Book excerpt: This is a fundamental reassessment of the work of William Holman Hunt, and the first critical text to reproduce his pictures in color and set him on an international stage. Lavishly illustrated and engagingly written, this book answers the longstanding lack of any monograph on Hunt and will make compelling reading for undergraduate and graduate students of History of Art, Victorian Studies, English Literature and Religious Studies, as well as curators, conservators and the artist's many admirers.

Book William Holman Hunt and Typological Symbolism Routledge Revivals

Download or read book William Holman Hunt and Typological Symbolism Routledge Revivals written by George P. Landow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, first published in 1979, Landow contends that Hunt’s version of Pre-Raphaelitism concerned itself primarily with an elaborate system of painterly symbolism rather than with a photographic realism as has been usually supposed. Like Ruskin, Hunt believed that a symbolism based on scriptural typology – the method of finding anticipations of Christ in Hebrew history – could produce an ideal art that would solve the problems of Victorian painting. According to Hunt, this elaborate symbolism could simultaneously avoid the dangers of materialism inherent in a realistic style, the dead conventionalism of academic art, and the sentimentality of much contemporary painting. George Landow examines Hunt’s work in the context of this argument and, drawing on much unknown or previously inaccessible material, shows how he used texts, frames, and symbols to create a complex art of mediation that became increasingly visionary as the artist grew older. This book is ideal for students of art history.

Book Holman Hunt and the Pre Raphaelite Vision

Download or read book Holman Hunt and the Pre Raphaelite Vision written by Katharine Aileen Lochnan and published by Art Gallery of Ontario. This book was released on 2008 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This abundantly illustrated book accompanies a major exhibition of William Holman Hunt's work. It explores the artist's vision and its relevance to contemporary audiences. Despite the great interest in Pre-Raphaelitism, it has been nearly forty years since the last exhibition devoted to Holman Hunt, one of the founders of the movement. His vision, which inspired the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, has lost neither its timeliness or significance." "The book illustrates paintings by Hunt and his associates, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Arthur Hughes, and also includes drawings, prints, photographs and textiles. It examines Hunt's work in the context of the Brotherhood, and his ideas in relation to the artistic, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social issues of his age."--Jacket.

WILLIAM HOLMAN HUNT, AND HIS WORKS. The son of a warehouseman of London, who had passed his life in the Manchester trade, "William Holman Hunt, even from the place of his birth, Wood Street, Cheapside, surrounded as he was by influences of the great English staple, seemed destined to no more enlarged rule of duty in the world than to follow the footsteps of his father, and become, primarily, a clerk in a great manufacturing house. His family, with this prospect for their eldest son, were more urgent that he should be committed to that career, from seeing how persistently he employed his leisure time, while at school, in practising drawing; the examples of, George Morland, and another painter of the same moral and social stamp, being those best known to them, and, consequently, dreaded beyond measure, as the necessary lives of all men who practised painting. Indeed, for some years, until old enough to act alone, their authority u compelled Hunt to that occupation, and the age of sixteen found him an assistant to the London agents of Mr. R. Cobden, then calico-printer of Manchester, subject to those desagremens which beset one who, with a heart and soul given to another pursuit, is compelled to perform tasks his mind is not interested in, while self-confidence urges to a wider flight. Born in April, 1827, 1842 found William Holman Hunt still so placed. Urged by the strong passion of a selfreliant mind, he broke through these family objections, and received, with the reluctant consent of his family, in the evenings of one day in each week, some instructions from a city portraitpainter. Fortunately, at the same time, they allowed him to visit the late John Varley, who, looking kindly over his amateur drawings, encouraged him, perhaps more...

PREFACE HOLMAN HUNT and his work have been more misunderstood and more misrepresented than has been the case with almost any other painter, and it may possibly therefore astonish some readers to learn that it was he who was the originator and leader of Pre-Raphaelitism, and that Rossetti was not a Pre-Raphaelite at all in the originally accepted meaning of the word. That such is an undoubted fact is evident to all who take the pains to investigate the matter for themselves a biography of Holman Hunt would therefore be seriously defective if it failed to trace out the way in which this painter was related to the other members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. It would be equally defective if it omitted to record his motives as an artist, for the life of a great painter is inextricably bound up with his work. And it is all the more important to emphasize this point in these days because the tendency of a certain class of biographers is to dwell persistently upon the trifles of domestic life, especially if they are of a sensational or painful nature, to the exclusion of matters of far greater import with the result that when we have finished their books we know much about the circumstances but little about either the mental develop ment or the inner character of the man or woman whom they have set out to portray...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Holman Hunt was one of the three major artistic talents of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. Hunt’s work was always characterized by great seriousness of purpose, and his paintings include many of the most beautiful and powerful images of that midcentury explosion of creativity. This catalogue raisonée gives him the attention he deserves. The book includes an introduction that assesses Hunt’s life and artistic practice and discusses his aims, philosophy, and religious beliefs, which shed light on his works. While many of his paintings, with their extraordinary effects of light and color, are immediately accessible, his mature works incorporate symbolism that cannot be fully understood without a detailed knowledge of his intentions, and the catalogue entries thoroughly explore this. The volume presents Hunt’s oils and works on paper in two separate sections, and appendixes provide additional information on his illustrated letters, etchings, published illustrations, sculpture, and furniture.
