Book excerpt: WILL ROGERS 1879-1935 The consideration of Will Rogers as a candidate for President of the United States in 1928 was more of a symbolic gesture acknowledging his spirit, insight and honesty. Will had the ability to accurately interpret the political and economic events of the day; events which in many ways relate to our own upcoming elections. His humor with an occasional sarcastic remark thrown in, kept folk's attention giving them a reason to stay informed. Will Rogers had a remarkable career that went from Oklahoma "cowpuncher" to international star. He embodied the heart and soul of this nation at a time when a fresh voice, clear eyes and spoken truth were needed. This simple plain-spoken man who was part Cherokee Indian and a former cowboy became the voice of a nation during the '20s and '30s. His writings, quotes and speaking engagements were directed toward the political arena, as well as other events of the time. Strange as it seems, most of those pearls of wisdom are just as relevant today as they were in Will's day. It is my intent to give you folks a point of reference that may apply to some political happening today as well as a useable quote you may toss out to liven up a conversation or speech. Will liked people and never forgot his roots. He was able to connect with folks in a way most politicians, heads of states and those in high places could not. In many cases, politicians were more interested in their own AGENDA instead of the people who helped get them elected. Some things haven't changed and it seems as if certain principles are embedded in our political system for all times. Through his message and style of delivery, he conveyed to the entire nation what was really going on in the heart of the country. As a result of ability to connect with people, his compassion for values and principles, Rogers was accepted, respected, trusted and honored throughout the world from the common man to royalty. The intent of this booklet is to present in an interview format a quick read and reference. Will's timeless philosophy, as well as insights into political life from yesteryear presented as they apply to today's events. These golden nuggets and guiding thoughts will be something you can relate to, learn from as well as sharing with others, possibly opening up certain areas for cussing or discussing. The topics covered are introduced by a question then answered with one of Candidate Rogers' insightful Thoughts, Quotes & Anecdotes in understandable terms and concepts that make sense, common sense. Enjoy the timeless sayings and expressions of Will Rogers presented in this booklet. My goal is to put a smile on your face, possibly some insight into the ever changing and in many ways, never changing world of Elections & Politics.

Book excerpt: Rogers' observations are as stingingly accurate in our post-modern world as they were in the 1920s and '30s. He has inspired two one-man shows and a five-year Broadway hit that is still #1 at the box office because of his humor, compassion and intimate understanding that current events are the logical result of the human condition.

Book Will Rogers

Download or read book Will Rogers written by Betty Rogers and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many books written about Will Rogers, none can have the immediacy, firsthand knowledge, and personal perspective of this account by his wife, Betty Blake Rogers. Her story is of Will Rogers, from wayward youth to international celebrity. Will was born in 1879 in the Cherokee nation of Indian Territory, near what is now Oologah, and died in 1935 with Wiley Post in an airplane crash in Alaska. The period witnessed the passing of the frontier and the arrival of the air age, and Will Rogers became a unique part and interpreter of it all. "The book offers a ’unique insight’ into the Oklahoma cowboy who became a worldwide celebrity. Betty Rogers understood Will as no one else could, and her book amplifies the importance of a homegrown philosopher who captured the spirit of the American experience. Cowboy, showman, homespun pundit-Will left his mark in many ways, each of which is carefully developed in the book’s twenty-two chapters. Most notable, however, is Mrs. Rogers’s treatment of her husband’s character. Behind the facade lay a complex man who, despite his lack of formal education, had a grasp of modern psychology and world politics. Equally at home with cowboys and presidents, Will accepted both as human beings engaged in the larger arena of life, whether in the wide open spaces of Oklahoma or the confines of Washington....For those who would know Will Rogers in a familiar way, there is no better book than this reprint." Arizona and the West. "The best of all the books on the best of all the homespun philosophers as seen through the eyes of his wife." Midwest Book Review. "Folksy, detailed and loving, it offers a timeless glimpse at a real American hero of his time-and ours." American Way.

Book Will Rogers

Download or read book Will Rogers written by Richard D. White Jr and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was the top male box office attraction at the movies, one of the most widely read newspaper columnists in America, a radio commentator with an audience of more than 60 million, and a globetrotting speaker who filled lecture halls across the land. But how did humorist Will Rogers also become one of the most powerful political figures of his day? From just before World War I, through the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, Rogers provided a refreshing yet sobering appraisal of current events and public policy. Through him, millions formed their opinion of President Wilson's quest for a League of Nations, debated freedom of speech and religion during the Scopes Monkey Trial, questioned the success of several disarmament conferences, took pity upon the sufferers of the Great Flood of 1927, and tried to grasp the awful reality of the Great Depression. Rogers visited Washington often to attend congressional sessions and official receptions, testify at hearings, meet with cabinet officers, and speak at the exclusive Gridiron and Alfalfa Clubs. His open access to the Oval Office, the Senate cloakroom, and other inner sancta of national power was unmatched for someone not holding public office. In this groundbreaking biography Richard D. White argues that the nation's most popular entertainer was not only an incisive political commentator but also a significant influence upon national leaders and their decisions. When Will Rogers perished in a plane crash in Alaska in 1935, Americans lost their most popular and beloved humorist, a man who put smiles on their faces, took their minds off war and depression and, for a moment, allowed them to laugh at his cracker-barrel humor and ultimately themselves. But Americans also lost their most trusted source of reason, a man who, more than any other, broke down the complex issues of the day and gave them a critically honest appraisal of American politics and world affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most famous and funniest observers of people and events was Will Rogers, a country boy known for his keen and witty views of the ridiculous, bumbling antics of national leaders. Although Will Rogers died in 1935, his penetrating comments are just as fresh and to the point as they were nearly one hundred years ago. In Will Rogers Views the News, seasoned newsman Robert Waldrop applies Will Rogerss brand of shrewd insight and quick wit to todays unpredictable and oft en humorous news events. Will Rogers loved political figures, especially United States presidents. He teased the candidates during their campaigns and lampooned those who succeeded in being elected. While considering Rogerss past comments about the economy, the president, and Congress in light of the current political climate in America, Waldrop reinforces that if not for the doubletalk, answer dodging, and lack of focus of our elected leaders, humorists would have nothing to talk about. From Democrats and Republicans to Wall Street and lobbyists to war and the military, Waldrop channels Rogerss humor and applies it to modern day through his Telegrams, newspaper articles, and books. Will Rogers Views the News shares a past humorists timeless way of looking at people and events that still encourages others to learn to laugh at themselves, our leaders, and the unpredictable world we live in.
