Book Survey of Medieval Winchester

Download or read book Survey of Medieval Winchester written by Derek Keene and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1985 with total page 1062 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the fourteenth century Winchester had lost its former eminence, but in trades, manufactures, and population, as well as by virtue of its administrative and ecclesiastical role, the city was still one of the major provincial centres in England. This Survey is based on a reconstruction of the histories of the houses, plots, gardens, and fields in the city and suburbs between c. 1300 and c. 1540, although in many instances both earlier and later periods are also covered. The reconstruction takes the form of a gazetteer (Part ii) of 1,128 histories of properties, together with accounts of 56 parish churches and the international fair of St. Giles, all illustrated by detailed maps. There is also a biographical register (Part iii) concerning more than 8,000 property-holders, most of whom lived in Winchester. This is the first time that it has been possible to piece together such a precise and detailed picture of both the topography and the inhabitants of a medieval town. Part i of the book contains a full discussion of the significance of this material and, in a manner relevant to an understanding of life in medieval towns in general, describes and defines such matters as the evolution of the physical environment, housing, land-tenure, property values, the parochial structure, the practice and organization of trades, and the ways in which the citizens of Winchester adapted to the declining status of their city.

Book The Industrial Revolutions Volume 1

Download or read book The Industrial Revolutions Volume 1 written by J. Chartres and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1994-03-23 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain in the sixteenth century appeared little different from its European neighbours, and shared their renewed 'Malthusian' pressures, as population growth threatened the resource base of the economy. Yet, by the later seventeenth century, Britain had broken the limits imposed by food production. With the development of its trade, transport and industry, and the effective integration of its economy as a whole, the country was becoming by the later eighteenth century more urban and industrial than its neighbours, and was rapidly overtaking the Netherlands as the least 'rural' country in Europe. This volume of key readings sets British development in its broad context and, in presenting the strong evidence of the extent and nature of its economic advance in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, provides the critical backgrond for the understanding of the late process of British industrialization.

Book excerpt: An impressively thorough exploration of the changing functions, character and experience of English towns in a key age of transition which includes smaller communities as well as the larger industrialising towns. Among the issues examined are demography, social stratification, manners, religion, gender, dissent, amenities and entertainment, and the resilience of provincial culture in the face of the growing influence of London. At its heart is an authoritative study of urban politics: the structures of authority, the realities of civic administration, and the general movement for reform that climaxed in the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present St Paul's Cathedral, Christopher Wren's masterpiece, is the fourth religious building to occupy the site. Its location in the heart of the capital reflects its importance in the English church while the photographs of it burning during the Blitz forms one of the most powerful and familiar images of London during recent times. This substantial and richly illustrated study, published to mark the 1,400th anniversary of St Paul's, presents 42 scholarly contributions which approach the cathedral from a range of perspectives. All are supported by photographs, illustrations and plans of the exterior and interior of St Paul's, both past and present. Eight essays discuss the history of St Paul's, demonstrating the role of the cathedral in the formation of England's church and state from the 7th century onwards; nine essays examine the organisation and function of the cathedral during the Middle Ages, looking at, for example, the arrangement of the precinct, the tombs, the Dean's household during the 15th century, the liturgy and the archaeology. The remaining papers examine many aspects of Wren's cathedral, including its construction, fittings and embellishments, its estates and income, music and rituals, its place in London, its library, its role in the book trade and its reputation.
