Book Seed Annual 1900 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Seed Annual 1900 Classic Reprint written by D. M. Ferry And Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seed Annual, 1900 It produces shoots which are white and remain so as long as fit for use and from 80 to 90 per cent. Of the plants come true from seed. This grand result has not come by chance, but is the legitimate outcome of years of patient work and careful selection by the originator, extending over eight generations from the original plant. Some fourteen years ago a single plant having white shoots was found growing in a large Asparagus grower's field of Conover's Colossal. As the plant happened to be seed bearing, seeds were saved and sown by them selves. A small percentage of the plants came true and these were planted by them selves and seed from them saved. This process was repeated until now fully 80 to 90 per cent. Of the plants produced from the seed we offer will be white. The small percentage of green plants that show in a lot of seedlings may be removed as fast as they appear, thus insuring a bed containing white plants only. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree, Shrub and Fruit Seeds: Autumn, 1915 Spring, 1916 We cover the largest seed growing districts in the world, and with our experienced collectors, we are in a position to furnish you the best quality of seeds in the largest of varieties and quantities at the most reasonable prices. We do our best to send out sound and perfect seeds, but in the case of oaks, hickories and chestnuts the seeds are sometimes wormy, a defect that cannot be detected until the worm eats its way out, often after the seeds leave our hands. There are trees, too, that never perfect all their seeds - the Acer saccharum and Liriodendron are examples - and there is no way to separate the imperfect seeds. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book The Sibley Guide to Trees

Download or read book The Sibley Guide to Trees written by David Allen Sibley and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive field guide to the trees of North America, featuring maps, detailed illustrations, and information on more than 600 species of trees, from the preeminent, bestselling author and illustrator “A beautiful, masterful, and much-needed work that will henceforth be our guide to the North American trees.”—Edward O. Wilson The Sibley Guide to Trees is an astonishingly elegant guide to a complex subject. It condenses a huge amount of information about tree identification—more than has ever been collected in a single book—into a logical, accessible, easy-to-use format. With more than 4,100 meticulous, exquisitely detailed paintings, the Guide highlights the often subtle similarities and distinctions between more than 600 tree species—native trees as well as many introduced species. More than 500 maps show the complete range, both natural and cultivated, for nearly all species. No other guide has ever made field identification so clear. Highlighted features include: • leaves (including multiple leaf shapes and fall leaf color) • bark • needles • cones • flowers • fruit • twigs • silhouettes Trees are arranged taxonomically, with all related species grouped together. By focusing on the fundamental characteristics of, for example, oaks or chestnuts or hickories, the Guide helps the user recognize these basic species groups the same way birders recognize thrushes, warblers, or sparrows. In addition, there are essays on taxonomy, on the cultivation of trees, and on conservation issues, reflecting Sibley’s deep concern with habitat preservation and environmental health. An important contribution to our understanding of the natural world, The Sibley Guide to Trees is a necessity for every tree lover, traveler, and naturalist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on thousands of years of foodways, Tucson cuisine blends the influences of Indigenous, Mexican, mission-era Mediterranean, and ranch-style cowboy food traditions. This book offers a food pilgrimage, where stories and recipes demonstrate why the desert city of Tucson became American’s first UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Both family supper tables and the city’s trendiest restaurants feature native desert plants and innovative dishes incorporating ancient agricultural staples. Award-winning writer Carolyn Niethammer deliciously shows how the Sonoran Desert’s first farmers grew tasty crops that continue to influence Tucson menus and how the arrival of Roman Catholic missionaries, Spanish soldiers, and Chinese farmers influenced what Tucsonans ate. White Sonora wheat, tepary beans, and criollo cattle steaks make Tucson’s cuisine unique. In A Desert Feast, you’ll see pictures of kids learning to grow food at school, and you’ll meet the farmers, small-scale food entrepreneurs, and chefs who are dedicated to growing and using heritage foods. It’s fair to say, “Tucson tastes like nowhere else.”
