Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Cobbett In one sense, of course, Cobbett has never been neglected. He has only been admired in the way in which he would have specially hated to be admired. He who was full of his subject has been valued only for his style. He who was so stuffed with matter has been admired for his manner; though not perhaps for his manners. He shouted to the uproarious many, and his voice in a faint whisper has reached the refined few; who delicately applauded a turn of diction or a flight of syntax. But if such applause be rather. It was Cole, not Engels, who made the transition to a more mature view, dividing his energies, after 1844, between a radical new empiricism and an iconic transcendentalism that, together, implied an abandonment of the pseudoclassic Arcadia of adolescence."--Jacket.

Book William Cobbett

Download or read book William Cobbett written by E. I. Carlyle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Cobbett: A Study of His Life as Shown in His Writings The object of this work, as has been set forth in the title, is to portray the life and character of William Cobbett, with the assistance chiefly of the materials to be found in his writings. Besides writing several fragmentary autobiographies, Cobbett had the habit of illustrating his disquisitions on politics, on finance, or on agriculture, with personal references and reminiscences which, collected together, would fill several volumes. These autobiographical treasures are to be found in all of his works, though not everywhere in equal abundance. Moreover, they are usually sudden excursions with little in the context to indicate their presence to the seeker. His Political Register, for instance, is particularly rich in references to his past life, but in order to discover them it is necessary to examine more than seventy volumes page by page. As much the same process is necessary in regard to his other works the task is one of some magnitude, for Cobbett was probably the most prolific writer whom England has known, with the exception of Defoe. Perhaps the number of Cobbett's writings, in addition to the ephemeral interest of many of them, is a reason why they are now so little read. Book Law and Medicine in Revolutionary America

Download or read book Law and Medicine in Revolutionary America written by Linda S. Myrsiades and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law and Medicine in Revolutionary America: Dissecting the Rush v. Cobbett Trial, 1799 offers the first deep analysis of the most important libel trial in post-revolutionary America and an approach to understanding a much-studied revolutionary figure, Benjamin Rush, in a new light as a legal subject. This libel trial faced off the new nation's most prestigious physician-patriot, Benjamin Rush, against its most popular journalist, William Cobbett, the editor of Porcupine's Gazette. Studied by means of a rare and substantial surviving transcript, the trial features six litigating counsel whose narrative of events and roles provides a unique view of how the revolutionary generation saw itself and the legacy it wished to leave to its progeny. The trial is structured by assaults against medical bleeding and its premier practitioner in yellow fever epidemics of the 1790s in Philadelphia, on the one hand, and castigates the licentiousness of the press in the nation's then-capital city, on the other. As it does so, it exemplifies the much-derided litigiousness of the new nation and the threat of sedition that characterized the development of political parties and the partisan press in late eighteenth-century America.
