Excerpt: ... road which leads to Eothesay by the north side of Barone hill. On the farm of Ballancrach, or Upper Ardroscadale, are the remains of an ancient Hill-fort. It is situated on the top of a rock, projecting from a precipitous bank towards the sea; the walls, of which only the foundations remain, are of dry stone. On the point at St. Ninian's bay, are the ruins of a small chapel dedicated to that saint. The road then passes Stewart-Hall, formerly the seat of the Stewarts of Kilwhinelock, About a mile southward from this are the ruins of Kilmory Castle, (consisting of two or three small towers, ) once the residence of the Jamiesons of Kilmory, crowners of In olden times, Stewart-Hall is said to have been venerated by the superstitious, from its being the repository of certain blessed stones, considered invaluable in curing man and beast, under "the blink o' an ill e'e." The milk of cows, which witches took away, returned freely as ever, when they got a certain drink in which these stones had been boiled. Bute, a family now extinct, at. least in the direct line. Whoever can climb a hill, should mount to the summit of Barone hill; and those accustomed to walk, will find the reward greatly to exceed the exertion. The view is extensive, and Bute lies like a map before you. To the north, are seen Loch Straven, the hills of Cowal, and Toward Castle: to the east, the noble Clyde, the isles of Cumbrae, and the Ayrshire coast: to the south, Arran, with its cloud-capped peaks, and the lovely islet of Inchmarnock: to the west, Lochfyne, and the north entrance to the Kyles. Barone Hill was once the scene of a bloody conflict. In 1334, while Allan Lisle held the governorship of Bute on behalf of Edward Baliol, the Bute-men of their own accord rose en masse...
