Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing quite like the thrill and awe of seeing a tiger in the wild, or hearing the rutting call of a Barasingha stag and the alarm call of a Spotted deer in its natural habitat. The tiger is India’s iconic national animal, and Madhya Pradesh is virtually a ‘tigerland’. Places like Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura and the nearby forests are home to the bulk of the population of tigers, their co-predators, prey and habitat of Central India. The state has a diversity of life forms owing to its rich, unique geographical and climatic attributes. The large number of protected areas in the state highlights the concern and efforts of the state government to conserve and protect its floral and faunal heritage. Land of the Striped Stalker: Wildlife of Madhya Pradesh presents a broad picture of the prominent tiger reserves, protected areas and flora and fauna of Madhya Pradesh. The information provided in this book will not only help visitors plan their trips to the protected areas and tiger reserves of Madhya Pradesh, but will also foster awareness about the ecological imperatives to protect the wildlife of the region.

Book Global Change and Protected Areas

Download or read book Global Change and Protected Areas written by Guido Visconti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High mountains can be considered as particularly appropriate environments to detect effects ofclimate change on natural biocoenoses in a global scale for the following reasons: Firstly, ecosystems at the l- temperature limits of plant life are generally thought to be especially sensitive to climate change [1][2][3]. An already ongoing upward shift of vascular plants at high summits in the Alps, determined by the Austrian IGBP-research [4][5][6][7][8], is most likely a response to the atmospheric warming since the 19th century. Secondly, high mountains still comprise the most natural ecosystems in many countries, being largely untouched by human settlements and agricultural influences, Therefore, climatic effects on ecosystems can be studied without masking effects from human land use. Thirdly, high mountain ranges are present in virtually every major zonobiome of the earth. The research initiative GLORIA aims to establish an urgently needed global monitoring network, by using high mountain ecosystems as sensitive indicators, as required in the “IGBP-Mountain Workplan” [9]. Moreover, a deeper understanding of assemblagemechanisms andassemblage processes in vegetation patterns as a contribution to ecological theory can be expected. This paper gives a short general overview about GLORIA and a first outline about the concept, method, and some few results of the “Multi Summit-Approach”, one of the basic intentions within the proposed network. It aims to encourage the involvement of high mountain researchers and research co-ordinators in a detailed discussion of the proposed research activities and in a co-operation within the planned global monitoring network.

Book Performance of Public and Private Mining Firms in India

Download or read book Performance of Public and Private Mining Firms in India written by Amarendra Das and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines three important research questions against the backdrop of increasing private sector participation in the Indian mining industry. The questions are: i) are private sector mining firms more productive than public sector mining firms? ii) do public sector mining firms comply with environmental regulations better than their private counterparts? and iii) do public sector mining firms perform better in social compliance than the private mining firms? Using firm level data from 1988–89 to 2005–06, the author finds that Total Factor Productivity (TFP) levels of private mining firms are significantly higher than those of public sector firms in three sectors – metallic, non-metallic and coal. In the petroleum sector, private sector firms outperformed the public sector firms in the initial years, while later on, the productivity of public sector firms exceeded that of private firms in a few years. The book examines the environmental performance of public and private mining firms in the context of Indian chromite mining industry using four indicators: namely, overburden management, air pollution, the quality of mine drainage water after treatment, and the quality of ground water. The author constructs a multidimensional environmental defiance index for comparing the aggregate environmental performance across ownership groups and does not find significant differences between the environmental performance of public and private mining firms. Both public and private mining firms have failed to comply with the environmental regulations. The author compares the social compliance of public- and private-sector mining firms by conducting a survey of households who have surrendered their land to the mining firms. It is found that the majority of households were dissatisfied with the compensation paid by both public and private sector mining firms. Furthermore, it is observed that there is no significant difference between the compensations provided by the public and private sector mining firms.
