Book Winchester Long Rolls 1723 1812 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Winchester Long Rolls 1723 1812 Classic Reprint written by Clifford Wyndham Holgate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winchester Long Rolls, 1723-1812 In the spring of 1899, Mr. Holgate published his Winchester Long Rolls, 1653 - 1721, the first volume of a work for which he had been collecting materials since 1885. The text of a second volume, upon the same plan, was already in print at the time of his death; and it is by his request that I have undertaken to complete the book according to his intentions. The Long Rolls from 1723 to 1812, here reproduced in extenso from the originals, received the benefit of his own careful editing. It will be noticed that, while the first volume ended with the Roll of 1721, the present begins with that of 1723. The gap is due to the fact that the Roll of 1722 is one of those of which no copy has come to light, notwithstanding diligent inquiry during eighteen years. The earliest Roll as yet discovered is dated 1653. The years for which Rolls are still wanted are 1654 - 1667 (inclusive), 1669, 1671, 1682, 1687, 1703, 1705, 1711, 1715, 1718, and 1722. One new discovery has been made since the first volume went to press - the missing Roll of 1689, an account and transcript of, which will be found in Appendix II. Any information leading to the discovery of other missing Rolls would be most welcome. The elaborate and exhaustive Historical Introduction on the Development of Long Roll, prefixed by Mr. Holgate to the former volume, renders any lengthy introduction of mine superfluous. To that I would refer all inquirers who desire information upon matters of detail. With certain points which have since been raised I have dealt in some of the Appendices. It may, however, be advisable here briefly to recapitulate the sources from which Mr. Holgate Obtained the Rolls which he examined and transcribed. Book Winchester Word Book

Download or read book Winchester Word Book written by R. G. K. Wrench and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winchester Word-Book: A Collection of Past Present Notions The history of an old man is of infinitely more interest than the promise of a young one. And so, probably, of words: the past of "ferk" is more interesting than the future of "boycott" and the old words which have dropped out of classical English, but survived in the dialects, appeal to us with a force quite beyond that of the consciously created slang which springs up from day to day in schools, the Universities, or sporting circles. It is in this association with past ages that much of the language of Winchester College can fairly claim a position which slang cannot: we have not made it, we have inherited it, and its survival is not a little remarkable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bug-Hunting, Specially Round About Winchester The beginner - that much abused being in all treatises purchases a net, a Cyanide bottle, one or perhaps two setting boards, some things called pins, but which rather resemble aboriginal spears, a collecting box and a store box, and is happy. I do not wish to quarrel with any of his paraphernalia, excepting only those awful implements sold as mixed pins of various sizes. But I do wish to point out, in as short and practical a way as possible, certain errors in the use of these various implements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picturesque Memorials of Winchester Within a still more recent period, however, a further advance, not less agreeable than surprising, has taken place in the same department of literature; by Which the splendour of topographical deco ration is maintained and even enhanced, While the expenses of its circulation are brought within a compass suitable to the pretensions not of peers and princes only, but of the vast, the intellectual, and enlightened mass of the community. AS a general means of gratifying literary taste, no light advantages may be anticipated from this extended influence of' Topography. But, besides this, there is a nobler philosophy, as well as a deeper policy, than has yet been properly developed, in attaching men, by examples of natural and artificial beauty, to the scenes of their childhood, education, residence, or other less direct associations; in unfolding to their view every hidden resource, and teaching them to love and revere whatever is lovely and venerable around them; in investing, as far as may be, the natural charms of home With those outward fascinations, which we are too apt to attribute only to distant and unknown regions in thus adding one more to the many other inducements that might be urged for domestic gratitude and content - reviving the recollections of the absent, and fixing the affections of the wavering. Book A History of Winchester College Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Winchester College Classic Reprint written by Arthur Francis Leach and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Winchester College This is the first attempt at a connected and complete history of Winchester College and School "from the earliest times to the present day." The compression of the history of five hundred years into five hundred small pages is no easy task. Opinions will doubtless differ as to whether certain periods and certain aspects of the School life in that period have been treated in too great or too little detail. In all, I have endeavoured to go to first-hand evidence or first-class authorities, in spite of considerable obstruction in some quarters where it was least expected. Winchester being regarded as the origin and fountain head of the great system of Public School education, a considerable, though not, it is hoped, an undue amount of, space has been given to the ascertainment of its true place in the history of English education, and its relations to prior schools in general and those of Winchester in particular. If new light has been shed on this matter, I have to express my gratitude to the Very Reverend W. R. W. Stephens, Dean of Winchester, for the exceptional facilities afforded me of access to and use of the Cathedral records; and to the Rev. F. T. Madge, the librarian, for much information. Book In Praise of Winchester

Download or read book In Praise of Winchester written by An Audrey Locke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Praise of Winchester: An Anthology in Prose and Verse Winchester, though she has undergone many vicissitudes, has never before been 'anthologised.' This is my justification for gathering together material 'in praise of Winchester.' This, and my love for her. No attempt has, of course, been made to give a complete suggestion of the history of Winchester by means of the chosen excerpts. That would involve, in the early centuries, at least, a history of England. I have simply caught at a few echoes. It may be objected that some of them are not harmonious echoes; that is to say, are not 'literature.' To this I would answer that the connotation of the term 'anthology, ' although its natural limits cover only 'a collection of the flowers of verse, ' has been so widely extended that it might even be used to describe a collection of political speeches. In dealing with 'Winchester in fiction, ' it will be seen that I have rejected the whole-hearted identification of Anthony Trollope's Barchester with Winchester. Here and there he has certainly introduced a memory of Winchester, as for instance in the description of what is obviously St. Swithun's Church, disguised as 'St. Cuthbert's, ' in The Warden. However, a careful study of The Warden, Barchester Towers, and the Last Chronicle of Barset shows the topography to be rather that of Salisbury than Winchester. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winchester: Its History, Buildings and People For our facts, as being all at secondhand, we claim no merit of originality, and undertake no burden of responsibility. Much that has been called in question by modern critics, we have deliberately stated as fact, preferring to steer clear of controversy. It has rather been our design to present a plain, clear story of the town, and to enable the reader to form in his mind some picture of its past. Living in our quiet humdrum way, it is too seldom that we remember the stirring times our city has wit nessed, the great part she has played in the making of England. Each time we step out of our houses we tread on ground that has known the feet of kings and queens, makers of history and writers of noble books, great villains and great saints. Perhaps, as he meets them inthese pages, the reader will now and again pause to call in mind how Alfred, Rufus, Wykeham, and the rest, all in their time, looked out on the same Itchen valley and the same Twyford Downs, and the thought may lend some glamour even to the dry facts of archaeological research.
