Book excerpt: Find yourself transported to Williamsburg in the days of the Revolution See the city at war through the eyes of everyday citizens for an exciting new perspective on the historic year of 1776. The latest in the popular "New Look" line of history titles, K.M. Kostyal's 1776: A New Look at Revolutionary Williamsburg combines new scholarship with rare, powerful photographs to take readers behind the scenes at Colonial Williamsburg. Stunning re-enactment photographs of America's "Revolutionary City" brings history vividly to life: The narrative goes beyond the story of the founding fathers to give a close-up look at how the war for independence played out for ordinary citizens such as women, blacksmiths, and enslaved people. Colonial Williamsburg scholars shed fresh light on this vital era in our history with the most recent research and analysis. The book's lively design combines with the compelling photography of modern-day Williamsburg's street theater and historic interpretation to transport readers back to the heyday of colonial times. Scenes from around the city include a milliner forced to pack up shop, children at a play in a courtyard next to soldiers on patrol, and slaves wrenched from family and friends as they leave town with their Loyalist masters. This exciting, innovative book takes a new look at a familiar topic through the lives of the men and women who would claim America for their own and declare themselves its first citizens. Book Revolution and Politics the Legacy of Independence

Download or read book Revolution and Politics the Legacy of Independence written by Hubert H. Humphrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revolution and Politics, the Legacy of Independence: An Address by the Honorable Hubert H. Humphrey, on the Occasion of the Celebration of the Prelude to Independence, at the Eighteenth-Century Capitol, Williamsburg, Virginia, May 31, 1969 This is indeed a beautiful day. No one could stand in this place at this time without feeling the importance of the hour and the occasion. And I am grateful for the invitation to join in celebrating the memory of the great Virginians whose decisions made here almost two centuries ago led the way to American independence. A celebration such as this has a direct bearing on our mental health as a people and as a nation. For in a very real sense a nation, like an individual, can be a victim of amnesia. If it loses the memory of its own past, it can be at a loss to know what it is in the present, and what it wants to be in the future. So, therefore, today, I want to dwell on the relationship between living Americans and a sense of the American past. I am convinced that this matter is of central importance to all other topics now at the focus of American attention. Every generation looks at the world through the prism of its own experiences and the present is always in contest with the past. My own generation was no exception. Book excerpt: Visitors to Colonial Williamsburg will recognize the settings of this fictional history-the Capitol, Governor's Palace, Courthouse, and Raleigh Tavern. Also familiar are the historical characters, Washington, Jefferson, Samuel Adams, and Patrick Henry. At the forefront of the drama are two fictional characters, Kathryn Sheridan, a "prodigiously handsome widow," who arrives in Williamsburg with a secret mission, to spy on the colony's governor. She meets James Leslie, a Boston merchant and militia captain allied with the incendiary Massachusetts Sons of Liberty. He is in Williamsburg to encourage opposition to the Crown. Sheridan and Leslie are drawn to each other, but are repelled by their political differences. She is a staunch loyalist; he is a rebel. Their love-hate relationship is carried, in this blend of history and fiction, through the tumultuous years just before the War for Independence, as Virginians lead the colony to its fateful clash with Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes historic accounts describing the colonial era city *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "That the future may learn from the past." - The motto of Colonial Williamsburg Along with Jamestown and Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg is known today as part of the Historic Triangle of Virginia, but all three of these old Virginian sites are known for vastly different reasons. While Yorktown was the scene of the final climactic battle of the American Revolution and Jamestown is remembered for being the first English settlement to survive in Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg is now best known as a bridge to the past. Williamsburg got its start as a fortified site, which was vitally necessary for English settlers to heavily outnumbered by nearby Native Americans, many of which were at times hostile. Known originally as Middle Plantation, the site served as the capital of the colony for much of the 18th century, and it bore witness to seminal events in the history of Revolutionary era America, including the Gunpowder Incident, which nearly coincided with the Battles of Lexington and Concord to the north. However, once the capital was again moved, Williamsburg lost much of its prominence, and by the end of the 19th century it was best known for hosting the College of William and Mary. As fate would have it, a major initiative during the 20th century would restore Williamsburg to a place of prominence, literally. In one of America's most ambitious building projects, efforts were undertaken to reconstruct the main parts of Colonial Williamsburg and restore it to a more original appearance, whether it was constructing new buildings with the old architecture or renovating colonial buildings. In doing so, Williamsburg was transformed from a sleepy (albeit historic) town into the biggest tourist destination in Virginia, and America's most famous living-history museums. In the 20th century, it was used to teach students about American history and even current events, and naturally, it is now a place full of exhibits and historical reenactments. Put simply, there is no place else in the country that can provide modern Americans with a sense of what life was like in the 17th and 18th centuries better than Colonial Williamsburg, which is what makes it so popular nearly 400 years after it was founded. Colonial Williamsburg: The History of the Settlement that Became America's Most Famous Living-History Museum analyzes the history of Williamsburg and its transformation into Virginia's most visited tourist spot. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Colonial Williamsburg like never before, in no time at all.

Download or read book America before 1787 written by Jon Elster and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original account, drawing on both history and social science, of the causes and consequences of the American Revolution With America before 1787, Jon Elster offers the second volume of a projected trilogy that examines the emergence of constitutional politics in France and America. Here, he explores the increasingly uneasy relations between Britain and its American colonies and the social movements through which the thirteen colonies overcame their seemingly deep internal antagonisms. Elster documents the importance of the radical uncertainty about their opponents that characterized both British and American elites and reveals the often neglected force of enthusiasm, and of emotions more generally, in shaping beliefs and in motivating actions. He provides the first detailed examinations of “divide and rule” as a strategy used on both sides of the Atlantic and of the rise and fall of collective action movements among the Americans. Elster also explains how the gradual undermining in America of the British imperial system took its toll on transatlantic relations and describes how state governments and the American Confederation made crucial institutional decisions that informed and constrained the making of the Constitution. Drawing on a wide range of historical sources and on theories of modern social science, Elster brings together two fields of scholarship in innovative and original ways. The result is a unique synthesis that yields new insights into some of the most important events in modern history.
