Book Willis Historical Reader Based on the Great Events of History from the Creation of Man Till the Present Time Classic Reprint

Download or read book Willis Historical Reader Based on the Great Events of History from the Creation of Man Till the Present Time Classic Reprint written by William Francis Collier and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Willis Historical Reader, Based on the Great Events of History, From the Creation of Man Till the Present Time To give in a series of pictures such a connected view of the Christian Era as may be pleasantly readable and easily remembered, is the aim of this book. Many pupils leave school - some students even leave college - with great gaps in their knowledge of History. There are thousands whose knowledge of Europe between the Fall of Rome and the Reformation is confined to a few misty, floating ideas about Charlemagne, the Crusades, and Ricnzi. This is partly owing to the study of History in schools being confined, in many cases, to the beaten round of Britain, Greece, and Rome; and partly to the fact that most "Outlines of General History" take but a slight hold of the mind. Professing to give in complete detail the History of every land in the world, they arc often, however valuable as books of reference, worse than useless for class purposes. When we, whose minds arc ripe and strong, consider how little of Gibbon or Macaulay, we can remember beyond their very brilliant passages, we shall at once see the folly of expecting young and tender memories to retain more than the Great Events of History. What these Great Events are, the young need to be told, or else their after-reading will be confused and wearisome. It is the earnest hope of the writer, that this book may be numbered among the works which abridge the labor of the learner and sweeten his toil. The Great Events of British History arc not here described, being merely named in the Chronological Tables; because, in the opinion of the writer, this book should be read immediately after the study of our national story. It will then best gain its primary object, serving as a guide and preparation for the reading of special and more detailed histories. Book excerpt: Connie Willis draws upon her understanding of the universalities of human nature to explore the ageless issues of evil, suffering, and the indomitable will of the human spirit. “A tour de force.”—The New York Times Book Review For Kivrin, preparing to travel back in time to study one of the deadliest eras in humanity’s history was as simple as receiving inoculations against the diseases of the fourteenth century and inventing an alibi for a woman traveling alone. For her instructors in the twenty-first century, it meant painstaking calculations and careful monitoring of the rendezvous location where Kivrin would be received. But a crisis strangely linking past and future strands Kivrin in a bygone age as her fellows try desperately to rescue her. In a time of superstition and fear, Kivrin—barely of age herself—finds she has become an unlikely angel of hope during one of history’s darkest hours.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred History of the World, as Displayed in the Creation and Subsequent Events to the Deluge: Attempted to Be Philosophically Considered, in a Series of Letters to a Son If sufficient strength and opportunity should still accompany his remaining life, the Author desires to pursue this important subject, in that series of events and operations, which, after the renewal of mankind, became more immediately connected with their eco nomy, condition, polities and destinies, under the present laws and state of their existence. It is among these we must act, and by their in uences are prin cipally formed but all these are obeying a constant tho invisible sovereignty, which is continually pro ducing, amid every counteraction, a steady but gradual progression and melioration. Few question, now, this result, tho some may differ as to the cause. The operating cause will, however, become more ma nifest to our judgment, if we take the Sacred History of the World into our philosophical consideration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this fascinating and original new book, Sam Willis and James Daybell lead us on a journey of historical discovery that tackles some of the greatest historical themes - from the Tudors to the Second World War, from the Roman Empire to the Victorians - but via entirely unexpected subjects. You will find out here how the history of the beard is connected to the Crimean War; how the history of paperclips is all about the Stasi; how the history of bubbles is all about the French Revolution. And who knew that Heinrich Himmler, Tutankhamun and the history of needlework are linked to napalm and Victorian orphans? Taking the reader on an enthralling and extraordinary journey through thirty different topics that are ingeniously linked together, Histories of the Unexpected not only presents a new way of thinking about the past, but also reveals the everyday world around us as never before."--Publisher's description.

Book The Great Events Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great Events Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Rossiter Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Events, Vol. 3 So vast and wonderful a construction was the Roman world, so different from our own, that we are apt to imagine it as an arrangement far more deliberately planned, far more mechanically complete, than it appeared to its own inhabitants. From a cursory glance, we may carry away wholly mistaken conceptions of its thought and purpose. Thus, for instance, the Roman Republic never assumed the definite design of conquering the world; its people had only the vaguest conception of whither the world might extend. They merely quarrelled with their neighbors, defeated and then annexed them. At almost any time after Hannibal's death, Rome might have marched her legions, practically unopposed, over all the lands within her reach. Yet she permitted a century and a half to elapse ere Pompey asserted her sovereignty over Asia. It was left for Augustus to take the final step, and, by absorbing Egypt, make his country become in name what it had long been in fact, the ruler of the civilized world. Thus, too, we think of Augustus as a kindly despot, supreme, and governed only by his own will. But his compatriots looked on him as simply the chief citizen of their republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Signs of the Times: In a Series of Eight Lectures The Lectures, which the author now ventures to offer to the public, excepting the Sixth, were delivered to his church, during the last winter, in the course of his regular ministrations. They were attended through out by very crowded audiences; and many who sought to hear them, were not able to find seats, and were obliged to retire. The favor with which they were received, and the anxiety expressed by many at a distance to see them, have led to the conclusion, that the publication of them might perhaps contribute to the promotion of truth, and to the awakening of Christians to an appreciation of their responsibilities and their privileges in this eventful day. With the prayer, that the blessing of God may attend them, they are now placed before the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of History: For Children and Youth It cannot be, therefore, that the limited use of history in our schools, is owing to an idea that it is useless. The fact must arise from the want of historical books, written in a style which shall render them both interesting and profitable. Such at least is the conviction of the author of this volume; and believing that a first book of History for general use in our schools is much to be desired, he has undertaken, and now offers to the public, the present volume.
