Book Wildlife hazards at Airports Wildlife and the Aviation Industry in Ethiopia

Download or read book Wildlife hazards at Airports Wildlife and the Aviation Industry in Ethiopia written by Fekadu Assefa and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 3.71, Addis Ababa University (Developmental studies), course: Disaster and risk management, language: English, abstract: The study aimed to assess the effects of wildlife hazards at Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Monitoring wildlife numbers and other wild animals, activity pattern and abundance within the study area generates a complimentary source of data, which is more suited for developing efficient hazard management mechanisms. Different wildlife’s commonly causes damage to aviation industry around the world. The study findings recorded about 70 species of wildlife including plants during the study period. The study results illustrated that some of the wildlife animals either living in or visiting the airport have often caused threats to aircraft operation in the airport directly or indirectly. Only between 2014 and 2018, 416 strikes were reported at the airport. The total amount of cost due to wildlife strike for the last six years was estimated at 4, 768,310.00 USD. Thus, it is recommended that Addis Ababa Bole International Airport should establish proactive systematic approach to deal with wildlife hazard than reactive or traditional approach.

Book Wildlife Strikes to Civil Aircraft in the United States 1990 2012

Download or read book Wildlife Strikes to Civil Aircraft in the United States 1990 2012 written by U.s. Department of Agriculture and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, the FAA and USDA continued to make great progress with its multifaceted approach for mitigating wildlife strikes. The FAA ensured that 100 percent of Part 139 airports have completed a Wildlife Hazard Assessment (WHA), are in the process of conducting a WHA, or have taken a Federal grant to conduct a WHA. Strike reporting continued to increase, especially with General Aviation (GA) aircraft, which increased strike reporting by 11 percent between 2011 and 2012. The FAA implemented three performance metrics to monitor strike reporting trends and GA wildlife mitigation. The performance metrics include percentage of damaging strikes, strike reporting rates, and tracking of General Aviation (GA) airports that conduct WHAs and site visits. We also issued a final Advisory Circular (AC) on strike reporting and draft ACs on WHA methodology and requirements for federally obligated public airports to conduct WHAs.

Book Bird Strike

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael N. Kalafatas
  • Publisher : Brandeis University Press
  • Release : 2015-02-02
  • ISBN : 1611688159
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book Bird Strike written by Michael N. Kalafatas and published by Brandeis University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a warm and golden afternoon, October 4, 1960, a Lockheed Electra jet turboprop carrying 72 souls took off from Logan Airport. Seconds later, the plane slammed into a flock of 10,000 starlings, and abruptly plummeted into Winthrop Harbor. The collision took 62 lives and gave rise to the largest rescue mobilization in Boston's history, which included civilians in addition to police, firefighters, skindivers, and Navy and Coast Guard air-sea rescue teams. Largely because of the quick action and good seamanship of Winthrop citizens, many of them boys in small boats, ten passengers survived what the Civil Aeronautics Board termed "a non-survivable crash." Using firsthand interviews with survivors of the crash, rescuers, divers, aeronautics experts, and ornithologists, as well as a wide range of primary source material, Kalafatas foregrounds the story of the crash and its aftermath to anchor a broader inquiry into developments in the aeronautics industry, the increase in the number of big birds in the skies of North America, and the increasing danger of "bird strikes." Along the way he looks into interesting historical sidelights such as the creation of Logan Airport, the transformation of Boston's industrial base to new technologies, and the nature of journalistic investigations in the early 1960s. The book is a rare instance when an author can simultaneously write about a fascinating historical event and a clear and present danger today. Kalafatas calls for and itemizes solutions that protect both birds and the traveling public.

Book Wildlife Hazard Management at Airports

Download or read book Wildlife Hazard Management at Airports written by Edward C. Cleary and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is designed to inform airport personnel about the scope of the wildlife strike problem and to serve as a ready reference on legal authority, regulations, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of Wildlife Hazard Management Plans for airports. Although the economic costs of wildlife strikes are extreme, the cost in human lives lost when aircraft crash as a result of strikes best illustrates the need for management of the wildlife strike problem. Birds are not the only wildlife problem for aircraft. Deer, coyotes, and even alligators wandering onto runways can create serious problems for departing and landing aircraft.

Book Bird Strike in Aviation

Download or read book Bird Strike in Aviation written by Ahmed F. El-Sayed and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundbreaking Handbook Offers Detailed Research and Valuable Methodology to Address Dangerous and Costly Aviation Hazard Though annual damages from bird and bat collisions with aircraft have been estimated at $400 million in the United States and up to $1.2 billion in commercial aviation worldwide and despite numerous conferences and councils dedicated to the issue, very little has been published on this expensive and sometimes-lethal flying risk. Bird Strike in Aviation seeks to fill this gap, providing a comprehensive guide to preventing and minimizing damage caused by bird strike on aircraft. Based on a thorough and comprehensive examination of the subject, Dr. El-Sayed offers different approaches to reducing bird strikes, including detailed coverage of the three categories necessary for such reduction, namely, awareness/education, bird management (active and passive control), and aircraft design. In addition, the text discusses the importance of cooperation between airplanes, airports and air traffic authorities as well as testing methods necessary for certification of both aircraft frame and engine. Other notable features include: Statistics and analyses for bird strikes with both civil and military helicopters as well as military fixed wing aircrafts, including annual costs, critical flight altitudes, critical parts of aircraft, distance from air base and specifics of date and timing Thorough review and analysis all fatal bird strike accidents and most non-fatal accidents since 1905, the first book to provide such a reference The use of numerical methods in analyzing historic data (ex. probability functions, finite element methods for analyzing impact on aircraft structure, experimental measurement technique for displacement, vibration, component distortion, etc.) Instruction on identification of bird species (using visual, microscopic, and DNA evidence) and details of bird migration to aid air traffic control in avoiding scenarios likely to result in collision With its wealth of statistical data, innovative research, and practical suggestions, Bird Strike in Aviation will prove a vital resource for researchers, engineers and graduate students in aerospace engineering/manufacturing or ornithology, as well as for military and civilian pilots and flight crew or professionals in aviation authorities and air traffic control.
