This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first scholarly biography of Lowndes establishes his place in history, even though he was overshadowed by contemporaries John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay, and provides valuable insights into our understanding of the development and decline of republicanism. Lowndes served in Congress during a time when the rising spirit of democracy challenged the elitist character of republicanism and advanced majority rule, thus raising questions concerning the nature of the Union. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans give little thought to their county's size, population, when it was created, or how its name came about. But such information can be very helpful to anyone, particularly researchers and genealogists, investigating local or state history. Drawing on information obtained from the 2010 Census, the 6th edition of The American Counties provides up-to-date data on each county's: -land area -population -county seat -date of creation -name origin -dates of governmental organization, elimination, and re-creation This edition includes information on counties created since the previous edition was published as well as more precise "date of creation" details for many colonial counties. If a county is named for a geographical feature--river, mountain, lake, etc.--the origin of the name and the meaning of any Indian or foreign words is provided. For those counties that were named after a specific individual, a brief sketch of the person's life is provided, including updated biographical information from previous editions. The Introduction has been expanded to address such topics as counties with similar names, persons who have more than one namesake county, the paucity of counties named for women, the practice of creating counties in uninhabited regions, and legislators naming counties for each other. At the request of many readers, the 6th edition contains new appendices ranking all counties nationally by population and area, as well as an appendix listing counties that have been eliminated. Containing information on all 3,143 counties and county equivalents (independent cities, parishes, boroughs, etc.) in the United States, the 6th edition of The American Counties is an essential resource for researchers looking for basic information on counties in the United States.

Book The Life and Times of Francis Cabot Lowell 1775 1817

Download or read book The Life and Times of Francis Cabot Lowell 1775 1817 written by Chaim M. Rosenberg and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Revolutionary War, despite political independence, the United States still relied on other countries for manufactured goods. Francis Cabot Lowell was one of the principal investors in building the India Wharf and the shops and warehouses close to Boston harbor. His work was instrumental in establishing domestic industry for the United States and brought the Industrial Revolution to the United States. From 1810 to the start of the War of 1812, he traveled through Great Britain, where he saw the tremendous changes caused by the Industrial Revolution, starting with cotton textiles. On his return to the United States he focused on establishing a domestic textile industry to replace imported goods. With his brother-in-law, Patrick Tracy Jackson, he built the Boston Manufacturing Company at Waltham-America's first integrated mill. With his star mechanic, Paul Moody, he developed a power loom and other machines suitable for local conditions. The Life and Times of Francis Cabot Lowell, 1775-1817 tells the story of this amazing man and the great success of the Boston Manufacturing Company, which spurred the American industrial revolution. Francis Cabot Lowell's method-a detailed investment plan, cheap raw materials and power, a motivated labor force, a sound marketing plan, and, above all, modern technology-became the standard for the American factory of the nineteenth century. When Francis Cabot Lowell died, his associates established America's first industrial city, and named it Lowell in his honor.

Book excerpt: Chartered in 1821, Columbus, Mississippi, was originally part of Monroe County. With the signing of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek nine years later, Columbus found itself in the newly formed Lowndes County. The name Columbus was given to the settlement by Silas McBee as early as 1819. Columbus has been a pioneer in many areas: the first public school in Mississippi, Franklin Academy; the first public college for women in the country, Industrial Institute and College (now Mississippi University for Women); and the first celebration of Decoration Day (now Memorial Day). Columbus even served as the state capital in 1865 when Union forces occupied Jackson during the Civil War. Columbus is also the birthplace of several national figures, such as playwright Thomas Lanier "Tennessee" Williams (1911-1983); boxer Henry Jackson Jr., or Henry Armstrong, (1912-1988); Walt Disney artist Joshua Meador (1911-1965); and sports announcer Walter Lanier "Red" Barber (1908-1992).
