Ultimately, it shows that Humboldt’s ideals are not timeless – they are historical phenomena and have always been determined by the predicaments and issues of the day. Nevertheless, many of the key concepts and fundamental ideas have endured throughout the twentieth century, though they have been interpreted in different ways.

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird aber nicht die Rezeptionsgeschichte Humboldts, sondern der historische Charakter seiner Person im Zentrum stehen. Hierbei kommt es mir vor allem darauf an, das Thema "Humboldt und Bildung" in erster Linie mit Hilfe seiner Gesammelten Werke zu bearbeiten und das Ursprüngliche seiner schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit hervorzuheben.
