Download or read book Blake Books Supplement written by Gerald Eades Bentley and published by Oxford [England] : Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blake Books Supplement is a continuation of Blake Books (1977), a bibliographical record of publications covering all aspects of William Blake's life and work - his writings, drawings, and engravings - and works of criticism on them. Most of the information in the Supplement was published inthe period 1972-1992, but there are items newly recorded here which appeared as early as the 1790s. The mass of new material is enormous - the last 20 years have produced almost as many items for inclusion as the preceding 200 years covered in the original Blake Books. Some of the most important discoveries concern newly identified writings and engravings by Blake himself. The work is organizedlike Blake Books, enabling the two volumes to be used side by side.

Download or read book Blake as an Artist written by David Bindman and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have attempted to approach the Illuminated Books from an art-historical point of view, a task which would have been impossible if the general consensus upon their meaning had not been established in the last few years, primarily by literary scholars. I am now convinced that Blake's mythology can be made sufficiently comprehensible to allow one to discuss his subject matter in a way comparable to that of any other artist of the past, but I am also aware that many scholars regard the Illuminated Books as more complex in thought than I do. It is clear to me that the Illuminated Books are not a self-contained aspect of Blake's work, but contribute directly to the understanding of the seemingly more conventional designs for the Bible, for Milton and for other writers. A central assumption of this book is that there is a fundamental unity between Blake's art and his writing, but my focus has still been predominantly upon the art, and I have made literary judgments only when they affect the argument. - Introduction.
Download or read book Reading Blake s Designs written by Christopher Heppner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative study, Christopher Heppner constructs a new assessment and interpretation of William Blake as an illustrator of texts that were not his own. Ranging over topics such as Blake's depiction of human figures, his handling of gesture and perspective, and the relationship with Michelangelo, Heppner considers how they are brought to bear on the 1795 color prints, the illustrations to Young's Night Thoughts and to the Bible. A large number of illustrations, including color plates, illuminates this new interpretation of a complex artist.

Download or read book The Blessed Damozel written by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-09-25 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante Gabriel Rossetti, English poet, illustrator, painter and translator, founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Rossetti was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rossetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats. His later poetry was characterised by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling, especially in his sonnet sequence, The House of Life. Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his pictures, spanning from The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Astarte Syriaca (1877), while also creating art to illustrate poems such as "Goblin Market" by the celebrated poet Christina Rossetti, his sister.
