Download or read book Encyclopedia of Early Modern Philosophy and the Sciences written by Dana Jalobeanu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-27 with total page 2267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia offers a fresh, integrated and creative perspective on the formation and foundations of philosophy and science in European modernity. Combining careful contextual reconstruction with arguments from traditional philosophy, the book examines methodological dimensions, breaks down traditional oppositions such as rationalism vs. empiricism, calls attention to gender issues, to ‘insiders and outsiders’, minor figures in philosophy, and underground movements, among many other topics. In addition, and in line with important recent transformations in the fields of history of science and early modern philosophy, the volume recognizes the specificity and significance of early modern science and discusses important developments including issues of historiography (such as historical epistemology), the interplay between the material culture and modes of knowledge, expert knowledge and craft knowledge. This book stands at the crossroads of different disciplines and combines their approaches – particularly the history of science, the history of philosophy, contemporary philosophy of science, and intellectual and cultural history. It brings together over 100 philosophers, historians of science, historians of mathematics, and medicine offering a comprehensive view of early modern philosophy and the sciences. It combines and discusses recent results from two very active fields: early modern philosophy and the history of (early modern) science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Gilbert of Colchester, Physician of London: On the Loadstone and Magnetic Bodies, and on the Great Magnet the Earth; A New Physiology, Demonstrated With Many Arguments and Experiments England's great poet, john Dryden, tells us: It is almost impossible to translate verbally and well at the same time; for the Latin (a most severe and compendious language) often expresses that in one word which either the barbarity or the narrowness of modern tongues cannot supply in more. But since every language is so full of its own proprieties that what is beautiful in one is often barbarous, nay, sometimes nonsense, in another, it would be unreasonable to limit a translator to the narrow compass of his author's words; it is enough if he choose out some expression which does not vitiate the sense. While, in order to do this acceptably in the present instance, it has often been found necessary to adhere very closely (even literally) to the original lines, the candid reader will naturally observe that greater satisfaction has been vouchsafed where paraphrasing has been resorted to for the better comprehension, more particularly, of words of Gilbert's own coinage. Download or read book On The Magnet written by William Gilbert and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 'On The Magnet' is a new improved English translation of the widely censored or banned Latin 1600 'De Magnete' by William Gilbert which was the first real science book to be published. This version is rather easier to read than its two earlier translations, and significantly helps to clarify Gilbert's 'attraction' physics which Newton put as one of two basic valid mathematized physics options and which he is believed to have privately favoured. It is basically a novel signal-response or remote-control physics that may still have real relevance today.
