Book The Great War

Download or read book The Great War written by National Museum Cardiff Staff and published by . This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1917, after three years of hard fighting in the First World War, unprecedented loss of life and increasing hardship at home, the British government were looking for ways of developing public support for the War and generating financial support. This exhibition presents the 66 lithographs from a print portfolio that was commissioned by Wellington House, a government department secretly set up to produce propaganda in 1917. It was the most ambitious print project of the First World War. Eighteen artists contributed to the series, including some of the most celebrated artists of the time. They were published in an edition of 200 by the Fine Art Society and printed under the direction of Ernest Jackson, himself a contributor to the Ideals series. The prints were to be displayed in galleries around Britain and abroad - in France, America and Canada and sold to raise funds for the war effort. Despite good press coverage, the print sales did not meet expectations and the government made a loss on the project as a whole. By showing this work together as a group once again, this exhibition reassesses their significance as images of First World War propaganda and with the passage of time, allows a new audience to view the entire suite of images. The works are split in to two subjects, Ideals and Efforts. The Ideals express the aims and ambitions of the war through use of allegory and symbolism. 12 artists, including Edmund Dulac, Augustus John, Charles Shannon, Charles Ricketts and William Rothenstein, contributed to the Ideals series with subjects such as The Freedom of the Seas, The Reconstruction of Belgium and The Triumph of Democracy. Nine artists, including Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, Eric Kennington, Muirhead Bone and Charles Pears made prints for the Efforts portfolios, each producing six images under a single theme such as Making Soldiers, Making Guns, Building Ships or Work on the Land. These prints offer a fascinating overview of many war activities, including the vital role that many women played. Artistically the works are very different, reflecting the varying trends in British art at the time. Nevinson?s prints are modern, linear and dramatic, Pears' images are detailed and naturalistic, whereas Rothenstein communicates his subject through simple, pared-down images. This exhibition brings together the full set of lithographs for the first time on public display in Wales and is supported by a series of free talks, activities and events.--/www.museumwales.ac.uk.

Book Edwardian Culture

Download or read book Edwardian Culture written by Samuel Shaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwardian Culture: Beyond the Garden Party is the first truly interdisciplinary collection of essays dealing with culture in Britain c.1895-1914. Bringing together essays on literature, art, politics, religion, architecture, marketing, and imperial history, the study highlights the extent to which the culture and politics of Edwardian period were closely intertwined. The book builds upon recent scholarship that seeks to reclaim the term ‘Edwardian’ from prevalent, restrictive usages by venturing beyond the garden party – and the political rally – to uncover some of the terrain that lies between. The essays in the volume – which deal with both famous writers such as J. M. Barrie and Arnold Bennett, as well as many lesser-known figures – draw attention to the nuanced multiplicity of experience and cultural forms that existed during the period, and highlight the ways in which a closer examination of Edwardian culture complicates our definitions of ‘Victorian’ and ‘Modern’. The book argues that the Edwardian era, rather than constituting a coda to the Victorian period or a languid pause before modernism shook things up, possessed a compelling and creative tenor of its own.

Book Ravilious and Co

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andy Friend
  • Publisher : Thames & Hudson
  • Release : 2022
  • ISBN : 9780500296769
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Ravilious and Co written by Andy Friend and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed biography detailing the lives of the British inter-war artists and designers centred on Ravilious - an enthralling narrative of creative achievement, joy and tragedy. In recent years Eric Ravilious has become recognized as one of the most important British artists of the 20th century, whose watercolours and wood engravings capture an essential sense of place and the spirit of mid-century England. What is less appreciated is that he did not work in isolation, but within a much wider network of artists, friends and lovers influenced by Paul Nash's teaching at the Royal College of Art - Edward Bawden, Barnett Freedman, Enid Marx, Tirzah Garwood, Percy Horton, Peggy Angus and Helen Binyon among them. The Ravilious group bridged the gap between fine art and design, and the gentle, locally rooted but spritely character of their work came to be seen as the epitome of contemporary British values. Eighty years after Ravilious's untimely death, Andy Friend tells the story of this group of artists from their student days through to the Second World War. Ravilious & Co. explores how they influenced each other and how a shared experience animated their work, revealing the significance in this pattern of friendship of women artists, whose place within the history of British art has often been neglected. Generously illustrated and drawing on extensive research, and a wealth of newly discovered material, Ravilious & Co. is an enthralling narrative of creative achievement, joy and tragedy.

Book The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad

Download or read book The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad written by Joseph Conrad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the second of the projected eight-volume edition comprising all the surviving letters of Joseph Conrad. Once completed the edition will have assembled over 3,500 letters, one third of them as yet unpublished and many others only published before in inaccurate versions. The period covered by this volume, 1898-1902, was one of considerable achievement and anxiety for Conrad. The birth of his first child, the death of Stephen Crane, the murder of a friend's son, an encounter with an early X-ray machine, imperial wars in Cuba and South Africa - these events forced Conrad to face the problems of identity in terms of family, nation, history, and the cosmic order. This is also the period of 'Youth', 'Amy Foster', 'Typhoon', Lord Jim, and 'Heart of Darkness'. Often funny, always thoughtful, full of verbal energy even in the toils of severe depression, the letters in Volume Two present Conrad at a crucial though vulnerable moment of his life and literary career."--Publisher's description of v. 2
