Book The Works of William Shakespeare

Download or read book The Works of William Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of William Shakespeare: In Reduced Facsimile From the Famous First Folio Edition of 1623 Several instances Heminge and Condell used printed copies of the old quarto editions, in which were certain manuscript alterations, some of the latter being valuable, but others. The reverse. Horne Tooke, indeed, inconsiderately followed by numerous others, goes so far as to say that the First Folio is the only edition worth regarding; adding, it is much to be wished that an edition of Shakespeare were given literatihz according to the First Folio, which is now become so scarce and dear that few persons can obtain it; for, by the presumptuous license of the dwarfish commentators, we risk the loss of Shake speare's genuine text which that Folio assuredly contains, notwithstanding some few slight errors of the press. Horne Tooke was not so well read as were the commentators, none of whom could have exhibited such an entire ignorance of the value of the Quartos. Every one, however, who has really studied the question, must admit that his opinion is correct in regard to no inconsiderable portion of the F olio'volume, and that, even in those cases in which the texts of 'the Quartos are on the whole to be preferred, no student of Shakespeare could possibly dispense with' incessant references to the collective. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merry Wives of Windsor: The Players' d104 of 1602, With the Heminges and Condell d104 of 1623 Two statements referred back to this tradition have been generally conceded without examina tion: first, that Queen Elizabeth ordered William Shakespeare to write a play in fourteen days, for the purpose of showing Falstaff (with whom her majesty had already become acquainted in the two parts of the Henry I V.) in love, and that T/ze Merry Wives of Windsor, as printed in 1623, was the result of that order; and second, that the 1602 quarto is a short-hand transcript of the 1623 ver sion, as surreptitiously captured from the actors' mouths. Book excerpt: The Tempest: A Comedy is a one of the many famous plays written by the well known English playwright, William Shakespeare. A poet, playwright, and actor, Shakespeare is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest writer in the English language. Frequently referred to as England's national poet, Shakespeare crafted thirty eight plays, two long narrative poems, and one hundred and fifty four sonnets in his lifetime. All of his plays, including The Tempest, have been translated into every major language and are consistently performed more often than plays by any other writer in the history of literature. In this play, Shakespeare examines magical elements not often seen in his other works as he crafts a world and characters that manipulate one another via magical means. The play centers around a father and daughter on an island and the father's attempt to ensnare the King Alonso of Naples into a political upheaval and a marriage between their children. While considered a comedy, this play draws heavily on romantic writings and is influenced by the tradition of tragicomedies. Through its use of illusion, manipulation, and the words of characters, this play has consistent reminders that it is just a play, or rather just another illusion of life. This tactic is one of the reasons that this play stands out to those familiar with Shakespeare's work as an interesting interpretation of play writing and the purpose of plays in the theater. The Tempest: A Comedy is a wonderfully executed play by the incomparable playwright, William Shakespeare. This is a wonderful read for individuals interested in Shakespeare and his work along with individuals with a distinct interest in English plays and theater. This book is bound to be exciting for students of drama, teachers of drama and literature, and playwrights wanting to learn from the best playwright known to man. Book excerpt: The first biography of Henry and Emily Folger, who acquired the largest and finest collection of Shakespeare in the world. In Collecting Shakespeare, Stephen H. Grant recounts the American success story of Henry and Emily Folger of Brooklyn, a couple who were devoted to each other, in love with Shakespeare, and bitten by the collecting bug. Shortly after marrying in 1885, the Folgers started buying, cataloging, and storing all manner of items about Shakespeare and his era. Emily earned a master's degree in Shakespeare studies. The frugal couple worked passionately as a tight-knit team during the Gilded Age, financing their hobby with the fortune Henry earned as president of Standard Oil Company of New York, where he was a trusted associate of John D. Rockefeller Sr. While a number of American universities offered to house the collection, the Folgers wanted to give it to the American people. Afraid the price of antiquarian books would soar if their names were revealed, they secretly acquired prime real estate on Capitol Hill near the Library of Congress. They commissioned the design and construction of an elegant building with a reading room, public exhibition hall, and the Elizabethan Theatre. The Folger Shakespeare Library was dedicated on the Bard's birthday, April 23, 1932. The library houses 82 First Folios, 275,000 books, and 60,000 manuscripts. It welcomes more than 100,000 visitors a year and provides professors, scholars, graduate students, and researchers from around the world with access to the collections. It is also a vibrant center in Washington, D.C., for cultural programs, including theater, concerts, lectures, and poetry readings. The library provided Grant with unprecedented access to the primary sources within the Folger vault. He draws on interviews with surviving Folger relatives and visits to 35 related archives in the United States and in Britain to create a portrait of the remarkable couple who ensured that Shakespeare would have a beautiful home in America.

