In the mid-to-late-nineteenth century, a burgeoning science called electricity promised to shine new light on a rousing nation. Inventive and ambitious minds were hard at work. Soon that spark was fanned, and a fiery war was under way to be the first to light—and run—the world with electricity. Thomas Alva Edison, the inventor of direct current (DC), engaged in a brutal battle with Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse, the inventors of alternating current (AC). There would be no ties in this race—only a winner and a loser. The prize: a nationwide monopoly in electric current. Brimming with action, suspense, and rich historical and biographical information about these brilliant inventors, here is the rousing account of one of the world’s defining scientific competitions. Download or read book Minnesota s Geologist written by Sue Leaf and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 Minnesota Book Award for Minnesota Nonfiction The story of the scientist who first mapped Minnesota’s geology, set against the backdrop of early scientific inquiry in the state At twenty, Newton Horace Winchell declared, “I know nothing about rocks.” At twenty-five, he decided to make them his life’s work. As a young geologist tasked with heading the Minnesota Geological and Natural History Survey, Winchell (1839–1914) charted the prehistory of the region, its era of inland seas, its volcanic activity, and its several ice ages—laying the foundation for the monumental five-volume Geology of Minnesota. Tracing Winchell’s remarkable path from impoverished fifteen-year-old schoolteacher to a leading light of an emerging scientific field, Minnesota’s Geologist also recreates the heady early days of scientific inquiry in Minnesota, a time when one man’s determination and passion for learning could unlock the secrets of the state’s distant past and present landscape. Traveling by horse and cart, by sailboat and birchbark canoe, Winchell and his group surveyed rock outcrops, river valleys, basalt formations on Lake Superior, and the vast Red River Valley. He studied petrology at the Sorbonne in Paris, bringing cutting-edge knowledge to bear on the volcanic rocks of the Arrowhead region. As a founder of the American Geological Society and founding editor of American Geologist, the first journal for professional geologists, Winchell was the driving force behind scientific endeavor in early state history, serving as mentor to many young scientists and presiding over a household—the Winchell House, located on the University of Minnesota’s present-day mall—that was a nexus of intellectual ferment. His life story, told here for the first time, draws an intimate picture of this influential scientist, set against a backdrop of Minnesota’s geological complexity and splendor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Roth's bestselling alternate history—the chilling story of what happens to one family when America elects a charismatic, isolationist president—is soon to be an HBO limited series. In an extraordinary feat of narrative invention, Philip Roth imagines an alternate history where Franklin D. Roosevelt loses the 1940 presidential election to heroic aviator and rabid isolationist Charles A. Lindbergh. Shortly thereafter, Lindbergh negotiates a cordial “understanding” with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism. For one boy growing up in Newark, Lindbergh’s election is the first in a series of ruptures that threaten to destroy his small, safe corner of America–and with it, his mother, his father, and his older brother. "A terrific political novel . . . Sinister, vivid, dreamlike . . . creepily plausible. . . You turn the pages, astonished and frightened.” — The New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: The definitive portrait of one of the most important cultural figures in American history: Walt Disney. Walt Disney was a true visionary whose desire for escape, iron determination and obsessive perfectionism transformed animation from a novelty to an art form, first with Mickey Mouse and then with his feature films–most notably Snow White, Fantasia, and Bambi. In his superb biography, Neal Gabler shows us how, over the course of two decades, Disney revolutionized the entertainment industry. Download or read book Sweet Thunder written by Wil Haygood and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sugar Ray Robinson was one of the most iconic figures in sports and possibly the greatest boxer of all time. His legendary career spanned nearly 26 years, including his titles as the middleweight and welterweight champion of the world and close to 200 professional bouts. This illuminating biography grounds the spectacular story of Robinson's rise to greatness within the context of the fighter's life and times. Born Walker Smith Jr. in 1921, Robinson's early childhood was marked by the seething racial tensions and explosive race riots that infected the Midwest throughout the 1920s and 1930s. After his mother moved their family to Harlem, he came of age in the post-Renaissance years. Recounting his local and national fame, this deeply researched and honest account depicts Robinson as an eccentric and glamorous--yet powerful and controversial--celebrity, athlete, and cultural symbol. From Robinson's gruesome six-bout war with Jake "Raging Bull" LaMotta and his lethal meeting with Jimmy Doyle to his Harlem nightclub years and thwarted showbiz dreams, Haygood brings the champion's story to life.
Download or read book Daily Guidance from God written by Trevor A. Winchell and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32 NKJV). All the devotional writings that are written in this book were given to me from God to write for every person who needs to read them. I truly believe with all my heart that every single word that God gave me to write was given to me to help, inspire, direct, guide, lead, and strengthen people who are facing difficult situations and to serve a specific purpose in their life. In my devotional writings, I might say things that a lot of people don’t agree with, or I might say a lot of things that people don’t like. But the fact of the matter is that every single word I write is given to me by God, not because people want to hear it but because people need to hear it. The truth of God’s Word is undeniable in every way, and only the truth of God’s Word will set you free in the end. So those who want everything sugarcoated to their satisfaction and according to their standards will keep them in denying the truth. As most of you know, I don’t sugarcoat anything, and I don’t tell people what they want to hear. I tell people what they need to hear based on the words God has given me. Is it easy to tell people what they don’t want to hear? Of course not, but when God commands me to write the words he gives me, I must obey him regardless if people are going to like it or not. The truth and only the truth of God’s words will set you free in the end. The devotionals that I write are 70 percent scripture context, 30 percent practical context, and 100 percent inspired by God. They are easy to relate to because a lot people are often dealing with tough circumstances or going through difficult situations. It’s often difficult to interpret and understand the actual meaning of a particular Bible verse. Each devotional that I write includes a Bible verse and a prayer. The Bible verse directly correlates with the devotional so that people can relate to the Bible verse and understand it. The prayer also directly relates to the devotional so that people can say the prayer and ask God for help. I believe that Daily Guidance from God is a great tool that will help people better understand real-life issues they are facing and how God can help them. The devotional will help guide people in a positive and biblical way to seek God. The purpose of Daily Guidance from God is to allow his guidance and direction to help people through their difficult circumstances and situations and to lead them down the correct path. When you allow God to be the center of your life, amazing things will happen that you will not even be able to imagine. Everyone has good days and bad days, but if you look to God for guidance in every situation you face, he will help you and guide you to make the right choices and decisions. I invite you to use this devotional to start your day with the positive words from God. I promise that when you read this devotional when you wake up, every day of your life will be brighter and your attitude will be more positive. My writings each day include three parts: a Bible verse, a devotional, and a prayer. “Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart” (Proverbs 7:3 NKJV).
