Book Rewilding North America

Download or read book Rewilding North America written by Dave Foreman and published by . This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rewilding North America, Dave Foreman takes on arguably the biggest ecological threat of our time: the global extinction crisis. He not only explains the problem in clear and powerful terms, but also offers a bold, hopeful, scientifically credible, and practically achievable solution. Foreman begins by setting out the specific evidence that a mass extinction is happening and analyzes how humans are causing it. Adapting Aldo Leopold's idea of ecological wounds, he details human impacts on species survival in seven categories, including direct killing, habitat loss and fragmentation, exotic species, and climate change. Foreman describes recent discoveries in conservation biology that call for wildlands networks instead of isolated protected areas, and, reviewing the history of protected areas, shows how wildlands networks are a logical next step for the conservation movement. The final section describes specific approaches for designing such networks (based on the work of the Wildlands Project, an organization Foreman helped to found) and offers concrete and workable reforms for establishing them. The author closes with an inspiring and empowering call to action for scientists and activists alike. Rewilding North America offers both a vision and a strategy for reconnecting, restoring, and rewilding the North American continent, and is an essential guidebook for anyone concerned with the future of life on earth.

Book From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain

Download or read book From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain written by Gordon G. Whitney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-29 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain is an account of the making of a large part of the American landscape following European settlement. Drawing upon land survey records and early travellers' accounts, Dr Whitney reconstructs the 'virgin' forests and grasslands of the north-eastern and central United States during the pre-settlement period. He then documents successively the clearance and fragmentation of the region's woodlands, the harvest of the forest and its game, the ploughing of the prairies, and the draining of wetlands. The degree to which these activities altered the soil, climate, plant and animal communities, and water cycle are evaluated, and the sustainability of present-day ecosystems is brought into question in this account.

Organized by state within the volume, this work informs readers about the wide variety of natural areas across the east and northeast and identifies places that may be near them that demonstrate the importance of preserving such regions.

Book Wilderness Comes Home

Download or read book Wilderness Comes Home written by Christopher McGrory Klyza and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2001 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to look at wilderness in the northeastern US, Wilderness Comes Home features a new approach based on ecological reserve design to protect biological diversity, rewilding and restoring lands to wilderness, and embedding wilderness in a landscape of sustainably managed farmland and forestland. It addresses major theoretical and practical aspects of this important issue -- whether, why, and how to reestablish wilderness areas in the Northeast. Although Western wilderness models already exist for undeveloped areas, Eastern models are still evolving. Protection and social management are being urged not for the "forest primeval" but for recovering areas, in which returning species such as moose and peregrine falcons roam over new growth softwoods and hardwoods, interspersed with the stone walls that once marked field boundaries.

Book Battle for the Wilderness

Download or read book Battle for the Wilderness written by Michael Frome and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Battle for the Wilderness is one of the important works of the American conservation movement. Centered on the struggle to pass the 1964 Wilderness Act, it offers a well-written, workable definition of wilderness and presents conservation as a vital thread in American history. In a completely new preface, Michael Frome ruminates on the relative treatment of the wilderness system under successive administrations, and on recent approaches to the preservation of wild lands. The full text of the Wilderness Act - the document remains at the center of continuing disputes over the definition, designation, and disposition of wilderness - is reproduced in one appendix, while another appendix lists all the wilderness areas now designated in the fifty states."--BOOK JACKET.