Book Shakespeare in Print

Download or read book Shakespeare in Print written by Andrew Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare in Print is a comprehensive 2003 account of Shakespeare publishing and an indispensable research resource. Andrew Murphy sets out the history of the Shakespeare text from the Renaissance through to the twenty-first century, from the twin perspectives of editing and publishing history. Murphy tackles issues of editorial and textual theory in an accessible and engaging manner. He draws on a wide range of archival materials and attends to topics little explored by previous scholars, such as the importance of Scottish and Irish editions in the eighteenth century, the rise of the educational edition and the history and significance of mass-market editions. The extensive appendix is an invaluable reference tool which provides full publishing details of all single-text Shakespeare editions up to 1709 and all collected editions up to 1821. The listing also provides details of a selected range of major editions beyond these dates to the present day.

Book Shakespeare s Authentic Performance Texts

Download or read book Shakespeare s Authentic Performance Texts written by Graham Watts and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we pick up a copy of a Shakespeare play, we assume that we hold in our hands an original record of his writing. We don't. Present-day printings are an editor's often subjective version of the script. Around 25 percent of any Shakespeare play will have been altered, and this creates an enormous amount of confusion. The only authentic edition of Shakespeare's works is the First Folio, published by his friends and colleagues in 1623. This volume makes the case for printing and staging the plays as set in the First Folio, which preserved actor cues that helped players understand and perform their roles. The practices of modern editors are critiqued. Also included are sections on analyzing and acting the text, how a complex character can be created using the First Folio, and a director's approach to rehearsing Shakespeare with various exercises for both professional and student actors. In conclusion, all of the findings are applied to Measure for Measure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare Select Plays: Hamlet, Prince of Denmark Address could be to Shakespeare, who was their only in his twenty-third year. We now come to something which is undoubtedly connected with Shakespeare. In the Registers of the Stationers' Company is an entry, under the date 26 July 1602, made by James Roberts the printer, of 'a booke, The Revenge of Hamlett prince of Denmarke, as yt Iatelie was acted by the Lord Chamberlayn his servantes.' This is evidently the book which was printed in the following year with this title: 'the Tra gicall Historie of Hamlet Prince of Denmarke, By William Shakespeare. As it hath beene diverse times acted by his Highnesse servants in the Cittie of London: as also in the two Vniversities of Cambridge and Oxford, and else-where. At London printed for N. L. And Iohn Trundell, 160 Coupling the fact of the entry by Roberts with the fact that the quarto of 1604 was 'printed by I. R. For N. L.' that is by James Roberts for Nicholas Ling, we may infer that Roberts also printed the quarto of 1603. When James the First came to the throne 'he accepted the Lord Chamberlain's servants as his own (chalmers, Farther Account of the Early English Stage, in Boswell's Shakespeare, iii. So that the Lord Chamberlayn his servants of the Stationers' Register are the same company with 'his Highnesse servants' of the printed book, and to this company Shakespeare belonged. No evidence has yet been discovered of the occasion on which the play was acted at the two universities; but if we might hazard a conjecture, it seems not improbable that it might have been at some entertainment in honour of the king's accession, and it may have been selected as being connected with the native country of his queen. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare, Bacon and the Great Unknown By Andrew Lang Cuthbert Burbage, in 1635 or 1636, did not remind the Earl of what the Earl knew very well, that the Folio had been dedicated, in 1623, to him and his brother, by Will's friends, Heminge and Condell, as they had been patrons of the late William Shakspere and admirers of his plays. The terms of this dedication are to be cited in the text, later. We all now would have reminded the Earl of what he very well knew. Cuthbert did not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Story of Hamlet and Ophelia We readily perceive that these are the character istics that Shakespeare's young prince displays, and we shall be forced to admit that Shakespeare took Hamblet exactly as he found him, and carried him from the sixth century to the seventeenth, modify ing only the manifestations of his pretended mad ness to make them pleasing to the age in which he placed him. We must also allow that he repre sented all the other personages whom he took from the Hystorie exactly as they are represented there, that is, as to their characters and possibilities of action.
