Book Project 3 Wild Trout Evaluations

Download or read book Project 3 Wild Trout Evaluations written by Curtis J. Roth and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-native Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis were introduced throughout western North America in the early 1900s, resulting in widespread self-sustaining non-native populations that are difficult to eradicate and often threaten native salmonid populations. A novel approach to eradicating undesirable Brook Trout populations is using YY male (MYY) Brook Trout. YY male Brook trout are created in the hatchery by feminizing XY males and crossing them with normal XY males. When MYY Brook Trout reproduce successfully with wild females, all offspring are males. This can potentially be used to shift the sex ratio of the wild population toward males, potentially reaching a point where no females remain in the population to reproduce, thus eliminating the population. We stocked fingerling (mean = 126 mm; range = 75–184 mm) MYY Brook Trout in three streams and four lakes in 2020, and catchable (mean = 284 mm; range = 189–340 mm) MYY Brook Trout in two streams and two lakes in 2020 to attempt to eradicate wild Brook Trout in these study systems; these waters have now been stocked for several years, some as early as 2015. Prior to stocking, we suppressed wild Brook Trout via mechanical removal in two streams and two lakes to potentially increase survival of stocked MYY Brook Trout, and therefore decrease the time to eradication. Suppression via mechanical removal in 2020 was 77% in Dry Creek, 46% in Pike’s Fork Creek, 28% in Martin Lake, and 41% in Seafoam Lake #4. This long-term study is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Book Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis Spawning Habitat in a Boreal Stream

Download or read book Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis Spawning Habitat in a Boreal Stream written by Jan Franssen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reproductive success of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations, like those of other salmonid species, is dependent on the availability and quality of spawning/incubation habitats. For brook trout in particular substrate composition and groundwater-hyporheic flow characteristics are key abiotic factors influencing both the suitability of lotic spawning habitats and the survival of embryos nested within these habitats. Egg-to-emergence survival has been shown to be negatively related to substrate fine sediment concentrations and positively related to interstitial flow velocity. Both substrate composition (through filtering effects) and interstitial flow are also thought to influence the susceptibility of egg pockets to fine sediment infiltration. The objectives of this doctoral study are to clarify the roles of groundwater and hyporheic flow in brook trout redd site selection; as well as the effect of substrate composition and interstitial flow on...

Book Behavioural and Genetic Assessment of Mate Choice in Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis

Download or read book Behavioural and Genetic Assessment of Mate Choice in Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis written by Terin Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multifaceted approach is necessary in order to better understand the complex processes involved in mate choice. I investigated the mechanisms of mate choice using a population of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) with known ancestry, using a combination of behavioural observations and microsatellite genetic data to better understand how relatedness influences mate choice in this species. Video observations of female mate choice based on kinship indicated a statistically significant preference of female brook trout for association with males, as demonstrated by the decreased activity level of females in the presence of males. No statistically significant preference for unrelated or related males was evident, however, indicating that while females preferred to be near males, the relatedness of the preferred males varied between individuals. In a second experiment, the roles of relatedness, stocking and local adaptation in mate selection and mating success were investigated by introducing seven brook trout families of known ancestry and relatedness into a semi-wild environment. Reproductive contributions were assessed using two consecutive years of sampling newly hatched fry and determining parentage via microsatellite genotyping. Low levels of reproductive success of the stocked fish, along with little evidence of introgression, suggest that local adaptation is an important (and limiting) component of successful reproduction in this species. These findings are important to future conservation and management of brook trout, as they highlight the importance of maintaining genetic diversity and evolutionary potential both within and between populations.

Book Evaluation of Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis

Download or read book Evaluation of Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis written by Michael Isel (III.) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 100 brook trout were transplanted into each of four Virginia streams in September 2008. Garth Run and Kinsey Run were re-introductions, and Wildcat Hollow and Sweet Run were new introductions. Single pass electrofishing (EF) surveys were conducted with a backpack electrofisher five times during the study. Selected trout> 70 mm but 100 mm and all trout 100 mm received a Biomark® 134.2 kHz passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag to identify individual fish upon recapture. Trout were present in all streams almost three years post introductions. Catches decreased across the first four surveys. Young of year catch rates severely decreased from June 2009 (n = 77) to June 2010 (n = 7). Adult refuge under low flow conditions and environmental factors such as elevated stream temperatures and drought were determined to be potential limiting factors of brook trout success. Future monitoring is needed to further assess the populations.
