN : 9781912724246
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Downwind Faster Than the Wind written by Nicholas Landell-Mills and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New analysis shows how Newton and Galileo provide a straightforward and useful explanation of sailing. According to Newton, the sail re-directs a mass of air of the apparent wind backwards to create a backward force (Force = ma). The reactive equal and opposite forward force pushes the sailboat ahead. According to Galileo a boat can sail downwind faster than the wind for the same reasons that it can sail upwind faster than the wind. Each tack is simply the mirror image of the other one. This is because in both situations the sailboat experiences a headwind, and the true wind is moving backwards relative to the boat. When sailing both upwind and downwind, the sail extracts momentum and energy from the true wind by slowing it down. That's it.

Book The Sea Takes No Prisoners

Download or read book The Sea Takes No Prisoners written by Peter Clutterbuck and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a classic real-life story of derring do on the high seas, complete with extreme risk, last-minute ingenuity and many near-misses. Beginning in the 1960s, this book tells of the real life adventures of the author as a boy – a time of boarding schools, long holidays and an unbelievable (to today's parents) amount of freedom and danger. Encouraged by his parents (who lived abroad) to become more independent and self-sufficient, Peter decided to see how far he could get in his family's small open dinghy Calypso. Aged 16, he spent a winter restoring her, before pootling straight out into a force 7 gale and very nearly capsizing, after which he headed back to land to plan even more extreme adventures. Calypso was a Wayfarer, a small (16ft) and very popular class of open dinghy; a boat designed for pottering around coastlines and estuaries during the day. But along with the occasional brave crewmate, Peter managed to sail her across the Channel, through the Bay of Biscay, down the French canals and into the Mediterranean, then up into the North Sea and the Baltic to Oslo, living aboard for three months at a time. These were some of the longest voyages that anyone had ever achieved in an open boat, where (as Peter says) you 'have to be like a tightrope walker, concentrating on balance day and night, fully aware of the consequence of relaxing your vigilance'. He survived huge waves, nine rudder breakages in heavy seas, dismasting, capsizes, and hallucinations caused by sleep deprivation. He also managed it on a tiny budget, working as a farm labourer, hitchhiking everywhere, and at times living on one meal of cereal a day, to save the maximum amount for his boat. Charming, quite British in style, beautifully written and a lovely insight into a seemingly golden time, this is primarily a great read, but will be of huge practical use to anyone wanting to go that bit further in their dinghy. It also includes a lovely Foreword by world-famous yachtsman Brian Thompson.
