Book William Trost Richards

Download or read book William Trost Richards written by Jeffery W. Howe and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first monographic examination of William Trost Richards's (1833-1905) art in Boston, this exhibition explores the artist's career from his earliest sketches and exemplary Pre-Raphaelite technique of the 1860s, to his late masterful seascapes and landscapes. Richards's landscapes in particular come to light within the context of the nineteenth century's burgeoning appreciation for the environment. The exhibition reveals how Richards's works manifest the Romantics' hieroglyphic interpretation of nature, a metaphor embraced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, and reflect nascent scientific discoveries of contemporary geologists who revolutionized understanding of evolution and history. William Trost Richards: Hieroglyphs of Landscape features more than 180 oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sketchbooks, including many seldom-seen works owned by descendants of the artist. Other outstanding contributions come from Bowdoin College Museum of Art; Brooklyn Museum; Davis Museum at Wellesley College; Mark Twain House & Museum; McMullen Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Nantucket Historical Association; Newport Art Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; William Vareika Fine Arts; and many private collectors. An accompanying scholarly catalogue, edited by Jeffery Howe, contains essays by Ethan F. Baxter, Rebecca Bedell, Linda S. Ferber, Howe, and James D. Wallace. The writers probe the artist's background and psychology, illuminating links between his works and the artistic, geologic, and philosophical currents of his era."

Book Indigo

    Book Details:
  • Author : Padgett Powell
  • Publisher : Catapult
  • Release : 2021-11-09
  • ISBN : 1646220056
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Indigo written by Padgett Powell and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection of nonfiction by "one of the few truly important American writers of our time" (Sam Lipsyte). Gathering pieces written during the past three decades, Indigo ranges widely in subject matter and tone, opening with “Cleve Dean,” which takes Padgett Powell to Sweden for the World Armwrestling Federation Championships, through to its closing title piece, which charts Powell’s lifelong fascination with the endangered indigo snake, “a thinking snake,” and his obsession with seeing one in the wild. “Some things in between” include an autobiographical piece about growing up in the segregated and newly integrated South and tributes to writers Powell has known, among them Donald Barthelme, who “changed the aesthetic of short fiction in America for the second half of the twentieth century,” and Peter Taylor, who briefly lived in Gainesville, Florida, where Powell taught for thirty-five years. There are also homages to other admired writers: Flannery O’Connor, “the goddesshead”; Denis Johnson, with his “hard honest comedy”; and William Trevor, whose Collected Stories provides “the most literary bang for the buck in the English world.” A throughline in many of the pieces is the American South—the college teacher who introduced Powell to Faulkner; the city of New Orleans, which “can render the improbable possible”; and the seductions of gumbo, sometimes cooked with squirrel meat. Also here is an elegy for Spode, Powell’s beloved pit bull: “I had a dog not afraid, it gave me great cheer and blustery vicarious happiness.” In addressing the craft of fiction, Powell ventures that “writing is controlled whimsy.” His idiosyncratic playfulness brings this collection to vivid life, while his boundless curiosity and respect for the truth keep it on course. As Pete Dexter writes in his foreword to Indigo, “He is still the best, even if not the best-known, writer of his generation.”
