County was formerly part of Davidson County and was named in Honor of Major-General Griffith Rutherford of Revolutionary fame. County Courts were not organized until January 3, 1804 and Jefferson was the first County seat. Murfreesboro became the permanent County seat in 1811 and the State Capital from 1817 until 1826. Rutherford Count Deed Records began in 1804 with first Deeds recorded during the April Term of the County Court. Only Genealogical information, Names Dates and prior places of residence (where given) has been abstracted from the Deeds. No attempt has been made to interpret or to correct spelling. Searchers should check all names that may sound or look like the names for which they are searching. Should a copy of an entire Deed be desired, it may be obtained for a reasonable fee from the Office of Register, Rutherford County Courthouse, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, In ordering be certain to supply Deed and Book Number and Names of Grantor and Grantee.
