Material relating directly to Smith pertains to his youth and education before coming to Arkansas Territory in 1832, to his Unionist sympathies during the Civil War, to his religious activity, to his literary efforts, and especially to his enforcement and other work as Clark County sheriff and tax collector, 1835-1844. Other material pertains to realty transactions; tax payments and delinquencies; business transactions in and around Arkadelphia; the military service of one of Smith's sons; casualties sustained by the 7th Infantry, 3rd Division in World War I; and other matters.
