The stunning conclusion to the Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy by New York Times bestselling author, Elizabeth Chadwick. Imprisoned by her husband. Separated from her children. If King Henry II thought these things would push his queen into submission, he was wrong. Emboldened by her experiences as the young Queen of France and determined Queen of England, Eleanor of Aquitaine refuses to give into his tyranny. Freed by his death, she becomes dowager Queen of England. But the competition for land and power that Henry bred among his sons has grown into a dangerous rivalry that Queen Eleanor must contain. Her indomitable spirit will be tested to its limits as she attempts to keep the peace between her warring sons, fend off enemies, and negotiate a magnificent future. Long before Queen Elizabeth, Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most powerful women in the medieval world. Elizabeth Chadwick brings her to vivid life in the conclusion to this powerful trilogy of historical fiction. Book The Medieval Castle in England and Wales

Download or read book The Medieval Castle in England and Wales written by Norman J. G. Pounds and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and pioneering book examines the role of the castle in the Norman conquest of England and in the subsequent administration of the country. The castle is seen primarily as an instrument of peaceful administration which rarely had a garrison and was more often where the sheriff kept his files and employed his secretariat. In most cases the military significance of the castle was minimal, and only a very few ever saw military action. For the first time, the medieval castle in England is seen in a new light which will attract the general reader of history and archaeology as much as the specialist in economic and social history.

[...] Of eighty castles described in full, all but six were carefully inspected, and recorded by my own note-book and my son's photographs. Book Civilians and War in Europe 1618 1815

Download or read book Civilians and War in Europe 1618 1815 written by Erica Charters and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilians and War in Europe 1618–1815 is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary look at the role of civilians in early modern warfare, from the Thirty Years War to the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Drawing on works by scholars in art, literature, history, and political theory, the contributors to this volume explore the continuities and transformations in warfare over the course of two hundred years, examining topics central to civilian and war dynamics, including incarceration, cultures of plunder, billeting, and wartime atrocities, in addition to the larger legal practices and philosophical underpinnings of warfare and its aftermath. Showcasing the complex ways civilians were involved in war—not just as anguished sufferers, but as individuals who fought back, who profited, and who negotiated for their own needs—Civilians and War in Europe probes what it meant to be a civilian in countries deeply involved in conflict.

Book Westminster Part II The Art Architecture and Archaeology of the Royal Palace

Download or read book Westminster Part II The Art Architecture and Archaeology of the Royal Palace written by Warwick Rodwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-27 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Westminster came into existence in the later Anglo-Saxon period, and by the mid-11th century, when Edward the Confessor’s great new abbey was built, it was a major royal centre two miles south-west of the City of London. Within a century or so, it had become the principal seat of government in England, and this series of twenty-eight papers covers new research on the topography, buildings, art-history, architecture and archaeology of Westminster’s two great establishments — Abbey and Palace. Part I begins with studies of the topography of the area, an account of its Roman-period finds and an historiographical overview of the archaeology of the Abbey. Edward the Confessor’s enigmatic church plan is discussed and the evidence for later Romanesque structures is assembled for the first time. Five papers examine aspects of Henry III’s vast new Abbey church and its decoration. A further four cover aspects of the later medieval period, coronation, and Sir George Gilbert Scott’s impact as the Abbey’s greatest Surveyor of the Fabric. A pair of papers examines the development of the northern precinct of the Abbey, around St Margaret’s Church, and the remarkable buildings of Westminster School, created within the remains of the monastery in the 17th and 18th centuries. Part II part deals with the Palace of Westminster and its wider topography between the late 11th century and the devastating fire of 1834 that largely destroyed the medieval palace. William Rufus’s enormous hall and its famous roofs are completely reassessed, and comparisons discussed between this structure and the great hall at Caen. Other essays reconsider Henry III’s palace, St Stephen’s chapel, the king’s great chamber (the ‘Painted Chamber’) and the enigmatic Jewel Tower. The final papers examine the meeting places of Parliament and the living accommodation of the MPs who attended it, the topography of the Palace between the Reformation and the fire of 1834, and the building of the New Palace which is better known today as the Houses of Parliament.

Book The Cult of St Swithun

Download or read book The Cult of St Swithun written by Michael Lapidge and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Swithun was an obscure ninth-century bishop of Winchester about whom little was, and is, known. But following the translation of his relics from a conspicuous tomb into the Old Minster, Winchester, on 15 July 971, the massive rebuilding of the cathedral, and a vigorous publicity campaign byBishop Aethelwold (963-84), St Swithun became one of the most popular and important English saints, whose cult was widespread not only in England but also in Ireland, Scandinavia, and France. The present volume includes new and full editions of all the relevant texts - hagiographical, liturgical, and historical - in Latin, Old English, and Middle English, many of which have never been published before: these illuminate the origins and development of St Swithun's cult. No dossier of an important English saint has been published on this scale until now: the wealth of this volume sheds newlight not only on St Swithun himself, but also on the times during which his cult was at the peak of its popularity.
