Book Celtic Warrior Descendants

Download or read book Celtic Warrior Descendants written by Ebe Chandler McCabe Jr and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celtic Warrior Descendants is a genetic, cultural and political history of an American family. It is typical of the history of many Americans of Scotch-Irish descent, and is applicable to a host of people with many surnames. The book pursues the Celtic history of Ireland and Britain to the Iberian Peninsula, and then to the Middle East and before. It also depicts some significant aspects of our ancestors' world, of Celtic mythology, and of cultural traits passed down by our Celtic and pre-Celtic ancestors. Further, as part of his legacy to his descendants, the author takes issue with some lasting political myths learned during his youth. The book is designed to acquaint the reader with the family's genetic history and with the world and culture of the living family's ancestors. It includes mythic, cultural, and political aspects that extend its applicability to a great number of the descendants of the English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh immigrants who came to America several hundred years ago.

Behind each lie personal stories of exceptional individuals and historical events, all of which have helped shape our lives. The lovers of Anne of Green Gables may be pleasantly surprised by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s long association with the Leaksdale Manse just north of Toronto. From the James Bay lowlands comes an unusual example of ingenuity involving a historic Moose Factory landmark, while the poignant love story involving Florence Nightingale and a local minister is depicted in the attractive stained glass window of a church in Elora. A more recent page of history is captured through the side-by-side relationship of a synagogue and mosque. Throughout, Foundations of Faith will delight the armchair traveller and invite the mobile history buff to explore Ontario.

Book The Strange Odyssey of Poland s National Treasures 1939 1961

Download or read book The Strange Odyssey of Poland s National Treasures 1939 1961 written by Gordon Swoger and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strange Odyssey of Poland’s National Treasures, 1939-1961 tells the story of the Polish national treasures –their evacuation from their homeland under perilous conditions after the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and their subsequent removal to western Europe and then to Canada. At the end of the war two Polish governments, a Communist one in Warsaw and a non-Communist one in London, vied for control of the national treasures. Before long the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, the RCMP, and the Canadian and Quebec governments all became involved in the desperate hide-and-seek confrontation between the two Polish governments. Eventually, in February 1961, the release of the historic treasures was negotiated and they were returned to their native land, twenty-two years after their wartime departure. It was indeed a long voyage home!

Book Ethnic Organizational Dynamics

Download or read book Ethnic Organizational Dynamics written by Henry Radecki and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1980-02-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is the culture of an immigrant group kept alive in a new country? Voluntary organizations play a significant role, according to the author, in preserving the cultural heritage of Poland for Polish immigrants and their descendants in Canada. However, participation in these organizations is declining. The author explains why in this sociological study. The first part of the study describes Polish organizations in Canada between 1860 and 1973. The second part describes field research carried out in Metropolitan Toronto in 1974. Results of the research indicate that Polish organizations continue to contribute to the maintenance of a distinctive Polish culture, but that the long-term survival of these organizations is not assured. The study will be useful to sociologists, students of Polish culture, and those interested in ethnic organizations in general.

Book Migration and Im Mobility

Download or read book Migration and Im Mobility written by Anna Xymena Wieczorek and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her endeavour to overcome the established methodological, conceptual, and empirical dualism of mobility and migration, Anna Xymena Wieczorek develops a "mobilities perspective" by combining migration studies theories with approaches of the mobility studies. With the help of rich empirical data gathered among young adults of Polish heritage in Germany and Canada, Wieczorek conceptualizes three patterns of (im)mobility which illustrate the diversity of immigrants' geographical movements after their initial migration. She thus reveals the different social configurations promoting or hindering the development, maintenance or shifting of each pattern in migrants' biographical trajectories.

Download or read book Creating Kashubia written by Joshua C. Blank and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, over one million Canadians have claimed Polish heritage - a significant population increase since the first group of Poles came from Prussian-occupied Poland and settled in Wilno, Ontario, west of Ottawa in 1858. For over a century, descendants from this community thought of themselves as Polish, but this began to change in the 1980s due to the work of a descendant priest who emphasized the community’s origins in Poland’s Kashubia region. What resulted was the reinvention of ethnicity concurrent with a similar movement in northern Poland. Creating Kashubia chronicles more than one hundred and fifty years of history, identity, and memory and challenges the historiography of migration and settlement in the region. For decades, authors from outside Wilno, as well as community insiders, have written histories without using the other’s stores of knowledge. Joshua Blank combines primary archival material and oral history with national narratives and a rich secondary literature to reimagine the period. He examines the socio-political and religious forces in Prussia, delves into the world of emigrant recruitment, and analyzes the trans-Atlantic voyage. In doing so, Blank challenges old narratives and traces the refashioning of the community’s ethnic identity from Polish to Kashubian. An illuminating study, Creating Kashubia shows how changing identities and the politics of ethnic memory are locally situated yet transnationally influenced.

Book The Polish American Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Polish American Encyclopedia written by James S. Pula and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-12-22 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least nine million Americans trace their roots to Poland, and Polish Americans have contributed greatly to American history and society. During the largest period of immigration to the United States, between 1870 and 1920, more Poles came to the United States than any other national group except Italians. Additional large-scale Polish migration occurred in the wake of World War II and during the period of Solidarity's rise to prominence. This encyclopedia features three types of entries: thematic essays, topical entries, and biographical profiles. The essays synthesize existing work to provide interpretations of, and insight into, important aspects of the Polish American experience. The topical entries discuss in detail specific places, events or organizations such as the Polish National Alliance, Polish American Saturday Schools, and the Latimer Massacre, among others. The biographical entries identify Polish Americans who have made significant contributions at the regional or national level either to the history and culture of the United States, or to the development of American Polonia.

Book Polish American Politics in Chicago 1880 1940

Download or read book Polish American Politics in Chicago 1880 1940 written by Edward R. Kantowicz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1975-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "new immigrants" who came from southern and eastern Europe at the turn of the century have rarely been the subject of detailed scholarly examination. In particular, Poles and other Slavic groups have usually been written about in a filiopietist manner. Edward Kantowicz fills this gap with his incisive work on Poles in Chicago. Kantowicz examines such questions as why Chicago, with the largest Polish population of any city outside of Poland, has never elected a Polish mayor. The author also examines the origins of the heavily Democratic allegiance of Polish voters. Kantowicz demonstrates that Chicago Poles were voting Democratic long before Al Smith, Franklin Roosevelt, or the New Deal. Kantowicz has made extensive use of registration lists and voting records to construct a statistical picture of Polish-American voting behavior in Chicago. He draws on church records and census records to provide a detailed description of Chicago's many Polish neighborhoods. He also has studied the city's Polish-language press as well as the few manuscript collections left by Polish-American politicians. These collections, together with data gleaned from interviews with individuals who were acquainted with these figures, are used to sketch profiles of the political leaders of Polonia's capital. Kantowicz focuses on the goals which the Polish-American community pursued in politics, the issues they deemed important, and the functions which politics served for them. He links this analysis to observations on the homeland and the reasons for which the Poles emigrated. In this context he is able to draw conclusions about the nature of the ethnic politics in general. His work will appeal to a variety of readers: urban and twentieth-century historians, political scientists, and sociologists.
