Book Player Won Lost Records in Baseball

Download or read book Player Won Lost Records in Baseball written by Tom Thress and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball analysts often criticize pitcher win-loss records as a poor measure of pitcher performance, as wins are the product of team performance. Fans criticize WAR (Wins Above Replacement) because it takes in theoretical rather than actual wins. Player won-lost records bridge the gap between these two schools of thought, giving credit to all players for what they do--without credit or blame for teammates' performance--and measuring contributions to actual team wins and losses. The result is a statistic of player value that quantifies all aspects of individual performance, allowing for robust comparisons between players across different positions and different seasons. Using play-by-play data, this book examines players' won-lost records in Major League Baseball from 1930 through 2015.

Book Bushville Wins

Download or read book Bushville Wins written by John Klima and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rip-roaring story of baseball's most unlikely champions, featuring interviews with Henry Aaron, Bob Uecker and other members of the Milwaukee Braves, Bushville Wins! takes you to a time and place baseball and the Heartland will never forget. "Bushville hits the sweet spot of my childhood, the year my family moved to Wisconsin and the Braves won the World Series against the Yankees, a team my Brooklyn-raised dad taught us to hate. Thanks to John Klima for bringing it all back to life with such vivid detail and energetic writing." -- David Maraniss, New York Times bestselling author of Clemente and When Pride Still Mattered In the early 1950s, the New York Yankees were the biggest bullies on the block. They were invincible: they led the New York City baseball dynasty, which for eight consecutive years held an iron grip on the World Series championship. Then the Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953, becoming surprise revolutionaries. Led by visionary owner Lou Perini, the Braves formed a powerful relationship with the Miller Brewing Company and foreshadowed the Dodgers and Giants moving west, sparking continental expansion and the ballpark boom. But the rest of the country wasn't sold. Why would a major league team move to a minor league town? In big cities like New York, Milwaukee was thought to be a podunk train station stop-off where the fans were always drunk and wouldn't know a baseball from a beer. They called Milwaukee Bushville. The Braves were no bushers! Eddie Mathews was a handsome home run hitter with a rugged edge. Warren Spahn was the craftiest pitcher in the business. Lew Burdette was a sharky spitball artist. Taken together, the Braves reveled in the High Life and made Milwaukee famous, while Wisconsin fans showed the rest of the country how to crack a cold one and throw a tailgate party. And in 1954, a solemn and skinny slugger came from Mobile to Milwaukee. Henry Aaron began his march to history. With a cast of screwballs, sluggers and beer swiggers, the Braves proved the guys at the corner bar could do the impossible - topple Casey Stengel's New York baseball dynasty in a World Series for the ages.

Download or read book Not Hockey written by Angie Abdou and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this carefully curated collection of essays, editors Jamie Dopp and Angie Abdou go beyond their first collection, Writing the Body in Motion, to engage with the meaning of sport found in Canadian sport literature. How does “sport” differ from physically risky recreational activities that require strength and skill? Does sport demand that someone win? At what point does a sport become an art? With the aim of prompting reflections on and discussions of the boundaries of sport, contributors explore how literature engages with sport as a metaphor, as a language, and as bodily expression. Instead of a focus on what is often described as Canada’s national pastime, contributors examine sports in Canadian literature that are decidedly not hockey. From skateboarding and parkour to fly fishing and curling, these essays engage with Canadian histories and broader societal understandings through sports on the margin. Interspersed with original reflections by iconic Canadian literary figures such as Steven Heighton, Aritha Van Herk, Thomas Wharton, and Timothy Taylor, this volume is fresh and intriguing and offers new ways of reading the body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Will of the Creator is the story of a serial killer in Philadelphia in the early 1980s. Charley, a Vietnam veteran who was sent home from the war after sustaining a gunshot wound to his head, is a main character. Charley, back in the States, receives brain surgery and is saved. Unfortunately, during his operation, Charley had a stroke. He opens a luncheonette along with his wife. The business fails, and Charley loses his mind. He blames homeless people for his failure and goes on a murderous rampage. The main character of the novel is Augie. He is a Philadelphia-area boxer who had his promising career obstructed by alcohol and drugs. Augie (based on a real boxer) made an unlikely and remarkable comeback in his thirties, going to the top of the charts. Augie got his chance at the title but lost it at the Philadelphia Spectrum. He fought once more and won a narrow decision but didn't look good. He retired and worked selling soft pretzels and water ice from a wooden cart in west Philadelphia just as his Greek immigrant father had. He was in his mid 30's and worked out at a local gym. One day while sparring with a younger boxer he was hit in the head with a jarring left-hook. He collapsed unconscious in the ring. Then, he was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. It was determined that a major blood vessel near his brain had been ruptured. A major surgery was performed and he was saved. However a severe stroke occurred during the operation and Augie came out of it unable to walk or even communicate. Augie learn to walk again first with a cane, then independently. He reads, listens to a lot of talk radio, plays the horses, and seriously follows baseball. He pursues his dream of being a baseball writer and even begins to write a book about his life and remarkable career. Augie learns from his best friend about a series of murders in the city. The victims are vagrants who are all stabbed in a unique way. There are four victims when Augie learns of them. Charley, like Augie, listens to a lot of local talk radio. Augie hears Charley inadvertently say things that link him to the murders. And by the condition of the bodies, which rise to the number of ten over three years, Augie determines that Charley is the killer. The book also tells the story of local and international R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass, who has a car accident and is paralyzed. His story post-accident fits into this theme of faith, rehabilitation, and hope.

Book Sam Henry s Songs of the People

Download or read book Sam Henry s Songs of the People written by Gale Huntington and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Ireland—its graces and shortcomings, triumphs and sorrows—is told by ballads, dirges, and humorous songs of its common people. Music is a direct and powerful expression of Irish folk culture and an aspect of Irish life beloved throughout the rest of the world. Incredibly, the largest single gathering of Irish folk songs had been almost inaccessible because, originally newspaper based, it was available in only three libraries, in Belfast, Dublin, and Washington D.C. Sam Henry's “Songs of the People” makes the music available to a wider audience than the collector ever imagined. Comprising nearly 690 selections, this thoroughly annotated and indexed collection is a treasure for anyone who performs, composes, studies, collects, or simply enjoys folk music. It is valuable as an outstanding record of Irish folk songs before World War II, demonstrating the historical ties between Irish and Southern folk culture and the tremendous Irish influence on American folk music. In addition to the songs themselves and their original commentary, Sam Henry's “Songs of the People” includes a glossary, bibliography, discography, index of titles and first lines, melodic index, index of the original sources of the songs and information about them, geographical index of sources, and three appendixes related to the original song series in the Northern Constitution.
